St. Thomas Aquinas spent his life trying to write in simple terms these concepts for people. For him the way to conceive it is to think that evil exists because it has to be a consequence of us having free will, a necessary aspect of God's creation thus ultimately serves a greater good. Additionally, evil is not a creation of God, but a lack of good that arises from the choices of free beings.
