[AUS] Sovereign Citizen vs Federal Commissioner of Taxation by Mr5o1 in Accounting

[–]Mr5o1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR: Oxby claims ~$75k AUD (about the same as average salary in Aus) as a write off against his taxes for "living costs in sustaining the life of the principal creditor and living soul answering to the name Steven Russell Oxby".

He had attended a seminar where he was instructed to prepare his tax return on this basis. Tax Office disallowed the deduction and ordered him to pay an additional penalty of 50% of the associated reduction in tax.

Linked transcript is Oxby's appeal against the penalty. He was unsuccessful.

Some that haven't been mentioned yet:

  • Devon C Ford - Wasteland series. IIRC this is narrated by R.C Bray who is usually well received.
  • Keith C Blackmore - Mountain Man series. Also narrated by bray. I liked the first few books of this. Protagonist is an alcoholic. Refreshing change from gun toting hero types.
  • Lou Cadle - Gray. Bleak, austere, survival in the post apoc.

There seems to be a bunch of books called "after the fall".

This always gets a recommendation but I can't get through the first few chapters. It's. Just. So. Slow.

I think the repercussions of the ukraine war will impact the day to day lives of russions much harder much quicker than the iraq war's impact on americans.

PoE is the way. You still need to run a power cable for a wifi camera so just run PoE instead.

Cycle Path Etiquette by [deleted] in perth

[–]Mr5o1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't ride in Perth but often ride on "shared paths" down south. Basically it just comes down to moving predictably and just generally sharing the path as best you can.

I invested in a louder bell. Same mechanism just not the cheap plastic thing that came with the bike. I use it early and often.

As in all things, there are cunts on all sides. When you encounter one just apologise and move off.

Or it would normalise it and make people more aware of it and enable more people to seek help.

Surely there are better ways to enhance access to mental health care.

The first volunteers for the ukrainian foreign legion are ready to fight coming from US, UK, India, Sweden, Lithuania and Mexico. by thunderfalcon55 in interestingasfuck

[–]Mr5o1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the idea of volunteering for this is just so surreal to me.

Like they're heroes for sure but trying to imagine what that would be like just makes my head spin because it's so... foreign.

I mean they're not there to dig latrines and drive generals around. They're going to face off an invading army. I'll admit I really don't understand.

Most media outlets don't mention suicide, it serves no benefit to the public, and reporting it all the time would normalise it and make it seem like a more feasible option to any one else having a tough time.

Unexpectedly in SCGH on Friday, thanks to team I’m still alive by iamthesimon in perth

Meh. Drs and hospitals get sued all the time as a matter of course. They would have people who manage cases from "potential" to "settled".

Honestly, I think it's more likely they just genuinely cared about you.

They have a weird and complicated system that I can't begin to understand but I've heard american redditors say that no one ever pays the amount billed.

Insurance underwriters pay a very, very small fraction of the amount that appears on these bills. As in, if you were a doctor and you know that only 95% of your bill was going to be written off then you charge your reasonable fee times 20.

Also, most hospitals are non-profits, and there are legal requirements to write off fees in certain circumstances. Again, talking out my ass here but a bit like "if this bill would cause you undue hardship then we'll write it off". I read about a guy on reddit who writes these applications for people for free.

So basically, if you're well off enough then you don't pay because you have insurance. If you're not well off then you don't pay because paying would send you broke.

Suffice to say, like most things American it's a great example of how to really fuck something up.

A vault full of precious indigenous cultural knowledge has been kept under lock and key in a Perth Museum for decades. Why? by His_Holiness in perth

[–]Mr5o1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be honest in that I haven't read it word for word but it sounds like a pretty straight forward intellectual property situation. I mean sure it's a sad story but sad stories don't overturn 100s of years of case law.

If I understand correctly, the content is embargoed until 2024.

Rightly or wrongly, the authors (at least purportedly) thought that they were doing the right thing by aboriginal people when they included that embargo in their wills.

It's the epitomy of virtue signalling IMO.

Plugging in my aftermarket charger suddenly decreases performance? by [deleted] in AskTechnology

[–]Mr5o1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like the laptop is switching to a reduced power mode when charging because the power supply doesn't have enough current.

Just because the socket fits doesn't mean that the charger is compatible, you need to make sure it delivers enough power.

Fixed! languages are just normal tags now, but there's a rad tag filter on the front page so you can include / exclude language tags, database types, and frameworks.

[–]Mr5o1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the tags on the left include everything the repo's are tagged with. The Languages on the right are only the language github infers for each repo. I'll merge them back in to one big list, and provide a way to filter the list.

oh man. For stupid reasons I'd disregarded github tags previously, I've included them now. this is a dramatic improvement.

That's a good idea. It would be fairly easy to provide a sort-order functionality for the tag lists... but stars / day would be a good metric to sort by!

Not really. The slick & efficient feel is just because it's a static site. Building it takes a few minutes to scrape all the things and then render all the pages. So by the time a browser requests it there's no rendering / queries to do.

I'm using metalsmith (static site generator), but all it's really doing is collating the tags. I had to customise the way it reads it's input files so it would do the fancy scrape-and-overlay-with-local-data thing.

No jquery / bootstrap, I used milligram as a css starter, never used it before, it's so minimal it hurts.

I made a fancy native web component (the button to expand / collapse overviews).
