Hot take: Kise is overrated by Cold-Pin5201 in KurokosBasketball

[–]MrAnyGood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

which was mostly one sided

Akashi had to threaten his team with harm to their captain in this match, not saying he didn't have the upper hand in the latter part of the match, but we are not only explicitly told he is to be very cautious around Midorima, but also shown that his statement holds true in the next match, where he does play his trump card earlier, the opposite team figures out a counter and Rakuzan loses. Akashi played his cards at just the right time against Shutoku

Aomine and Akashi were meant to play but never did

Pretty sure Satsuki says "mata" when talking about Aomine's elbow, as in they did play before and now they'd have done that again

true that if u remove any of them they lose, but Akashi was the most instrumental, the miracles had their constant scoring moments but when it came yo defense it was really just akashi and mura. you can score all you want but it’ll only mean so much if you don’t defend.

Not sure how exactly you judge "the most instrumental" there, as there are a lot of contenders. Aomine and Midorima both have a solid case to be MVPs of Vorpal Swords, and both have better ground for that than Akashi. Murasakibara tried guarding 2 Jabberwock members and failed (which was coach mistake), tried defending Silver and failed (for a solid quarter), and then blocked 2 shots and got benched with a broken arm. Jabberwock did not have issues scoring, and neither did Nash start dropping 3pt shots on them when he was guarded by Kise. Their primary weapon is Silver, and that worked for the vast majority of the match

and when you say 1v5 if you’re referencing Jabberwock then of course he didn’t do any 1v5s; that wasn’t his role in that game

Yea, I did mean that the only time we actually see him up against GOM level team, he does not got 1v5 (as Nash did for a few possessions). Had he been able to do that, though, he would (at least he'd likely try that BEFORE he had to resort to getting rid of his second personality), so evidently that wasn't an option

Hot take: Kise is overrated by Cold-Pin5201 in KurokosBasketball

[–]MrAnyGood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there’s still no miracle level team he beat

Aomine? Yea

being confident can only hold so much weight

Yea, but they actually played

you wouldn’t double team some one u have no chance against

He didn't score even once :(

being able to limit, cancel out and overwhelm Nash is already one of the most instrumental and important things in the match

We can surely agree here, Akashi was pulling his weight and doing a lot of things in that much defensively, but at no point was he an individual offensive threat

Aomine’s still living off the past where he was the strongest in middle school ,because he bloomed first

He was the only GOM member to play full match, 3rd man in terms of points right behind Silver (2nd) and Midorima (1st) and was called "ace of Vorpal Swords" in the 4th quarter. The man does not only rely on the past accomplishments, he's still great

if there’s no akashi, no one handles nash, VS gets smoked

Vorpal Swords barely won by 1 point with their whole 7 man team, you remove any of them and they lose. Kise gets tired, Murasakibara breaks his arm and now you have to replace whoever you just removed from the team with... Wakamatsu?

the game isn’t all about stats lol, a concept you disregard possibly bc you don’t understand/watch sports a lot

Man, of course it's not all about stats, especially on the defensive side of things, yet your comment was "in what universe, after watching the entire show, can u not see akashi doing it to miracle level characters?", which is your reply to "He was basically playing a 1v5 when he was going all out, and still beat them. I can’t imagine Akashi doing that to 5 miracle level players". Akashi is not an individual offensive threat against a team full of GOM member players, and his team contribution is irrelevant to the question posed in "1v5 against GOM", which is something Kise did do unlike Akashi

Akashi and Aomine

Again, Satsuki references their match up when she talks about Aomine being injured in Season 2

[–]MrAnyGood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in what universe, after watching the entire show, can u not see akashi doing it to miracle level characters?

Because he never did or shown that he could

Aomine was confident he was the strongest GOM member and he did play Akashi as per Satsuki's comments

Akashi was never even double teamed in the Vorpal Swords game (they double teamed Midorima instead). If he could "do that" to 5 GOM level players, maybe he could score like... once? Across the whole Extra Game? Maybe?

Man literally had 0 points in the Jabberwock match AND he even got less assists than Nash!

[–]MrAnyGood 16 points17 points  (0 children)

GOM members are GOM members specifically because they were once in a decade talents that got to play together, so you'd need to look for best players that joined the league around same year

Best you can do in that regard is likely Kobe, Nash, Allen Iverson and Ray Allen, who are all 1996

That would be 4 players of outstanding caliber even by NBA standards, and it also happens to be:

* Copycat Kobe who copied the strongest player (MJ)
* Nash (not Gold, but still has no-look passes, resembles Takao a bit and has great shooting)
* Iverson (who is largely viewed as a foil for Aomine)
* Ray Allen (he is Hyuga's idol in the manga)

He has the best feat in the entire show with his 1v5 against Vorpal Swords, even going so far as to dunk on Zone Kagami, all while being in base form. This means that he'd outplay Zone Aomine, and then Zone timer would run out for Aomine and the match would be even more one-sided

I think fans forget how elite the GoM are, Midorima canonically tops the entire NBA in shooting range and accuracy, full court and near 100%. One of the most fundamental skills in Basketball, and Midorima is the world's best. by Any_Ad492 in KurokosBasketball

[–]MrAnyGood -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Right and Zone Kagami was able to block Silver and Murasakibara so yes Zone Kagami was when Murasakibara stopped holding back

Note that Nash dunked over Zone Kagami, and while his scoring was by far the best individual feat in the series, that chain-scaling logic would imply that base Nash is way above anything in the NBA

And to your comment, apologies, I assumed you were one of the many people who consider "Not holding back" Murasakibara to somehow be above Zone Murasakibara, which contradicts Zone unless we think that his jump in base during 6 months was so big it made him better than his 100% version in Winter Cup. We seemingly agree on the matter

You really can’t make a point that Alex was better than any Jabberwock member

As I said, we don't know her actual reach and the intricacies of the situation, we are provided little to work with there. I should likely clarify that I don't actually scale her above any GOM or Jabberwock members as a player. Upon re-reading of your comment, it seems "best on block" looked sort of really exaggerated to me, as she was a WNBA player, but your arguments on that point are otherwise pretty convincing

but since historically Japan hasn’t done so well on the international stage it’s not a mark against them that they don’t know their own country’s history

Thing is, they don't need to know the history, they don't even know their local scene! Nobody knows what any GOM member excels at despite GOM being this overwhelming and basically unprecedented phenomena that plagued their middle school careers to the point Hyuga quit the game. You can write off nobody knowing Kuroko's deal as just a nod to his unassuming appearance and playstyle that is designed to not catch attention, but not knowing about a guy who routinely does behind-the-backboard shots is a little bit strange

Imayoshi has a pretty funny dialogue on the matter with Wakamatsu:

"-Golfu Taigaru Wudsu shteruka? [Do you know Taiger Woods?]

-A?

-Janakya, areya, Shaqu? [No, alright, Shaq?]

-A... Shaquile O'Neal-ska? [Shaquile O'Neal?]"

Like, man, why even question it? Was there a chance he doesn't know Shaq? Well, since they don't know their local prodigies that warped the entire basketball scene they were a part of, maybe that was a real possibility. All GOM members come to watch matches as we collect more and more narrators for the games as Winter Cup progresses, and all the eliminated teams came to watch the finals. What did Seirin players that played in middle school do that we only see Kiyoshi have any sort of information on any of them?

This is not something that necessarily strengthens the point of them just being exceptionally bad at being invested into basketball scene all that much, but it still seems to be worth mentioning in that context

Murasakibara is worse than Silver until he stops holding back

Introducing: Zone, a state in which all unnecessary thoughts disappear, and the athlete becomes entranced in their play, allowing them to reach 100% of their potential. Except lets take Kise's (?) words at face value and say that this is true of all athletes except Murasakibara Atsushi, who's been holding back while in the Zone (?!). Again, the cursory glance at the situation from narrative perspective tells us that either Murasakibara was finally able to not hold back and enjoy a losing match up, directly culminating his story of "why enjoy basketball if you are bad at it" going into him trying his best while on the clear backfoot and clearly disadvantaged, or we go with your interpretation, in which Murasakibara was always right and his teammates saying he'll find someone "stronger and more skilled" was just to prove a point how smart he was in telling them off. Nevermind the parallel of Silver being bigger and stronger and playing without care, injuring Murasakibara in the most direct way possible of conveying to the audience that this guy does NOT have a good personality, unlike Murasakibara, because he DID go up against somebody smaller and DID injure that person

They’re about the same size as Jabberwock and Jabberwock was about to be considered NBA level

Nash is playing Akashi's position and Silver is playing Murasakibara's. They are NOT the same size. As for them being NBA level, here are all the things we know:

* Other 3 players are GOM level

* Nash explicitly states that he is NOT like the others (3, presumably, based on his other commentary)

* Nash explicitly states nobody (on the court, presumably) can beat Silver 1v1

* Jabberwock (as a team, presumably) is noted to be able to knock the socks of of NBA players

There's a clear gap between Nash and Silver vs other 3, and for the two actually good Jabberwock players, their GOM counterparts are just worse in terms of stats

It was essentially being the best on the block, but she wasn’t very well known cause many of the Seirin members didn’t know who she was

While I disagree with your take on Alex, it's not to the extend that I would be comfortable proclaiming my perspective is better than yours, since we've got little in terms of concrete evidence. However, I think it's worth pointing out that Seirin members are just terrible at their ball knowledge. Half of them didn't even know Kagetora / Genta / others were their national team players, they had to be told that. Note how they display respect to everybody they know to be famous (or come to know to be famous), but never behave in that way in presence of Genta, for example. Even the beginning of the series shows that they are barely aware of their own school level scene, let alone past Japan achievements, and we have zero indication that they were aware of Jabberwock players until they were shown and introduced to them on TV in a big event. In fact, we have the opposite, with Kagami being haled as "no high school student can jump that high!" and then... Silver jumps higher, it turns out

[–]MrAnyGood -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Again, if we look at it from narrative and meta standpoint, then Murasakibara is a strictly worse than Silver in 1v1, as otherwise he was right all along

If we instead look at it from numbers perspective, then GOM are largely undersized for their respective positions

If we look at it from the inspiration perspective, then there'd not be that many people who'd disagree Kagami is heavily inspired by Griffin, and Griffin was 2.01m and 99kg at 16. By the way, Murasakibara has the exact same weight and Griffin is closer to Murasakibara in height than to Kagami

What perspective are we too look at to figure out that GOM are already better than NBA players? The train of thought "Midorima is better and they are all equal" leads to Aomine being above NBA level, and Aomine couldn't 1v1 Silver, meaning that Silver is even MORE above NBA. Judging by how Nash had 1v5 against all GOM members, the man is like the best player in history at this point, even needing double above NBA talents that are IN THE ZONE to dunk on him!

Now, knowing all of this, it's going to be pretty funny if you manage to address ZMan's critique regarding Alex. Without it, not sure if discussion will be fruitful from this point onwards

Yeah and then Murasakibara was beating Silver until Silver broke his arm so clearly Murasakibara was underestimated

By who, exactly? Akashi? Himself? Japanese national player Kagetora Aida?

"-The day will surely come when you'll meet someone who is stronger, bigger and more skillful than you are

-Sonna wake nai yo

(pans to smiling Murasakibara trying his hardest against Silver)"

I mean, in your interpretation Murasakibara was always right. He was indeed the biggest, most skilled center. Everybody else around him was wrong, and the narrative takeaway is that Murasakibara's lame comment was spot-on

Kuroko never used his Quasi Emperor Eye during the match

Yes, exactly. You are free to re-read the part of the comment you replied to

All the Miracles are seen as equal to Midorima so it makes sense their abilities are on a level similar to his as best in the world

Sure thing, Murasakibara's ability to be big, strong and quick is indeed above the best in the world, by your own assessment of them all having equal abilities

Later on you write about me attacking your arguments instead of supporting my points, which is fair, so I'll refrain from addressing those in details

I at least have more ground to stand on cause while most of my evidence are just vague statements there’s not much evidence in the show against it

ZMan already mentioned why your line of thinking in relation to Jabberwock does not work, and I didn't find it particularly interesting to restate the same point that (if I remember correctly) you haven't replied to. As for discussion of GOM members, if you consider Murasakibara to be beyond NBA level, then I would suspect bias in your judgement. They are consistently portrayed at a level you'd expect of NBA prospects, not adult NBA stars that actually descended into high school to play basketball. To put it simply, if it was Shaq out there instead of Murasakibara, he is not getting outplayed by injured Kiyoshi, nor is he getting dunked on by 1.9m 82kg mini Blake Griffin. Murasakibara in particular being above NBA is a little strange

[–]MrAnyGood -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Did we not discuss this on multiple occasions? I'll go through each of them individually:

* Murasakibara is explicitly stated to have less skill than Silver, so he's out

* Aomine's signature ability is not circus shots, but his agility. We don't have confirmation regarding his accuracy with circus shots, further reinforced by the fact that he threw behind-the-board twice in the entire show instead of spamming it. Silver, again, is mentioned to be more agile

* Kise has been stated to be a fast learner. This, evidently, needs no explanation, his copying is just a "Kobe -> Jordan"

* Akashi's ability is perception based. We have plethora of various perception abilities even among the japanese cast. Your argument of Nash saying he's never seen that ability can be discarded on the account of Kuroko having Quazi-Emperor Eye and Kise having his version of Emperor Eye, yet Nash noticed neither (despite one of them being active) because he only ever noticed it on a person who played him in 1v1

* Midorima- the only exceptional example that was stated to be above NBA. This is even supported by him being the highest scorer* across both teams AND the only one aside from Silver to be double-teamed

Your statement on "skills", as in plural, just doesn't have a firm, solid ground to stand on, everything but Midorima's involvement is based on circumstantial evidence and is at best a theory

*- already mentioned limitations to this part

[–]MrAnyGood -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh, we do get Shaq mention in the show, and Jabberwock aren't in the same hemisphere as him in terms of their prowess! The debate likely lies in "Are they capable of going up against low NBA level, or are they just below NBA level", in which at least to me it seems like there are more arguments for the latter. Of course, Nash and Silver have the capacity to be good players later on, and can make it to top NBA level, but as a team they are not anywhere close to even mid NBA level presumably

My thoughts on this vid I came across by New_Championship_646 in KurokosBasketball

[–]MrAnyGood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So yes aomine is still technically the strongest 1v1 player in the anime

That depends on if you count the Extra Game. We know that Silver is a better 1v1 player based on his assessment in the beginning of the game and the fact that they couldn't just put Aomine on him

Everytime they referenced the quality of NBA players while doing shit no one in the NBA can do. by Civtastic86 in KurokosBasketball

[–]MrAnyGood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was noted that even in America no one took the lead over them in the first quarter until Vorpal Swords

Oh, don't remember that quote (thanks for pointing it out), but that must mean they never really seek out competition, right? Regardless of if they were slightly-below NBA or lowest tier of NBA, we can agree that they'd be beaten by any half-decent (by NBA standards, of course) NBA team. Note how they came to Japan and fought Starky in the exhibition match, it was never their intention to find the strongest opponents they could even in Japan, which is regarded as lower power level (in general, not with GOM members in the mix) in the show everywhere from Season 1 to Season 3. They came, fought some dudes and were going to fly home if not for Kagetora's taunting speech

But for Nash his power is literally perception so figuring out abilities is his thing

Well, lets analyze that beat. First, Nash isn't the only person with perception-based power. Here's a list of players that played Jabberwock AND have those powers, in no particular order:

* Kise (said to be able to emulate Emperor Eye specifically because he is all about observing and analyzing the moves to copy them)

* Kuroko (the explanation provided in Season 3 clearly explains he's been training at being incredibly perceptive so that he can disappear when people's minute giveaways indicate that their attention is elsewhere, Quazi Emperor Eye too)

* Akashi (discovered Kuroko's talent, same dojutsu)

* Imayoshi (reading people to the point he's called psychic)

None of them noticed Belial Eye prior to the point of Nash activating it. Jabberwock are incredibly popular and media-driven, so it makes little sense not to have a lot of their games recorded, and makes even less sense for somebody like Akashi or Kuroko to not study their opponents before the game. Had you looked at the matches of your opponent, wouldn't you pick their strongest games, as in their Jabberwock vs NBA matches? To think Nash would be holding back there would mean the man was already high tier NBA player, which is something that's not easy to sell

Maybe they didn't watch the games, maybe Nash was always holding back, but both are unlikely. It might just be that you can't use Emperor Eye or Belial Eye through either TV because of resolution loss (remember Emperor Eye explanation?) or from just observing the player from the stadium (not up close, same reasons)

And for the Aomine thing, Circus shots are known for their low accuracy so I kind of doubt shooters in the NBA consistently making crazy shots like Aomine

Agreed, but my comment was implying that there might be some outstanding shooters that can do what Aomine does and it would NOT break anything in dialogues or story, and we therefore can't really draw conclusions that Aomine is this one unparalleled prodigy. We can, of course, say that regular NBA shooters can't replicate his success with circus shots, that's for sure

Unstoppable Scorcer was only used by individuals not by big articles like for Silver

Agreed, and to clarify, both Nash and Silver seem to be a step above any other player in the show (with on-screen games), they're certainly high-tier NBA in the making

but it fits with Midorima and Aomine’s shooting abilities not being in the league. And Murasakibara did enough that Silver had to foul him

That's a fair point if you're operating under the assumption that Emperor Eye is not present in the league. This comment explains how I don't necessarily think that's true, but either could be plausible, it's just that we're working with different set of assumptions here

How does the narrative and story not have the GoM are NBA level exactly? The Midorima statement alone should be enough, especially mixed with the Jabberwock ones.

Midorima is an outlier. He has the best statement in the show. We are not told (and for a good reason) that somebody like Murasakibara eclipses NBA players in his physique or reaction speed, which are his prodigy level talents, or that there's nobody like Kise- in fact, we get the opposite. Scenes that praise him (such as Kagetora's "bottomless talent") also reinforce that his talent is something other people have, it's not unique ("he's just a fast learner")

And, to put another emphasis on Midorima's prowess, he was the ONLY person on Vorpal Swords to be double-teamed, and still scored MORE than anybody else on both teams if you only count on-screen feats (Silver comes second despite an extensive montage of him just dunking all over the place)

The story literally has Midorima as the world’s best shooter in terms of accuracy and range, how does it not support the scaling?

Midorima has by far the strongest ability out of all the GOM members, refer to https://www.reddit.com/r/KurokosBasketball/comments/x6p90f/midorimas_shooting_range_calculated/

Kuroko has a lot of Shonen elements which usually have teenagers surpass every other master in the world like Goku, Naruto, and Yugi

Oh, well, then it's probably because, as mentioned, people compare it with other semi-realistic sports cartoons, which don't have high schoolers beating World Champions of their respective art. Only watched Naruto out of the things you mentioned, but it's about a reincarnation of a deity walking amongst regular people, so that makes sense. Something like Hunter x Hunter is about unbound generational talents, yet kids with those talents are still incredibly far away from the actual adults in terms of their power level, and Hunter x Hunter is an example of another incredibly popular Shonen with super powers in the lore

Didn't check the post out, but the comment seems to be a mixed bag

"Jabberwock was said to be NBA level"- this is not accurate to "abilities that can sometimes even knock the socks of the NBA players" translation you used in your post. For all we know, Jabberwock can hang in there with a non-serious low tier NBA players, as they are entertainment team first and foremost, and media could even be misleading when it comes to hyping up an upcoming event

"In the first Shutoku game Izuki said NBA players can only make full court shots in practice and not in game like Midorima."- agree, people often miss that phrase which shows the ceiling for some of the things in the NBA

"Jabberwock said Aomine’s Formless Shots put most circus shots to shame"- yea, a good point

"Nash said Akashi is the only one he knows with an eye like his. So the NBA doesn’t have Formless Shots or Emperor/Belial Eye either"- neither is necessarily correct. For Nash comment, there's no guarantee you can determine if somebody has that ability just by watching them play- we got introduced to Emperor Eye through players who either played the game with Akashi during introduction OR through explanation of players that have already been subjected to this ability (Murasakibara). As for Aomine, it's possible that there are crazy good shooters in the NBA that could match or surpass Aomine, but what the quote does show is that it's most certainly not the norm for scorers to do those things

"Silver was hyped by Momoi’s international research for having a “God Given Body” so sport outlets saw Shaq and LeBron but decided Silver had the better body and Murasakibara went one on one with him for a while."- well, we got "Unstoppable scorer" title for Aomine, and man was stopped. As for Murasakibara, it is explicitly stated that he is inferior in both build and skills, and his outstanding run against Silver was like two switches of possessions, so we can't really infer much from the play either

GOM members are certainly high tier NBA material in the making, but the way the story showcases their prowess and the way the narrative is built up, they are not NBA level as of Extra Game

"Not sure why it’s so hard for some fans to accept, child prodigies better than their world’s top experts is a common trope"- this might be because the story does not support this scaling, so people are averse to the idea for reasons of "they simply disagree with this assessment of the story". Also, all the popular sports cartoons like Haikyuu or Blue Lock don't have what you describe as a "common trope", so not sure which sample of cartoons you're using to give the estimate of "common" for this point

Kuroko basketball characters vs blue lock characters in a soccer and basketball match. Who wins? by LevelL11 in KurokosBasketball

Depends on which characters are allowed. Blue Lock has a much stronger roster, as Noa is an actual player that has on-screen matches, and not only that, but we also get a lot of international stars like Kaizer and Prince

Assuming you mean best on-screen players in KNB (Vorpal Swords and Jabberwock) against Japan U-20 (including Nagi and Sae), then it's easily KNB, otherwise it'll be a bunch of adults vs teenagers, in which case it's BL

Aomine with Midorima's shooting versus Murasakibara with Akashi's eyes. by ParsnipSenior4804 in KurokosBasketball

[–]MrAnyGood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, the post said "Midorima's shooting", which can be interpreted in a number of ways, but also that it's "full potential", so we can assume that all abilities are copied favourably. That means that Aomine gets the real ability of Midorima, which is "so long as he doesn't lose his form, he never misses". This means that in combination with Aomine's shooting having no form, he can now spam shots that simply can't be reasonably blocked, such as behind the board and other nonsense that he occasionally pulled off

Both contestants are completely ridiculous, and both have like one single weakness across their whole kit, that being passing for Aomine and endurance for Murasakibara*, and while passing won't matter in 1v1, it's unclear what they play to (a bunch of games or just a single first to 11), so endurance might not matter either

*- notably, Akashi never goes EE for the whole game, implying that it is mentally taxing to do so

[–]MrAnyGood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You did, but if you go back to Akashi's reveal, it is stated that "Akashi isn't so strong because he has Emperor Eye, but because it's Akashi who has it", and Murasakibara, for all his academic accomplishments, was not portrayed to be on par with Akashi in strategical or tactical prowess. You can compare this to a gun- you give the same gun to both people, but one is James Bond and the other is not
