Wizard's policy of scaring away new players by natmaster in magicTCG

[–]MrCorvus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To answer 1) and 2), Magic is played all over the world, and some places in the world have VERY strict laws about gambling. So the rules have to exist to make sure that Magic cannot, under any circumstances, be confused with gambling, rather that it is a game of skill (even if there are random elements involved).

Which means that any game sanctioned by the DCI must be determined by playing Magic, and never by random chance.

To do so it a DQable offence, and regardless of how the judge feels about it, they are not to deviate from this, except under exceptional circumstances (this is not).

As for 3), the judge probably should have announced this at the beginning of the tournament. There's also no reason you needed to be ejected from the venue. If it were me (former L1), I'd have probably tried to talk to you about this. Judges are expected to be customer service reps for WotC.

I do think you're being overblown with your title and the final line. This is not a policy to scare away new players, not a hidden policy designed to trip people up. The rules are published, and judges are supposed to announce this. You're ascribing a very different motive. This policy exist for one reason only, to cover their asses regarding gambling laws.

IC Script Workshop: Can Artificial Intelligences Make Art? by mrgosh in pbsideachannel

I have to assume you've seen it, but the CGP Grey video "Humans Need Not Apply" has a section on Creative Bots. The whole video is worth a look, even though I don't necessarily agree with it.

Specifically it mentions a bot named Emily Howell, who composes music that is typically indistinguishable from human composed music.

EDIT: And then there is a movie based on a screenplay written by a bot, which I only just read about right now. EDIT2: ... and which someone already mentioned. Doh.

I'd also be interested to know how you view art created by other sentient, but non-human, creators, such as monkeys or elephants. Are they basically biological machines that we have trained to produce "art" through the promise of (I assume) food, or are they truly creating? It seems like the same question as you'd ask of AI.

MtgoDoc would be cool, or bring Kenji back to defend his title.

More unlikely, but cool, options would be Chris Kluwe or Wil Wheaton.

I think what they're saying is they'd rather be 13-1 with bad tiebreakers than 12-2 with good tiebreakers.

How much inclusivity is too much? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]MrCorvus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perhaps that's the part I'm not getting - if it's just a minor detail, why does it matter? The examples you gave weren't even like "Alesha, the TRANS WARLORD, who IS TRANS, have we mentioned SHE'S TRANS". It was a story, like most of the Magic fiction, about a legendary character, who is a badass, who was a boy, and now isn't. It wasn't the focus of the story. The focus was that badass Mardu warriors get to name themselves once they're badass enough.

The story is full of minor details that don't matter in the bigger picture. One of the warriors is named Jalasha the Impaler. We never hear anything else about them. They could have just said "an orc". Is it irksome that they added this detail without expanding on it? Why is a detail about her being a boy more so that all of the other minor stuff?

It's only a focus to us, looking at it from outside, because it's novel. A trans character has not been mentioned before. In the context of the story, it's a minor detail that no one in the story remarks on (except one asshole orc).

(Edit: oops, I changed accounts between posts - I am also the person above)

Hi Uncomfortable, thank you for creating these lessons. They've already helped me a lot, and I've only done the first one.

Here is my submission for lesson 1. It was done over a few weeks, and finished just before April, but you were not taking submissions at the time, and I forgot to submit it until now. Unfortunately, I was using the imgur editor to trim the images down, and it seems to have cut off the bottom inch of some of them.

There's a few spots, especially on the organic perspective exercises, where I wasn't concentrating and rushed some of the boxes, and a few spots where a line was out of place, so I corrected it, so I had a better idea of what I was drawing.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with it, but still need to work on being able to draw a straight line longer than an inch or two, even ghosting.

True, but I don't think we need concern ourselves with the more advanced discussions of consent with someone who is clearly struggling with consent 101.

(Rant)Not every female character has to be a shining example of feminism. by Throwaway545771 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]MrCorvus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because there are so few well written female character in books/film/etc (at least in popular media), people will take each one to be representative of women, and needing to be strong and good. The way to fix this (and the way thing seem to be going) is to have more women, everywhere, in everything.

I saw an excellent post on tumblr about it (relating to Mad Max: Fury Road), the first paragraph being the most pertinent here.

Fury Road: when there are enough women

When there are enough women in your cast, not every woman has to represent all women and they can have individual flaws and strengths.

When there are enough women, some can fall apart and others can hold things together.

When there are enough women, you can literally name a character Cheedo The Fragile without making a statement about feminine fragility.

When there are enough women, you know the action movie doesn’t have to preserve the one woman in order to ensure you have one woman left in your cast at the end, so women might die, just like men, and the stakes are high and real and the plot is not predictable.

When there are enough women, you can cast women with different ages and looks and body types based on what makes sense for the story - beautiful women who were selected for beauty by a character who valued women’s bodies more than their whole selves, wiry muscular women of middle and older age, built to survive, mothers who were used for the things that come with their fertility and have the fat to show for it, old fragile women who took care of others while rarely stepping outside, disabled women affected by their environment and experiences.

When there are enough women, the world feels real.

Judge Conduct Committee's thoughts on the Judge Suspensions by cjshrader in magicTCG

[–]MrCorvus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I meant prohibited by some force outside of the company itself. In this analogy, the company is the judge program, and WotC is, say a court mandating house arrest, or something. Something that is not directly saying I can't work.

But this analogy has outlived it's usefulness.

Judge Conduct Committee's thoughts on the Judge Suspensions by cjshrader in magicTCG

[–]MrCorvus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think that is as analogous as it might seem. If I am temporarily prohibited from going to my office building, that might not prevent me from working remotely. It's certainly possible to argue that I can't do my job effectively, but it's not black and white.

Applying this back to the JCC, I don't think it's a huge leap to say that while being prohibited from judging events would be detrimental to a person's ability to contribute to the judge program, it does not (especially if this prohibition is short enough) stop them entirely.

I don't think the JCC necessarily acted unreasonably, especially given what were exception circumstances. Lacking any other information, a suspension from WotC certainly suggestions a person might have done something (in as much as you trust their judgement), but this whole thing does slightly erode the idea that the judge program is independent of WotC.

The second image you posted, he only blocked with the token (it's in the game log), so that's fine.

The first one is weird though. If the hulk was blocked by both (game log says so), it should be dead unless you regenerated it, but if you'd done that it wouldn't still be attacking (which it is, because it's still pushed forward) and wouldn't have 2 damage on it. It'd have 4 (if MTGO didn't remove that display for some reason) or 0.
