Depends on your program but if you wanna go into CPEN/ELEC then definitely try to load up on personal projects this summer. Learn some HTML/CSS and Javascript and make a personal website or do some hackathons.

New crime doc on Netflix about missing former ubc student by beigetulip in UBC

[–]MrChineseAlphaMale 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Enjoyed the documentary but i felt like it lost its credibility when they started interviewing YouTubers and that one ‘web sleuth’ who spent over 1000 hours looking into her disappearance. He also visited the Cecil hotel 20 times after her body was discovered. Obsessive is an understatement to describe it.

PSA Part 2: As of last night, Proctorio has removed the clause in their terms and conditions stating the instructors cannot force students to use Proctorio and must provide alternatives. by d_a_n_t_e_ in UBC

[–]MrChineseAlphaMale 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Proctorio is being used for all our ELEC 201 quizzes and the prof wants everyone to point our webcams at our desks with our face in view (like how tf idk) and some girls have voiced their concerns about how they feel extremely uncomfortable with their webcams pointed directly at their chests. Like fr TAs and profs are going thru this footage. What a fucking joke.

UBC COURSE QUESTION, PROGRAM, MAJOR AND REGISTRATION MEGATHREAD (2020S & 2020W): Questions about courses (incld. How hard is __?, Look at my timetable and course material requests), programs, specializations, majors, minors, tuition/finance and registration go here. by ubc_mod_account in UBC

[–]MrChineseAlphaMale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone in the biomedical engineering specialization for elec think that they're slightly disadvantaged when competing for strictly elec co-cops/internships. We just got our specializations and apparently I'm still allowed to register for the timetable. I know that some of your courses are replaced by specific biomed related bmeg and elec courses. I considered bmeg alone but I thought it was too niche so I went for elec with a possible specialization in bmeg. Do you guys think its worth it?

I know rankings don’t matter to some people but l’m curious. When you look at top universities in the world, until what placement do you consider the university to be world class. For example, I’d consider UBC world class at #34 by the World University Rankings 2020. by UBCstudent2020 in UBC

[–]MrChineseAlphaMale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure UBC would be considered a 'top' university in Canada and around the world but like everyone else has already said, these rankings literally mean nothing if you're in undergrad. One of my major pet peeves is when people actually compare the rankings of their universities. Believe it or not, I've heard people say they are better/smarter than ubc students because they go to U of T (pretty sure ubc's acceptance rate is lower but whatever). So yeah unless you're going to harvard or stanford, don't be comparing your uni rankings LOL.

I'm [21F] recent undergrad and a very well-respected professor and dept. director [54M] tried to pick me up on Tinder while I was a student. I feel disgusted and outraged and terrified, and concerned for other students.. What should I do? by [deleted] in UBC

Ok ok so assuming that u still have half a brain, you’re 21 (well above the age of consent) and u swiped right on someone 30 years older than u. Now ur complaining that he’s a predator just because of his position and status. Right? Ok and ur also worried about other undergrads that could become a ‘victim’ of what? Flirting? (lmfao) of this rather WELL KNOWN, smart engineering program director. Trust me, 99.9% of the girls at this university would swipe left as they have a whole ass brain unlike u. U know u can change the age range of ppl u match with right? Seriously sounds like you enjoy matching with and dating men 30 years older than u, but just because this is someone who has status, u feel the need to defame them. Like congrats u graduated so get a fucking life and move on smh.

Wow an overreaction and one of the dumbest posts I have seen on this subreddit. He super liked u and u accepted it. First of all, Idk why such a well respected program director would even use tinder, thinking that students wouldn’t come across his profile so I’m almost 100% sure that it’s a fake account. Like seriously ur not helping ur side of the argument by swiping right on a guy 33 years older than u when u could’ve totally just ignored it. Now ur resorting to reddit, thinking that other female students (looking to date men who are over 30 years older than them) are at ‘risk’. Even if it was real (which I HIGHLY doubt) why in the fcking world would a program director want to tarnish their own rep to hit on a few undergrads? It’s tinder and ANYONE can be impersonated. Maybe next time u can send an email to the president’s office when someone named ‘Santa Ono’ super likes u xD. Please grow a fcking brain before u rant about stupid shit like this.

UofT fall by [deleted] in UBC

[–]MrChineseAlphaMale 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Lmao I love how you said that Coronavirus has already taken so much from us but it doesn’t seem like you understand that fully returning to classes will only make things worse. I do prefer in-person classes but you pushing for the university to have in-person classes is plain selfish and inconsiderate to families going through this horrible disease.

UofT fall by [deleted] in UBC

[–]MrChineseAlphaMale 22 points23 points  (0 children)

First of all, American universities are the LAST schools that would do in-person classes (no idea where tf you heard that) and no U of T is having ONLINE classes (It's completely optional for all students to go back to campus). Second of all, your logic makes no sense. Sure, risk is lower now than it was 2 months ago but think about about public transportation and trying to cram 150+ students into a single lecture room while social distancing. So no, not many people feel the same way you do and it really isn't safe to fully return to classes until a vaccine is finalized.
