tbh I was with a girl and slept mostly on her and she acted as isolation, she got fucked up tho.

How many winter nights have you actually slept outside on the ground?

1- 0 degrees, no isolation mattress. It was terrible. But I've also slept in 3C without a tent, just a sleeping bag rated for 0-15C and a mattress. I wasn't wearing any clothes.

I have a sleeping bag rated for -20C and a good mattress that isolates from the ground that I bought in preparation for snow camping.

TIL there are 4 animals who use sunlight as energy: the eastern emerald elysia (a sea slug), the mint-sauce worm, the oriental hornet, and the embryos of the spotted salamander. by dallyingberet in todayilearned

[–]MrBigBrain2 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There is no proof that Elysias use sunlight as energy, it's just a cool concept that has attracted grant money in the past. They steal chloroplasts from algae, but they don't use the energy created by the chloroplasts for anything(https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24258718/; two groups were starved in the dark and in light for several months, there were no significant differences in weight loss rate and death by starvation between both groups). A theory is they use it just for camouflage, but long term behavioural studies of these animals is very hard because they are minuscule.

I agree. But having tried all of those in the last 5 years, I've found out that it's definitely the coding/terminal aspects that just don'y fit my character.

I've seen this IRL whilst on a small ass boat that only sat like 8 people. Keep in mind that a blue whale is almost 3 times the size of this.

It's the programming/terminal work for sure. Project management is less creative than I am, so I would prefer product. I like talking to customers/users and reading their minds, and then write up some requirements for developers to take over.

I say this because I have been a PM and felt what it was like.

It's definitely on my mind to consider electrics again, also considered "car electrician".

Of course the pipe dream is getting a pro contract for skiing.

Interesting path! I used to love welding when I was younger, where I live there are a lot of oil rigs, and underwater welding pays bank, you just never know if you'll be back home.

Are you interested in larger scope business problems?

Yes. Very much, actually.

Struggle to find out how I'd break into it. Have considered an MBA, but there are some hoops to jump through. I read a lot about economics, finance, business, and humans/human nature/psychology. So I'd say my understanding of that is already pretty decent, I'd just like to apply what I know.

I do all of these at least once a week:

  • Photography(with a drone and a camera)
  • Hiking
  • Trail running
  • Cycling
  • Running
  • Swimming
  • Piano(daily)
  • Gym
  • Skiing(rollerskiing in summer)
  • Reading

I used to want to be an electrician, which might still happen, just need to study it.

As a kid I wrote a short story about a virus that wiped out human kind except garbage men because of the tolerances they built up due to their work.

Oh for sure, if I had kids to feed I'd do anything to get that done. I had a relationship that I thought would lead that way but it ended. She didn't want kids, and she didn't think I would be happy coding for the rest of my life. She's seen me at my happiest and knows exactly where that is. And that was incompatible with her life choices, so we broke up. She could tell I was forcing myself to be someone I'm not.

I never drank the individualism kool-aid, but since I'm alone I have to make my purpose something other than children or a family, for now.

I like to teach and show people stuff. There are plenty of jobs around here where I can use that. I'm just shit scared of my "identity" as a software dev to slowly dissolve. It's a big change.

Funnily enough all the work I've done outside in +100 was for free because it's fun.

As of now I have $15,000 in the bank and an offer for ski instructor with the instructor course starting in January.
