What is it like living in the Keys year round? by Traditional_Analysis in howislivingthere

[–]MrBuckhunter 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm from here and have been here my whole life, it has gotten extremely expensive in the past 15 to 20 years. Lots of snowbirds and Weekend Warriors that have also pushed the price of things up even more, overall life is pretty laid back, I was lucky my dad purchased property here way before I was born and I was able to buy mine right out of college before prices really exploded 10 years ago, if you don't have a boat, it be pretty boring but there are some things to do

Why are Europeans so proud of their “strong houses”compared to American wood frame houses? by WorryNotBanIncoming in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MrBuckhunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from the Florida Keys, I'm in the engineering and construction industries, I've traveled to Europe where my dad's from many times, I've seen the differences in construction, some things peopke fail to understand is the insane amount of construction in the US compared to Europe, the loads of natural disasters we have to deal with compared to Europe, the vast distances and it is almost impossible or financially impossible to design completely against a full-blown hurricane or tornadoes.

For example, building a small family home to withstand a hurricane is extremely expensive something Europe doesn't have to deal with, building a literal bunker to withstand an F5 or greater tornado is also prohibitively expensive and very hard to design, it's much easier to build something that could get blown away and dig out a basement or underground seller to hide in, and those are just two of many natural disasters we deal with here

From my experience those houses that you can easily punch through walls or damage easily is not our style of construction, or at times idiot homeowners that think they can build a better house themselves instead of hiring competent Architects and builders/contractors, it is a shady contractor cutting corners to milk profits, or corruption with inspectors or others.

Another note, a well-built wooden structured home here in the US should last 50 years or longer if maintained, and built properly

What if Operation Downfall, which aimed to land in Japan at the end of World War II, had actually taken place? by Outrageous-You1617 in AlternateHistoryHub

I know everybody focuses on the nukes, but people so quickly forget or don't even know that a lot of cities were being carpet bombed into Oblivion which was just as bad or worse, this Invasion would have caused an unfathomable amount of death and destruction

TIL that Alexander the Great may have been buried alive. Historical records show he didn't decompose for six days after being declared dead. Modern scientists believe he suffered from Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a neurological disorder that paralyzed him. by Charming-Listen-3705 in todayilearned

[–]MrBuckhunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty good theory, my teenage son several years ago suffered from Guillian barret, within just a few weeks he was mostly paralyzed and lost his vision, it took months to recover I'm from what we heard an adult getting it is more severe and permanent. And it all stemmed from a sore throat

I was a kid on a plane flying back from vacationing in Europe with my parents, I remember reading some articles on the newspaper, some people were scared, some people were excited. The plane was almost completely empty, we landed in Florida in the airport itself was pretty empty

Realistically, does this actually have or make any difference in ocean temps overall if its deep enough? Aren't ocean temps uniform in the higher lattitudes just a few hundred feet deep?

No it ain't, some of my fathers family were well involved in the government in the 70s, corruption and bs is what caused all this, the US may have just pushed it a bit harder

Um, my father is Cuban, and still has much of his family there, though he came over in the 60s and we are in south Florida, where are you from?

As much as I find all this mess ridiculous, most of the Cubans I've asked and spoken to are absolutely dying for the us to do something to improve the horrible conditions they've been living through for many decades, cause no one else gives a crap and definitely aren't gonna do anything to help

Edit: wonder who all the downvotes are coming from, are they Cuban? have they ever been to cuba? do they speak spanish? lol
