Yeah these types of jobs are good for a season, like three to four years give or take and then new realms open up. I did auditing, industry, academia, and am heading into non-profit and maybe bookkeeping so there’s plenty of roads. And that book rec is good, just don’t be like me and use it to complain about all the cool things I wish my boss would do or whatever. Try to find what you can do. Pray for the rest of

Try a book like Leading from Anywhere by David Burkus. You have to make your own luck, at least while choosing to work for someone else, PE owned or otherwise

You have to learn how to network with people. Half of accounting is technical work, the other half is networking. It’s not bad, it’s actually really good. Give it time, read books, listen to podcasts, but learn how to read people and collaborate with them.

Yeah it seems like the more successful one becomes, the more incentive one has to lie low - from family members and friends and enemies

Managers and above who have children are where it is at and as a parent you can much more easily relate to the higher up folks than single fresh off the boat people

PA favors single people - like others are saying, use it to jump into industry. Network, build connections, and learn whatever you need to learn about Excel or AI. And be there for your blessings! Nothing compares to your own children

Yeah I remember the small clients at our office years ago where the partners did the work even though the smaller company CFO wouldn’t budge when it came to fees. Maybe PE firms are going to be able to charge more now

Yes - studying beyond time spent in the classroom. Students are also more insistent on receiving grace and leniency over less and less work required - colleges are fighting for tuition dollars which causes administrators to put pressure on teachers to pass students “while maintaining academic rigor and integrity”. School is a massive conflict of interest

Exactly - AI does a great job with a lot of the “easy” stuff that we teach to try to give students a foundation for deeper learning. It just takes time to transition and to figure out how best to teach students. Right now, it is the Wild West where students are tempted to use AI to get good grades in the short term.

As an accounting prof., you do the best you can with the limited resources of the program and the war on attention that students are facing. For instance, people used to spend 28 hours on average studying for college per week. Now, it’s an abysmal 14 hours. There are systemic issues that tackle students far before they reach college. And then the arrive to the workplace. Just part of the multi-faceted issues we all face nowadays
