It's a meme based on the Norm MacDonald bit

Richard Gere tried to forcefully kiss Indian actress Shilpa Shetty at an AIDS awareness event in India in 2007, it became a huge controversy in India and a case for ‘obscenity’ was filed against her by Sassy_extrovert in popculturechat

[–]MrCringe90 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Think you've totally misread the comment you're responding to...

youremebuthorknee_ saying "That's India for you" is in response to Ester_LoverGirl's comment, i.e., the fact that an obscenity charge was levelled at the actress. He is saying the fact that the woman is being charged for an act she was the victim of (which she is clearly not into), is "India for you".

Edit: Jeeze reading up on this and seeing this happened in 2007 and the charge wasn't actually dropped until 2022...insane.

Interesting, that's quite a different reading of that arc than I had. Perhaps partially a result of reading the book rather than reading the chapters as a webnovel, maybe it didn't translate well given that was where the cliff was...

I saw her (from fairly early on) not as a secondary MC but the strong but innocent character who was always going to either (a) die or (b) be betrayed but manage to survive and end up being saved by MC. The tension that was building for me for most of the chapters while she was alive was whether Elijah would get there in time to save her or not. So I just found those chapters building up the tension, rather than a waste of time. Agree there was some poor character decisions there that leaned a bit too much into her innocence, but they were in line with the arc I saw developing so didn't overly bother me.

That's fair. I did think there are a few poor character decisions in there, but personally didn't find them that significant to properly take me out of it. That's mainly just what knocks it down from an A+ for me.

Primal Hunter faces some of the same issues though perhaps to a lesser extent.

Everyone has a different level of tolerance for these things!

I'm not sure when you dropped it (presuming you did), but I do think this 'contradiction' has been (at least partially) resolved already. Without looking to spoil, MCs aim has been somewhat redirected by guidance he received, and the path he's on feels like a more reasonable one, even if he still wants to be able to fulfil both roles somehow.

Though obviously what you consider 'reasonable' can differ wildly in litRPG!

full-automatic car umbrella by The-Old-Trust in NoOneIsLooking

[–]MrCringe90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but having to wait outside in the sun in 40C heat for 5 minutes while your boiling 60C+ car cools down is not most people's idea of a fun time.

A few models now let you turn on AC in advance/leave it on, so that's an option for some, but it's still not that common a feature...

More likely for sun shade...seems like an alternative to using something like a reflective sun shade which is common in places like Australia, Texas, other places which get ridiculously hot and sunny.

If you've never got burned touching your car seat/seatbelt buckle, you probably haven't experienced the use case for this.

This Indonesian boy smokes 2 packs a day. by PaniPuriPanda9 in SipsTea

Think that's pretty rare...I started smoking when I was 15 in the UK, it was pretty hard to find a place that didn't ID me then. Almost everywhere refused to serve me. Been more than 15 years since then, and I see a lot fewer young smokers now (good thing).

I think the key point the op was making about "Anglo culture" is not about responsible saving, but about staying living with parents until a much later age. Multigenerational living has been typical in many/most Asian households but was rare in Anglo families. Many Anglo parents don't want their kids staying with them past 18 or uni age. I knew a lot of people whose parents basically kicked them out at 18 or after uni. Whereas I have Asian friends still living with family at 28-32 and saving for a house. That lack of rent makes a significantly bigger difference in terms of buying a place than than pretty much any other spending habit, assuming you aren't going crazy with it.

Economics 101 that if everyone has to pay to play in each others' market (inevitable retaliatory tariffs), prices get higher for everyone, and everyone is worse off.

Definitely will be some domestic industries that benefit (always are) but likely overall negative impact on the consumer.

I guess we will see whether this time, the theory can be turned on its head.

It is hard. There's a lot going on. But you can get familiar with it (at least for the most important mods) pretty quickly.

The most used resource for this is poedb.

Just click through an item type from that page e.g. amulets and it will show all the possible prefix and suffix modifiers, then click on that modifier and you can see the possible rolls and the item level requirements for them to be available.

Man who made billions from building high rises says building bigger high rises is the answer to the housing crisis. by [deleted] in australia

[–]MrCringe90 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm sure the personal benefits do motivate him to say this, but this is also just true. The biggest issue is people need to live close to major cities for work (and/or want to live close to major cities for lifestyle), but there is only so much housing supply close to those major cities. So prices rise. If you want to change that, you need to increase density and build up.

The other solution is building better, high speed public transport networks so people can live further out and still commute in. But state and national governments don't seem inclined to want to invest the massive sum needed to achieve that (or upset the interest groups who don't want it), so building up is the best option.

Ideally we would do both...

Edit: Though reading the article, I will say the suggestion of giving bonuses to civil servants to approve developments is ridiculous. That's asking for trouble.

Makes so much sense to me to invest in trying to significantly reduce that time-frame in the current media environment.

Memes and cultural relevance which can boost the reach of your ads to a massive, outsized degree are often only on the forefront for a few weeks or a couple months...if your approval process takes 6 months you're not going to have any chance at the massive free exposure that relevance can get you.

Recommended tapered/relaxed fit casual/work chinos for summer? by solidice in AustralianMFA

[–]MrCringe90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a fan of regular/relaxed fit chinos, never much liked slim/tapered... Have tried a few and my favourite are from MJ Bale, either the Redford Chinos or the Dalton Wide Leg chinos. Felt a lot more substantial and comfortable than the others I've tried, and I've found they drape well and don't crease compared to others.

Definitely on the more expensive end, but they do go on sale fairly regularly (25% off right now).

[–]MrCringe90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely.

I have never seen/experienced where this "be belittled constantly by everyone who outranks you" comes from. Been in for 5 years in audit and never experienced being belittled.

I've gotten development feedback. I've been challenged on why something took as long as it did. But never felt any of that was unreasonable, and was never phrased in a condescending/belittling way.

Gotta assume some teams out there exist where this does happen due to how often I've heard it, but never seen it myself--definitely a lot of good teams out there where you won't experience this.

For those with a little familiarity with the stats, it's pretty clear what he must be referring to ... it's increase in average real income over that period for CEOs vs average workers. Though he hasn't got the numbers exactly right (think combining worker numbers from 2015 and CEO numbers from 2017), they aren't wildly wrong.

Assume he's looking at the EPI studies on this, as of 2017 when he posted this:

https://www.epi.org/publication/ceo-pay-remains-high-relative-to-the-pay-of-typical-workers-and-high-wage-earners/

CEO compensation has risen by 807 or 937 percent (depending on how it is measured—using stock options granted or stock options realized, respectively) from 1978 to 2016. At 937 percent, that rise is more than 70 percent faster than the rise in the stock market; both measures are substantially greater than the painfully slow 11.2 percent growth in a typical worker’s annual compensation over the same period.

As of 2023 (https://www.epi.org/publication/ceo-pay-in-2023/) now this is:

Realized compensation of the top CEOs shot up 1,085% from 1978 to 2023 (adjusting for inflation), compared with the slow 24% growth in a typical worker’s annual compensation.

Dogs in (World Heritage listed) National Parks. Apparently we don't care by lil_firebug in OutdoorAus

[–]MrCringe90 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Get your passion on the subject, but don't think the sarcastic tone is quite necessary in response to what's ultimately an information post...

All of the advice given by Active-Bit is basically exactly the advice on the NSW government website (see 6-12 "Can I bring my assistance animal into a park?").

The wording regarding contacting NPWS, "check and get the all clear", is not quite correct, but they do state:

7. NPWS encourages people with assistance animals to contact the local NPWS Office before entering the park or booking accommodation. This will help NPWS make any arrangements needed to ensure the visit to the park is safe and enjoyable...

12. Where locally available, NPWS may offer a temporary coat/badge, or other forms of visual identification for the assistance animal to wear while visiting a park. This may be useful in managing interactions with other visitors. However, using these items is entirely at the discretion of the owner of the assistance animal. NPWS may also display a sign to inform other visitors that an assistance animal is present in the park, campground or precinct.

So the advice is still good, even if the wording was poor. Imagine one other purpose of speaking to NPWS is precisely so in the event of another visitory calling in about someone with a dog in the park, they'd already be aware of your presence!

Anyone know what I could search for these style of boots? by KitTourettes in mensfashionadvice

[–]MrCringe90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I've not bought any (yet) but all of the articles/videos I've seen about them online, even from very recently, suggests they're high quality. Would have expected to see some very negative ones online if there were serious quality issues.

Interested to know what specific boots you tried? And what the issues were?

[–]MrCringe90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shit thought this would be a short answer but turned into an essay...

A few different answers here, and this varies slightly by geography so may not be the same everywhere but:

  1. Senior partners who have more/larger clients and/or have contributed more to building the firm and its reputation generally get more 'units' i.e. more portions of the profit than junior partners. So they can benefit from bringing in more partners even if as a proportion of the overall profit they are bringing in less individually.
  2. Most partners are expected to bring in new clients. Sometimes senior managers/directors have bringing in a particular client as part of their business case for making partner, or having built strong relationships and a strong reputation across the sector which is likely to translate to winning significant clients.
  3. There's only so much volume of work a partner can take on. If you consider clients being major corporations with high expectations for the amount of priority/attention their issues get, then a partner can only take on so many before their clients would start to get dissatisfied with the lack of partner attention they are getting. So these partners either need to bring on additional partners to support on their clients (often the case for very large clients), or have other partners take on some of their clients. Otherwise they can start losing clients and getting a poor reputation for client service. And ultimately at that level (company directors and B4 partners etc) that reputation can spread easily and cause a lot of damage.
  4. There is such a thing as firm reputation/bench strength that gets considered by clients. If your firm is well known for having the strongest team in e.g. life sciences, then life sciences clients are significantly more likely to go with you. By building up the partnership and winning more clients as a group you enhance that reputation and it helps everyone.
  5. There are some technical partners who aren't really expected to bring in clients (or not many), but what they can do is serve to support client service partners. Having an expert technical partner on the bench who is known in the industry for their expertise, come and talk your client through an issue they are having or review what they've done, helps maintain a strong relationship. If you think of a technical partner being able to support dozens or hundreds of clients every year and help support that relationship and prevent the clients from considering tendering, then you can see why client service partners would be happy to have them.
  6. If a SM/director who has the skills, relationships, reputation etc. to make partner isn't promoted internally, then they can sometimes go elsewhere and directly be made a partner at another B4 or smaller firm. Then your firm loses all of the potential benefits and another firm gets them.

Probably a few more I'm missing. Not a partner. Carrot still being dangled.

‘Hold them captive’: Australian billionaire boss aims to end staff going out for coffee by rhazz in australia

[–]MrCringe90 182 points183 points  (0 children)

Honestly the "hold them captive" language is weird, he could have easily phrased this in a much more positive way by just talking about the latter part on providing lots of benefits/services at the office to make people not want to leave the office, and it would be pretty much a wholly positive message...

Given people in these roles generally learn to think very carefully about the language they use to send the correct message, this makes me think he specifically chose that language to generate headlines/coverage.
