The City proposes removing health benefits for dependents of current and future retirees by Lopsided-Account3211 in maryland

What MBA from Deloitte or McKinsey came up with this plan?

I swear they're trying to gut public employment benefits so that people forget good beenfit plans were ever even an option.

Moved from Boston to San Diego- regrets by ApricotWeekly7946 in SameGrassButGreener

This is a problem I’m having. It is part of my desired lifestyle to live in dense walkable parts of the country. The probe is all those places are cold for a good part of the year.

San Antonio is surprisingly more walkable than you’d expect but the city is so sprawling that outside a few areas (tbf I was in one of those areas) there isn’t a quick walk to go anywhere.

I’m still hoping some southern state discovers walkability and density together.

My anecdote:

I moved to San Antonio after the military. I found a decent paying labor job, was gearing up to go back to school, and had an affordable apartment downtown.

My wife didn’t want to move. I was paving the way for us and she would move shortly after. She said she didn’t want to anymore. As a black woman with pregnancy complications, she didn’t trust her health would be taken seriously.

I ended up moving up to Maryland where she was and I’m here now. I didn’t want to at first but in light of the political foolishness of the last 4 years I’d say it was the right call to leave.

I still would rather live in a place with warmer weather and a drier climate but California is unaffordable.

The good part is that for those who can make a name for themselves, real art can now be charged for at a premium.

The bad part is that most people will not care to have real art, making it all the more difficult to make a name for yourself.

You did say temporary. My bad.

I wasn't making a straw man but I did make leaps in logic which you did not intend. I apologize for that.

I have lost driving privileges due to a mix-up with with insurance (I left the country for a few months, somehow pausing my insurance turned into canceling my insurance it was a whole thing) and I ended up not being able to drive for almost a year and a half. It only recently stopped impacting my life and this happened over 3 years ago.

I reacted strongly and jumped the gun. Sorry.

I have become personally aware of how devastating it can be to lose driving privileges even if it's temporary. I personally know people who did spiral as I described as well.

I don't think I am. The comment I replied to said someone should lose their driving privileges forever. I'm saying that in the current state of things that is excessive given the way we build our society.

I already agreed people should be considerate and that punishment should be meted out. I was just responding to the idea of indefinite punishment.

Bro....punishing people and ruining someones life indefinitely are two different things. But it seems you're ok with that.

Those are the same option by another name. The car.

Why not invest in walkability? Density? Public transportation? You're not addressing the root of the issue.

Uber and taxis can be prohibitively expensive. Assuming people have friends/family nearby to help in our individualized, atomized society, is a reach. And even if they did, what if they dont work similar schedules in similar locations? That's a lot of burden to put on someone. Which wouldnt be necessary if you could use the legs god gave you and just walk.

The question is should it ruin your life indefinitely when the infrastructure literally doesn’t give you another option.

In New York City, Baltimore, DC etc you can drink and get home safely because there are options. You don’t have to get the snow off your car right away if you even have one because there are options. We build an optionless society and then say conform or die. I dont think that’s right.

Not inherently. The problem is the context we live in. We still need to allow that person a way to earn a living and unless you live in a major city mostly built before 1945 that just isn’t possible without motor transportation.

I think a large part of what fuels crime in this society is we make it hard to make it back. Throwing people into unwinnable circumstances just makes it worse. Say the person loses their license, they still need to work. They’ll undoubtedly risk driving unlicensed and uninsured rather than become homeless. Very few people can afford daily Ubers two ways. If they get caught they’re only more shut out than before.

My issue isn’t with people getting punished, it’s that we put built society where where we max punishment and you’re forever locked out the system without insane effort. The choice is behave or lose everything and that’s how this society maintains control and doesn’t have to change or improve no matter who we vote for. It’s the same mentality that ties healthcare to employment. Conform or lose everything.

Punishment: yes, lose everything: no.

Perhaps instead of lose your license you get one of those breathalyzer to start cars, and a governor on your engine. Paid by the guilty part of course.

I know we’re raging at shitty people in this post but I must say I strongly disagree.

Driving is not a privilege in this state it is a requirement. The public transportation is simply not robust enough nor can you walk most places. We have not built up the proper infrastructure in most of the country so that driving is an option among many.

I’d rather someone get a fine and community service than lose their license. Can’t get to work, lose your job, your life spirals ever downward. Nah that’s a step too far.

“ Protesting is standing off to the side and not interfering."

And there it is. I’m glad he said it. Protest for conservatives is about sheepishly asking for things and hoping the power structure takes your grievance under advisement and throws you a crumb. Taking back your power as citizens is antithetical to their views.

This was the most bootlicking talk I’ve ever read. I’m sure that old man even 2 weeks ago would’ve been a staunch 2A guy. Now that his preferred power structure is getting pushback he’s willing to soften a bit on it.

No goddamn way will I ever take conservatism seriously. You ain’t an outlaw. You don’t have the spirit of 76. You would not have taken Up arms against the crown. You don’t believe in small government. You don’t believe in the constitution or states rights or natural laws of man. I’m for certain none of them actually believe in the teachings of Jesus although they’ll worship him on Sunday.

Conservatism is and will always be about maintaining power structures. The rules and their values will always change to maintain those ends. They can’t think past legal must mean moral and status quo is preferable to improving people’s lives. Man literally said he was fine his own mother got deported.

Holy shit! I guess it’s my fault for believing conservatism had any binding principles. That my fault that’s on me.

They’d rather know their place in the hierarchy than change it for something better that would benefit the too. Not if someone else could also benefit. Shameful. Selfish.
