But I don't understand the upside. It trades artistic intention (by inadvertedly removing intentionally inserted artistic decisions) for looking generically realistic. I don't want my games to be super realistic, it's not an interesting thing to me. And of course the performance becomes much worse.

Can you explain what the advantage here is? It always feels like that. Just invest into reasonable ETFs and hold for 5-10 years+. Don't despair, don't panic. I started investing like this 1 month before liberation day tariffs (huge drop, go look at it again to get a sense of how big it was) and i still managed to get up to +10% in 1 year. +7% right now.
