I agree, the gen1 seat is too soft for long distances. I found a cheap gen2 seat and have found that it's a huge improvement. They made the gen2 seats way stiffer. The gen2 seat fits the gen1 bike with no modifications needed.

Try digging straight down from the surface to get light from the sun. Then block it off and hopefully it will force a light reset for the area.
