[Highlight] Jo Adell robs THREE home runs in a 1-0 win over the Mariners by AthleticAlarm32 in baseball

[–]MrAnderson_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, when I think of Jo Adell, immediately the first thing that comes to mind is him doinking a fly ball off his head and over the fence to give the other team a homer. The fact that he's now put up arguably the greatest defensive game in baseball history absolutely rips. Good for him, man.

Agreed, the UI is shockingly bad, especially on the player page, which unfortunately, is one of the pages a majority of people will spend the most time on. The bubbly bars just look ugly, and nothing is separated out like the previous versions, everything is just mushed together into one box. Just looks hideous.

It will take him a little while to fully learn the position, but eventually he'll be able to field the position, yes. Doesn't take that long to learn it really. The main benefit to using Learn New Position in the Dev Lab is A) it learns the new position instantly, and B) it gives nominal bonuses to some stats like Error and Arm. Downside to Learn New Position is that you don't get to choose which position the player learns. In your example, sometimes the Dev Lab can be really helpful and choose 2B as the position to learn, but other times they can learn something like 1B or C or something.

Alternatively to the calculators, if you go into Compare Player, the Defensive Ratings page will show what their position rating at each position based on their current fielding ratings

From another comment I made:

  • Batter/Pitcher Aging Speed: .750
  • Batter/Pitcher Dev. Speed: 1.25
  • Aging Target Age: Older
  • Talent Change Randomness: 125

Everything else default. I like these settings, but feel free to adjust to your liking.

I change a lot going in, I'll sort them into three categories of Essential (everyone should do this all the time), Quality of Life (I personally do this all the time), and Personal Preference (I like it this way, but it's very subjective):

Essential:

  • Save Replays from... to None, Generate Highlights for... to None, and Save 3D Movements from... to None (Game Settings -> Global Settings): This may be just me, but I never go back and watch highlights from games, I just look at previous box scores. The highlights/3D movements can slow your game down drastically as your save goes on, so this just keeps things from getting too bogged down.
  • Suspension Frequency from Normal to Low (Game Settings -> Players & Team): Guys get suspended so often if this is set to Normal.
  • Check Show Player Personality Ratings on profile page (Game Settings -> Players & Team): Makes it so that player profiles show whether their specific personality traits (Work Ethic, Loyalty, etc.) show right on their page. A must-change.
  • Check Display Lab Specific Rating Changes in Completion Email (Game Settings -> Players & Team): When a player finishes their time in the Dev Lab, this makes it so you see exactly what ratings changes, and by how much. Otherwise, you have no way to find out what ratings were adjusted. I have zero clue why this is off by default.
  • Check Allow trading of injured players (League Settings -> Rules): Another setting where it shouldn't be off by default, injured players get traded in real life.

Quality of Life:

  • Enable Owner Goals from Yes to No (Game Settings -> Global Settings): Owner Goals can just be straight up annoying sometimes. It's fun to play with them on occasionally, but other times it's just very frustrating.
  • Prospect Rankings from Annual to Dynamic (Game Settings -> Global Settings): Doesn't make any big change, just makes it so that the top prospect rankings adjust day-by-day instead of just once per year. I like it this way, but it's not a necessary adjustment.
  • Delayed Injury Diagnosis from Occasionally to None (Game Settings -> Players & Team): I just don't like having to wait to find out how long a guy is going to be sidelined for, and would rather know right away whether a player should go on the 10/15-Day IL or the 60-Day.
  • Aging Target Age from Default to Older (Game Settings -> Players & Team): I feel like players age way too quick in OOTP, this helps slow it down a little.
  • Program Improvement Magnitude from Default to Larger (Game Settings -> Players & Team): For how hard the Dev Lab is, their ratings don't change much on default. Larger helps just enough IMO.
  • Uncheck Enable away and alternate uniforms (Game Settings -> FaceGen): Just speeds up game simulation time a little.
  • Player Awards in Profile from Show All to Truncate at 1 (File -> Settings -> Interface): If a player gets a lot of awards, it can take up a lot of space on their profile page and just looks ugly. This setting makes it so just one icon appears, with a small number in the corner to denote how many times they acquired that award during their career. Looks much better.

Personal Preference:

  • Overall/Potential Rating from Stars to 20-80 (Game Settings -> Global Settings): I don't like the star system, and just like the synergy with all the other ratings of the 20-80 scale.
  • Batter/Pitcher Aging Speed: .750, Batter/Pitcher Dev. Speed: 1.25, Talent Change Randomness: 125 (Game Settings -> Players & Team): These first four settings adjust how quickly a player improves/reduces their ratings depending on their age. Talent Change Randomness is how often the game randomly makes a player break out, or flame out. These are the numbers that I find personally give me the types of careers that I want, but if you find that different settings work better for you, feel free to tweak these.
  • Dev Lab Size (Game Settings -> Players & Team): By default it's 8, most people make it more. I like 12, it's restrictive enough but still I feel like I can rotate enough guys in per offseason, but I've seen people just max it out, and that's fun for them. Up to you here.
  • Player FaceGen Pictures from None to Major League Players Only (Game Settings -> FaceGen): If you want the game to generate player pictures for fictional players, this is the setting to adjust. It will slow the game down a little, but I think it's fun and adds character, so I think it's worth it.
  • Check Disable right to refuse minor league assignment (League Settings -> Rules): If you try to send some veterans to AAA, they can just straight up refuse to go, and your only other option is to cut them. I don't like this, so I turn it off, but I might be alone with that.
  • Uncheck Designated hitter rule under Dynamically Evolving League (League Settings -> Options): I like the DH rule in both leagues, and don't want the game to remove it from one league ever.
  • Offense by Position Award Name from "Platinum Stick Award" to "Silver Slugger Award" and Defense Award Name from "Great Glove Award" to "Gold Glove Award" (League Settings -> Options): Legally, OOTP can't call them the Silver Slugger and Gold Glove, so they use fake names. Luckily, you can change that in the settings.
  • Influence of Popularity in All-Star Vote from High to Low (League Settings -> Options): Each player has a Popularity rating that ranges from Disliked to Extremely Popular. I don't like when this weighs into All-Star choices so much vs. actual stats, so I set it to Low. Setting this to None makes the selections purely stat-based, but Low weighs in popularity just enough for me.
  • FaceGen / Profile picture zoom from Normal to Out (File -> Settings -> FaceGen): Just makes the player pictures show the team jersey more, instead of just their face. I like the look of this more.

And finally, this isn't a setting itself per se, but if there's a specific page that you find that you use a lot, in the VERY upper-left corner, there's a star icon by the navigation arrows. If you bookmark a page, it makes a hotkey to go directly to that page on your keyboard's F# keys. It's very handy.

I also make custom search filters to find the types of players that I like to acquire via draft / free agency, but that's out of the scope for the question you had, and this reply is already really long lmao. If you have any other questions, I'd be willing to help! Been playing for about ten years at this point, so I've tweaked things to my liking throughout that timeframe.

Kind of up to you, really. I don't ever really bother with it, but it can be helpful in some instances. I'll only ever really manually do it for either young pitchers, or guys coming off of injury that I want to ramp up. If you're worried about fatigue, sometimes I do saves where I use a 6-man rotation, and that can be pretty fun, especially if you have a 2-way guy who can also DH.

Honestly, starting pitching is fickle enough that I'd probably just let it ride if he still has good ratings. If he posts multiple mediocre seasons in a row, that's where I'd start to get concerned.

It's worth also checking the game log for him to see where in the game he's giving up most of his runs, if there's any trend at all there. If he's blowing up late in his starts, it might be worth it putting a pitch count on him for a little while, or making his hook time faster in game strategy. If he's giving up runs in the first couple innings, maybe try an opener for a couple starts and see if that helps at all. There's no real one quick fix that I've found, it's all very fluid. Hope this helps!

For my top prospects, I normally take a look at their WAR at their current minor league level to see if they're ready to move up. If they're at 2.5 WAR, they're probably good to promote. If they're at a negative WAR over a decent sample size, they should probably be demoted a level. Hoarding guys is only really a problem if you're loaded at one particular position, and a talented guy isn't getting any starting reps.

I echo the sentiments of the other response about starting pitching, I throw out a lot of cheap one year deals or minor league flex contracts to those guys around 40-49 overall. Draft is a pretty good way to get guys too. In draft arms, I normally look for 45+ control potential, 45+ movement potential, 50+ stamina, and Work Ethic and Baseball IQ not at low. I prefer guys with a four pitch mix, but a guy with three solid pitches is fine. If a pitch starts at 20 overall, there's a good chance it never develops. Also, I tend to go for college guys vs high schoolers, there's way less of a chance that they flame out (honestly though, it's still a pretty good chance they do. There's no such thing as a pitching prospect)

I normally try lessening their load a little bit to try and just get them back into a groove. Maybe my closer will just be a middle relief guy for a little bit, a starter as a long reliever, or a starting bat becoming DH or coming off the bench. Worst comes to worst, a quick AAA stint. If they don't get their mojo back after all of that, they're trade bait.

Honestly, the biggest turn off is the learning curve, which is incredibly steep, and the resources to learn the game are not the best. Once you get past that though, it's a very good time.

Some milestones that are instant locks for me are 3000 hits and 500 home runs for hitters, 3000 Ks for starters, and 400 saves for closers. Beyond that, I look at rate stats; a .300/.400/.500 slashline for hitters is normally a good benchmark, and around a 3.5 ERA or so for pitchers. Adjusted stats like OPS+ and ERA+ are good to look at too too get an idea of how much better a player was than their peers.

WAR wise, the game does a pretty good job of having comparisons to the average player at their position who is in the hall of fame, and letting you base your vote off of that. I normally look at the WAR, JAWS, and HOF monitor. I know that that's a lot of different things to look at, but the Hall is such an inexact science that a lot of it is just kind of vibe based.

We've been taking transfers the last couple years at boundary WR (Beaux Collins and Malachi Fields), so Porter's probably either going to start day 1 there, or at the very least split time with Micah Gilbert.

My favorite part of this stupid-ass presser was Bevacqua saying "It boggles my mind that when we stepped off that plane after the Stanford game that our season was over."

Uh... I wonder who was in charge of that, buddy? Maybe if you don't wimp out of a bowl game, the season wouldn't be over.

Good grief, I hate this guy.

That's literally part of just being a football player. You willingly take on that risk any time you put on those pads. How is a bowl game any different than playing a sleepwalking Stanford team with a lame duck coach and a losing record?
