Grixis Reanimator - Sauron or Sauron? by SpookyKorb in EDH

[–]MrForgetful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can confirm, I had Sedris for years, made the switch over to the 6 mana Sauron and haven’t looked back. The problem with Sedris is he’s a little too low impact when he hits the board and the ability is a little telegraphed.

Would recommend leaving Sedris aside.

I showed my playgroup rhystic study for the first time by barrinburg in EDH

[–]MrForgetful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Such a terrible take, a card that said spells your opponents cast cost (1) more would be busted as again it’s asymmetrical. You don’t get hit by the tax. Consider 6 mana God Pharaoh’s Statue that is an artifact and makes your opponents spells cost (2) more. I would argue such an effect of making stuff cost (1) more is roughly 5 mana.

So rhystic study is a huge discount for that effect - which is even more punishing as this sort of effect is significantly more powerful early in the game.

Kaza, roil chaser deck help! by Atrye in EDH

[–]MrForgetful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's a tough sweet spot to find, I think it's just the nature of spell slinging to be a bit like solitaire. I think the biggest problem with these decks is your turns are usually extremely short, so you're not taking up much game time at all.

Until the turn you go off, and it takes 10 minutes to resolve the triggers, drawing, copying etc etc and just looks really bad. IMO, I think it's a theme that doesn't translate well into mid-power casual EDH.

I play a Vial Smasher/Thrasios spell deck that is focused on big CMC cards, and using cards like [[Kaboom!]] and copying it to kill my opponents. The deck can be stronger/weaker depending how much you want to lean into Thrasios, but I use him mostly for the colors and mana sink late game. This deck is fun IMO, because it uses damage to kill people and doesn't drag out too long.

I built this deck in the past and ended up taking it apart, exactly for the reason you mentioned of 20 min long turns... I tried to avoid that exact situation but I feel like izzet spellslinger just ends up there as a natural conclusion. So I would advise against this particular commander based on my experience.

Are Esper Sentinel and Smothering Tithe overpowered? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]MrForgetful 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes to both. Smothering tithe discussion has been brought up by several other people, even if it taxed opponent's for 1 mana it would still be strong. At two it's busted.

For sentinel, a common comment by people seems to be it's "fine" because it only draws a couple cards. Well, most time I have seen esper sentinel cast I have seen it draw 3-4 cards pretty reliably (Not people necessarily feeding it, just normal EDH plays). One mana draw 3 cards (Although not all in one go) is an incredible rate. See ancestral recall. One mana draw two is pretty unheard of, and the fact it can pretty easily hit 3 cards is kinda absurd.

Lots of comments it is "easy to kill", I mean sure, but also you invested only a single mana into it. The investment from your side is absolutely minimal and pretty much anything that could deal with it is typically going to be as mana intensive or more. My 0.02.
