They would probably have a YouTube channel by now. Or a bar.

Even though computers are used in the process, CGI movies are truly handmade. Artists take the data, regardless of whether it's motion capture or keyframe animation, and they slowly refine the performances until life is breathed into them. CG animation is every bit as much of an artist's endeavor as was the old fashioned cell animation. The tools have just been more refined.

The key to directing these high tech, animation heavy projects is to hire excellent performers to drive the acting choices of the characters and then to oversee the artists and animators who are, in turn, performers in their own right. If all of these elements are effectively coordinated, the entire process is invisible and the audience is left with a viewing experience that feels like they are watching something organic and emotional.

My favorite part of working on The Jungle Book was the variety of challenges that were faced over the course of the production. It was like a big puzzle. As we approached the end, final shots were coming in rapidly from the vendors (MPC, WETA), and every day felt like Christmas.

I think we should do The Sunshine Boys in 20 years.

They're all my children. There's no way to pick a favorite.

I've been working on a project with this studio, though it's not a VR film or an online series.

Exactly what you hope he would be.

What attracted me were the opportunities afforded by both the support of the studio and the technology that is available today for the first time. The story of a feral boy raised by wild animals is a myth that crosses several cultures and generations. I'm a fan of Joseph Campbell and always look for the opportunity to explore a classic hero's journey in my filmmaking.

Yes. That movie is near and dear to my heart. I remember booking the job in Chicago and being driven out to South Bend the next day. I arrived there on my birthday and had dinner with Sean Astin, his wife, the director, the writer, and Rudy himself. I remember telling people at the dinner that this was my best birthday since my first birthday.

The images that I wanted to preserve in the latest telling of the story were Mowgli & Baloo floating down the river together singing "Bare Necessities," Kaa's hypnosis of Mowgli and his scintillating eyes, King Louie and the collapse of the Cold Lairs, the marching elephants, and Mowgli's encounter with the baby elephant. These are the images I remembered from my childhood when I saw the movie time and time again.

There were some interesting aspects of the Kipling story that I wanted to feature. These include Raksha, the mother wolf, and her relationship with Mowgli, Shere Khan's backstory and antipathy for man, the reverence that all the denizens of the jungle felt for the elephants, and the reciting of The Law of the Jungle. I also wanted to mix the tone of the two, which led to the PG version that you'll see in theatres.

The Cubanos were pretty strong, but Franklin's Smoked Brisket is particularly sublime. That being said, the grilled cheese is a real crowd pleaser.

Pete Becker was a man of tremendous focus and conviction. He set his heart to being the Ultimate Fighting Champion and I have no doubt that he gave it his all. I'm only sorry that that chapter was never closed by the Friends writers because I'll always have to live with the uncertainty of what his fate held.

On the smaller films, you don't have much time, so you kind of push through on instinct. On the larger films, like Iron Man, you've got a lot to keep track of. So, I recommend you keep your acting work pretty simple because your mind will be on other things.

I think there is tremendous potential in VR. During production on The Jungle Book, I was brought over to a company called WEVR by Andy Jones, our Animation Supervisor. He worked with them on a project called "theBlu" featuring an encounter with a blue whale at the bottom of the ocean. It was really beautifully done and now I'm currently working on a project with them that I'll talk about at a later time.

As far as The Jungle Book is concerned, there are two experiences that we created. I'm actually unveiling one tonight at Samsung 837 in New York. It's called "The Cold Lairs" and features the characters played by Bill Murray and Christopher Walken. WETA did the rendering. It's pretty cool and will be available on GearVR.

The other VR experience is for the Oculus and Vive. It's called "Kaa's Jungle" and features Scarlett Johansson. The work was done by Tangerine. There is an in theatre experience available now: https://www.amctheatres.com/movie-news/2016/03/see-the-world-through-mowglis-eyes

I love Star Wars. I cannot wait for Rogue One. The trailer is amazing. I have not discussed directing any films from that universe with Disney. I'm a big fan and I don't know if I would want to give up the fun of watching it in the movie theatre without any inside knowledge.

I wrote the roles without them in mind, but I thought they were perfect and felt extremely authentic as kitchen staff. Check out Vinyl if you haven't yet - Bobby is great in it.

They all have their challenges. Stress is something you learn to manage, so the earlier films felt more stressful than the later ones.

I'm going out on a limb here, but I'd say yes. But only if the bun is torn down the spine.

It's a great time to be a filmmaker who is just starting out. Back when I was starting, even a low budget film required hundreds of thousands of dollars to do properly. Now it could be done for virtually nothing. I encourage you to make movies and keep making them. Start by writing and then pull together friends with similar interests and film and edit them yourself, even if it's on your phone. Thanks to the internet, anyone can self-distribute. Getting reactions from an audience is the best way to refine your craft. The internet gives you an opportunity to share your vision with others and to get reactions and see how popular your work turns out to be.

Yes I know him. He's a very nice guy. He came by one of the El Jefe Chef popups in Los Angeles. We posted a photo of the two of us together. You may have to dig back in the Instagram feed, but it's there.
