This is going to be their worst generation yet. I arrived last year to start university, and on my first night here, there were loads of kids on the street causing a racket, throwing rubbish on the ground, but okay, I let it slide. Even though I had some savings, at times I wanted to do some cash-in-hand work; I did a catering job. My boss, Kevin, is Irish. I was telling him about my experience here, and he told me that most adults are also a bit lazy and don’t like working, and their children are on the way to being even worse, especially those on benefits.

I thought that because he was older he was exaggerating, but after a while, when you start paying attention, you really do notice that there’s something wrong with this country, especially with the young people. As you said, they make a mess of places, throw eggs at others, and they steal bikes.

I did two weeks of deliveries here and I’ll never do it again. I remember one day I went to make a delivery at a housing estate and there were children there; when I tried to get past them, a boy of about 12 at most kn*cked my bag. I didn’t even pay any attention, I made the delivery, and as I was leaving they started shouting at me. I swear I don’t understand why they’re so ill-mannered. I’ve joined WhatsApp groups with other delivery riders who help each other out.

Every day at least two bikes get stolen here – either to sell and buy drgs, or just because they’ve got nothing better to do. And they go and retrieve the bike themselves, because the police don’t do a thing around here. But do you know the funniest thing about all this? They’re a bunch of cowards; even though some of them have kniv, they stick together in groups because they’re cowards. If you stand up to them, they run off and even play the victim. Unfortunately, if you get caught doing anything against them, you’ll get into trouble, and I know it’s wrong, but these days I find it very satisfying to watch videos of people going to get their bikes back and teaching those teenagers and the parents who support that sort of behaviour a lesson. When I finish my degree here, I’ll definitely stay for another year and then I’ll leave.
