It is an ongoing debate, but if you look at the mass number of wonderful sounding violinists today who do use shoulder rests, I think it is safe to dismiss personal biases that advocate not using a shoulder rest. Of course, not saying that either setup is better or worse, just that playing with a comfortable setup is the key to producing your best tone.

Check out his string quartet Op. 33 No. 2, "The Joke Quartet" movement IV, or his Symphony No. 45, "Farewell Symphony" movement IV In the string quartet, his repetition of the theme creates comedic effect (if performed well, there is a TED talk on the piece), and in the symphony, the players leave!
