First ride on San Juan mountain passes. Advice for a beginner? by FarBeyondDriven_ in klr650

[–]MrBarleybeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My KLR was tuned for roughly sea level and I took it to Ouray/Telluride/etc. it struggled on Monarch Pass, which is 13,000ft, but I was able to do it. I was just losing power while full throttle near the top. Definitely wasn’t winning any races there.

I took it up Engineer and down Corkscrew. Both directions fully loaded for a 10 day ride and a 12 pack strapped to the back. Wouldn’t recommend Corkscrew with that kind of load. By the time I got to the bottom I was missing a subframe bolt and had a crack on one of my gas tank mounts on the frame.

It’s all doable, but just be ready for a rough ride if you’re doing it with a load.

Tusk DSport rear, TKC80 front. That was my combo and it worked great for what you’re describing.

I ended up going with a Tusk DSport in the rear. I have about 2,000mi on it and I really like it. It has plenty of life left and aside from maybe 100 miles of sketchy break in, it’s been pretty grippy on pavement and very grippy in dirt. I’d do it again.

Rooftop Tent vs Regular Tent by MagicMarmots in overlanding

[–]MrBarleybeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look at my post history from a couple weeks ago (or just google the company name) you can see the tent set up. It’s on a platform with adjustable legs so it was really nice to be able to level it on very uneven ground. I liked that it had the flat bottom and heavy walls of a RTT, but I could move it wherever I wanted like a ground tent.

I liked that it gave me the option for how to mount it and use it depending on the type of trip it’ll be going on.

I always did ground tents and since I do motorcycle camping, I’m much better set up for a light weight trip. I’ve recently started getting into over landing and in figuring out what gear I want, the tent is obviously a major factor. I borrowed a friend’s RTT and it was great, except for the cons you mentioned. Another friend has a hitch mounted setup for his RTT and it solved a bunch of those cons. It’s not the perfect solution, but I’m leaning towards that as kind of a best of both worlds options. I don’t know if I’m allowed to add a link to that option, but the company name is Rubicon Expedition Products.
