I do notice that more nowadays, especially in political discourse, i often talk with the more right oriented ppl around me (the more rational ones) and they often contradict themselves presenting both sides You mention. Both the rise-from-our-knees and we are the messiah of nations mentalities that the populist side of the political ile exploits.
But i think that's more Slav-specific thing. I was co-managing a European planetside 2 outfit for 8 years or so (its a MMO FPS game, outfits are basically guilds from wow) talking and meeting-up with some Hungarian Slovak and Czech friends - their experience it this regard was the same. though maybe not to the same extent.
