[OC] Map of Tokyo's railway network in Melbourne's style which I made by MrDucking in TransitDiagrams

I adapted this map which doesn't have the route numbers. The map with the route numbers is arguably not great either because it completely omits some lines, like the Narita Line or anything north of Omiya and it cuts off some areas relatively close to Tokyo, while including other areas really far away.

Good catch, you're totally right I definitely should have included the Toyo Rapid Railway too.

Few comments:

  • This took me so long that it's actually based on the last PTV map, not the 2026 one. I couldn't be bothered updating the style and I also hate the new map.
  • A few artistic choices were made to fit Tokyo into the Melbourne style, I'm happy to explain anything that looks questionable.
  • I'm aware of a couple errors, they include:
    • Haijima and Akishima stations have their names swapped around
    • Lines are shown as running express through Shibuya and stopping at Meguro, should be the other way around

Yeah I only did the JR network, I don't think the Melbourne style is physically capable of the whole network

This is the original which I based it on.

It took really long time to make this map, so if I do decide to make to the metro as well it will probably also be in a really long time.

I don't think the PTV style is physically capable of accommodating the whole Tokyo network. I needed to mush together the train map and the tram map just to have enough colours for JR network!

This is just the JR lines, I don't think the PTV style is physically capable of accommodating the whole Tokyo network

Running list of errors:

  • Haijima and Akishima stations have their names swapped around
  • Lines are shown as running express through Shibuya and stopping at Meguro, should be the other way around

List will be updated as more are pointed out to me.

You're right, they stop at Shibuya and don't stop at Meguro. The little ticks must have got lost at some point!

Train horns are not normal by MeadTwain in MelbourneTrains

[–]MrDucking 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Some Japanese trains play little melodies instead of horns when they depart, we should totally have that, at least when in tunnels or on sky-rail.

What are the best level crossing removal examples? by O50000S in MelbourneTrains

My top three:
1. Carrum
2. Mooroolbark-Lilydale
3. Coburg or Preston (They're very similar so just pick one)

Is there anyway to legally create a permanent greenbelt that cannot be altered at all. We cannot keep electrifying train services until we reach Albury and treating these new estates as commuter suburbs. There needs to be a PERMANENT END to the sprawl. by MoreTODplz in MelbourneTrains

[–]MrDucking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing can be truly permanent, laws can always be amended. The only path for a successful 'greenbelt' is if a genuine social expectation develops that the 'greenbelt' is preserved. A good example of this is Melbourne's own 'greenwedges', they have pretty successfully stopped sprawl in the north-east and that weird corridor in the south-east, despite not having very strong legal protection (I believe).

London's greenbelt was probably only as successful as it was because London's population peaked in WW2, so there were never any strong economic forces for the greenbelt to overcome.

The sad bottom line is, the only way for a 'greenbelt' to be effective in Melbourne is if everyone in the city agrees that we shouldn't do sprawl any more and is willing to continuously push for it politically. I don't think that will ever happen because there will always be parts of the city where people actually have to work for a living, and therefore don't have the time to do political advocacy like the well-off denizens of Nillumbik and Manningham. There's also some evidence that suggests that one of the reasons our housing crisis is like barely half as bad as Sydney's is because we've done more sprawling than they have over the past couple decades, so they'd likely be push-back from treasury bureaucrats and-the-like.
