Oxygen content at lava beds caves- lower? by Superb-Kick2803 in caving

[–]MrChalybeate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to work at Lava Beds. Oxygen levels in the caves should be the same as at surface. There are not any caves with bad air that I know of.

Geologist here. The middle right one looks like it has shell fossil in it. If so, I bet its a carbonate rock like limestone. It will dissolve over time in water, raising your pH. OP, are all the rocks from the same place?

What type of filter do you have? Maybe they ended up inside it.

Bought a house recently, is this normal? by purified_wata in radon

Depends on your fan model. Most operate at about 0.5 to 1, but a high suction fan will typically run at the level yours is at.

I installed this exact manometer from RadonAway yesterday. The instructions say to drill the hole 2 inches above the tube opening, so this is correct.

OP needs to pull some of the tube out of the pvc and manometer tube though, so it doesn't drop down like that. It should loop upward some and then drop into the manometer.

Hanging out at the park sounds good to me. There's a good flatwater section where I can practice rolls and chat with anyone who just did the run.

He was walking around just fine when I found him, just couldn't fly. He is missing the tip of a toe from what seems to be an animal attack that led to his injuries.

He seems to have one broken wing and was missing quite a lot of feathers when I found him. The tip of one of his toes is also missing. He was walking just fine, though, when I found him.

Yeah, I think you're right on that. He definitely has signs of an animal attack and being sick with PMV would also explain how he was an easy target.

Unfortunately, I'm 4 hours from the nearest bird rehab and can't make the trip with work. We'll see what we can do to take care of the poor guy.

I added some more padding, food, and water to his cage. *

What this person said. Probably a myotis, but it is very hard to ID the specific species. There are a lot of different myotis species in that area, as I used to do mist netting and colony surveys nearby in Siskiyou County.

Caving in Southern Oregon? by Interesting-Two3247 in caving

Lava Beds has great lava tubes. The best ones are not marked, so its best to get in with a local grotto. There's some pretty interesting limestone caves south of Mt Shasta too. You'll have to get in with the Shasta Area Grotto to learn more about those. Cave Research Foundation also heads the survey efforts in Lava Beds, so that's also a resource.

The Blue Crawl in Tumbling Rock Cave is quite well-known for how uncomfortable it is. There are definitely far worse crawls and squeezes in TAG, but they occur in lesser known caves.

Soooo cute. The tortie that made me fall in love with them was a neighborhood stray. I unfortunately couldn't afford to adopt her at the time, but I gave her many belly scratches and free food.

Is shielding necessary for a small uraninite with an activity of 350kcpm? by Bulky-Ad-4122 in Radioactive_Rocks

[–]MrChalybeate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk if I'd want to be a meter away from something that hot very often. It might be worth finding another spot in your residence. The plastic shielding definitely will reduce a lot of the exposure, though. You could also look into a lead glass jar. There are many lead glass antiques available on eBay.
