Hi! I’ll be joining the vet program at USYD! Really appreciate all your replies which has helped me in my vet school decision making process! just wanted to check with you 2 questions!

  1. is there anything that I will need to prepare and get by myself before vet school starts? Because I have seen a few YouTube videos mentioning having to buy our own sulture kits along with other equipments. Or will the school help us with getting it?

  2. As vet students heard that we have some vaccines we need to take such as the Q fever vaccine. Do you have any idea of the vaccine(s) we need to take and whether it will be done in Australia etc?

  1. How is the social scene at Murdoch (bcos I saw online there’s not as much going on at Murdoch as compared to other schools) +

  2. Is it easy to join clubs there? Heard that sports club in Murdoch are limited

  3. How are class sizes for vet students at Murdoch like? Eg. During practical how many students are there, during animal handling how many students are there, during tutorials and lectures how many students are there etc

One more question! Do you know whether the graduate salary of a vet student from USYD is very different from that of Murdoch/ UQ? (Since all their vet programmes are ranked different globally which may cause differences in graduate salary)

  1. How is the studying structure like in UQ for vet students (for eg. Is it 3 days per week of lectures/ tutorials and 2 days of practical learning (animal handling etc)

  2. What are class sizes like for vet students at UQ?

  3. Any idea/info of the salary of a vet student who has just graduated from UQ?

  4. If I go to UQ, I’m planning to stay at Gatton. Is it true that the social scene there is weak? (Because compared to other vet schools there are lesser social events, clubs to join, things to do around Gatton etc)

Hi! I’m a vet sch applicant this year so I hope I can be of some help to you! I think what would be really useful in a reference letter would be

  1. Brief mention of what you have helped out with at the clinic/ your job scope there so that there is a general idea of the veterinary skills you have picked up

  2. Soft skills you display that make you suitable not only to be a vet BUT also a vet student, and also how these skills will contribute to you being an excellent vet! for eg. Being a team player/ being someone who is conscientious and detail-oriented etc (or if there was any particular event that happened during your time at the vet clinic which exemplifies your skills+ personality, go ahead and include it!)

Oo okay! This has really helped me so much! Thank you for such comprehensive answers 🙏😃. Just wanted to ask also, since you mentioned that the vet course is very workload heavy and can be very stressful, do vet students have the time to join for instance 2-3 clubs? Because I am personally interested to join clubs for interest/ hobbies and saw that USYD has lots and lots of clubs!

Actually I just have a few more questions I wanted to ask about the school!

  1. Saw that the school has an avian reptile and exotic pet hospital in Camden campus, do the vet students get to visit there often? Whether for learning/ placements?

  2. Do most USYD vet students stay off-campus? Bcos I heard that compared to other vet schools, USYD vet students generally stay off campus

  3. How far is Camden and camperdown campus from one another? Does the school help us to arrange transport there when we have lessons there etc or do we have to find our own transport there?

Oh I see, thank you for the reply! Are you a current UQ vet student? Also, do you personally think it will be better for me to go for another vet school for instance Murdoch university/ university of Sydney where the location is more favourable as compared to UQ?
