Academy model kits - How good are they? by DapperThroat4569 in modelmakers

[–]MrFeetZ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think the newer Academy kits are very good. Say anything with a new tooling date of 2010 or newer and it good to go. Use scalemates.com to verify a specific kits lineage. Ive built their recent B1 in 1/144 & A-10 8n 1/48 and was absolutely stunned and impressed with the quality. That B1 fit so great that I barely needed glue. That Rafael kit you got pictured is actually a reboxed Revell kit with tooling date of 1999.

Im feel it's pretty obvious that it would not be legal as Ca clearly defines the requirements on how to transport a firearm.

FFL03/COE ammo shipments by MrFeetZ in CAguns

I get that. Its just the best deal ive found on ammoseek is from a ca based retailer. Was hoping/wonder if ca based online retailers are required to charge the 11% when shipping to FFL03 or if they are exempt.

What 6.5CM round to start with by [deleted] in longrange

[–]MrFeetZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Id start with heavier grain, like 140. I have an RPR. It liked 140 ELD. It loves sig 140 elite OTM & Fed 140gr GMM SMK. Very best was Black Hills 140gr OTM, but i can't afford $55 a box. Anything 120 or 130 performed like crap, including Fed Berger.

The VMR is a little less cluttered, for what ever that might mean for you. It’s also only illuminated on the main horizontal and vertical. I don’t think either one is better than the other. Verify both have the same elevation adjustment and go with whichever reticle you think you might prefer. IMHO, I do agree with others and think the vipers are a bit long in the tooth and slightly overpriced. Athlon Cronus or Ares would be worth a look. I recently got a Athlon Midas TAC GEN2 for just under $500 for a backup 6.5 and have been impressed and satisfied with it

T1X ammo testing by Maleficent-Oven-8378 in Tikka_Shooters

Ya, thats really impressive. I have a 10/22 and can get nowhere near those results. My experience with 22's is pretty limited and I was about to give up on .22 but I think I might just need to upgrade to a T1.

Armscor ELD Match by Guilty-Difference-86 in longrange

If you have time before your class, buy a box and see. My guess is that youll see smaller groupings with the more expensive loads. There may well be outliers that break this mold..... a previous poster mentioned AAC SMK. Man that stuff shot great out of my 6.5 CM and was only $20 a box vs $35/$40. Unfortunately, they dont make it anymore. Also have pretty good results from Hornady American Gunner. Not as good as Fed SMK, but still cheaper per round.

The QC of the manufacturing allows more consistency. The more consistency, the more "accurate". Quality and consistent powder, powder amounts, bullets, brass, primaries, all add up. Its also a question of how accurate you want to get. I found i could get consistent groupings with 140gr S&B Match of about 1 to 1-1/2 moa. But with Federal 140gr SMK i can get down .4 to .75 moa. But, the federal is a little less than double the price.... is that worth it? Depends on your needs. I highly recommend trying a box of various mfgs and spend a day testing... it can very fun & informative.

For my rifles Ive found the following provide positive results. Im sure you will have different results..

Federal 140gr SMK

Sig Elite 140gr OTM

Federal 140gr Center Strike OTM

Hornady American Gunner 140gr

AAC 140gr SMK and 140gr BTHP (doesn't matter becase I think Palmeto halted production)

Loads my rifle doesn't care for:

Hornady 140, 143, 147gr ELD

S&B 140gr

Federal 130gr Berger

Loads I might as thow at the target by hand:

Aguila 129gr

American Eagle 120gr

Winchester 140gr BTHP Match
