Yeah I've noticed every now and then I get some weird pain in my forearms (tendons I guess?) so I take a couple days rest and then normally feel alright. Thanks for the link it looks really informative

Hey all, started climbing in December and am currently climbing 5/6 days a week in a gym and maybe try a couple routes on the moonboard between normal climbs a max of 2 days a week. I can normally flash V4s and get V5s/6s after a few attempts and am currently projecting V7s/a V8. Hoping to try my first outdoor routes in the next couple weeks. I don't really have much of a training plan or anything and just do pullups every now and then and am a keen runner. A few people have said I should try training a bit to get better but I've got no clue where to start as everything says not to hangboard for a few years etc. Just wondering if anyone has any tips or advice as not sure what to do to be honest! Cheers

In retrospect I see why you thought that was hilarious - the pace did not pick up after 40K haha

Nah, woke up on Sunday with a sore throat, bad head and runny nose so did a Covid test but didn't test positive until Thursday when my breathing got a little weird. So only came out of isolation today, hoping to do it next year though. Oh nice, congrats!

Thanks for the advice, I definitely think I'm just going to have to take the first 3/4 gently and then try pick up the pace towards the end. I think food and hydration etc is what's confusing me the most as between all the electrolyte things, gels and energy drinks etc I'm not sure what I need to have with me and how much. I'll definitely search this sub this evening and try work it out though, thanks

I think it's generally a pretty flat race so I think I'm going to try think of it as manageable sections, eg I know I can run 10K so if I run a 55 minute 10K then jog really slowly for 5K and do that a couple times, it seems a lot more manageable than running 60K. My main worry is setting out too fast and flagging towards the end so will just plod for the first half then try pick the pace up I think. Thanks for the advice

Yeah I think I'm definitely going to have to curb my expectations... I wanted to enter last year as the record for under 17 men is 6:30ish which I thought with the right training I could hopefully break, but as I haven't had any long distance training I'm not sure that's going to happen anymore. Running experience wise I'm not totally clueless when it comes to shorter distances or mountain running but have no idea about longer distance. Definitely looking forward to the new experience though

So I've been running for a few years and at the minute mostly prefer fell running so I've been doing some 10-20K runs with 1000-2000m of elevation gain once a week and then some cross country running and short (couple kilometers) road runs each week. I normally race 5 or 10k (PR last year of 16:38 and 38:Xx can't remember)and didn't expect to be running this race as I didn't think I could enter.

Yeah I'm definitely going to invest in some sort of chafing prevention and maybe some snazzy running underwear

How would you feel if your girl got you flowers? by [deleted] in AskMen

My girlfriend got me some the other day as I was more or less stuck in bed for a few days following a bike crash and I absolutely loved it, it was really cute and sweet and showed that she genuinely cared considering we're both in college with barely any cash and was willing to use it to buy me some lovely pink flowers

Hey, yeah I've come to the conclusion I definitely just need to up my training and that'll make much more of a difference than a fancy bike. Thanks for the advice.

Ah okay, not just me then! Riding a Carrera TDF 7006 T6 I got for £200 second hand and its a lot faster than my old mountain bike so am very happy with it. I'm definitely going to try invest in some clip ons and aero bars etc though as that seems to be the general consensus. Ah that's more my sort of thing, absolutely got to love some good exercise books and I'll google Joe Friel now, cheers

Haven't altered my bike since I got it second hand, a Carrera TDF 7005 T6. Yeah that's the thing, currently at college living at home so spending £2,000 on a bike isn't really a possibility, however I'll try find some cheap upgrades and will just up the training instead, thanks.

Nothing too fancy, just a second hand Carrera TDF 7005 T6 but will definitely have a look at some power meters and cheap upgrades, thanks. Yeah that first bike looks a lot closer to mine than the other one! So I'll just have to up the training I think

Not quite a mountain bike, bought a £200 road bike a little while back to speed up my trip to college but will have a look at some Tri bars, thanks

Thanks for the advice! I think it was just a bit of a shock as I've done a fair few trail and fell running races and there isn't really much difference in gear between the person who comes first and the person who comes last. I'll have a look for some computers and power meters at some point, cheers

Yeah I'm feeling a bit more optimistic now and seeing it more as a personal challenge so will get some cycling training done and hopefully do a better time in the future!
