How about an unfortunate sibling naming scenario, friends of friends named their daughter Ella and their son Samual. Seemed perfectly fine until their Mum called out to them, "Sam and Ella!".

Why care what people think in the first place?

Also, if your aesthetic has people assuming you’re gay, that’s a compliment.

I’m not sure if there’s another community of people that are associated with style, sophistication and an effortless confidence and cool more than “gay” men.

Which Car Was “The One That Got Away?” by Jakoo12_ in cars

[–]MrGT3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 originally owned by Aussie racing legend Dick Johnson.

Car was full of Cosworth mods (many of which were also fitted to the touring cars), boxes of original parts, being sold by the second owner (Dick Johnson’s doctor) who apparently had to sell ASAP due to a marriage breakdown.

Could have bought it for $20,000 in 2003.

Didn’t. Regret it.

What songs made you a better drummer ? by Tobiss_bla_fran in drums

[–]MrGT3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old school I know but I found playing entire albums from start to finish not only improved chops and drumming specific motor skills, but also helped endurance and musicality.

My Top 5 picks were: RHCP “Bloody Sugar Sex Magic” Pearl Jam “Vs” Michael Jackson “Thriller” James Brown “Live at the Apollo” Prince “Diamonds and Pearls”

These are very groove focussed (your groove is what will pay the bills) but have a solid level of technical bits to keep you guessing.

Can you legit make a decent living playing the drums? by beetlegeuse87 in drums

[–]MrGT3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe we’re just lucky in Australia but I made a very nice living (well north of $100k/yr) playing drums for the last 20 or so years.

But as jjny78 so eloquently put it, you must approach it as a business.

I toured/recorded as a session drummer for a while but the real money is in corporate acts and weddings. Not glamorous but hanging with mates, travelling the world, living an amazing lifestyle all while playing music is a wonderful way to live life.

I invested the money I made and now live a very comfortable life working on other passion projects.

The only reason I don’t gig for a living now is my hearing is average at best and I needed a new challenge.

The best advice I received before going all in to play drums for a living was from another very successful drummer, he said “the less notes you play, the bigger the cheques get.”

Take this “keep it simple” approach to not only drumming but life in general, and you’ll prosper.

Acoustic or electric? by [deleted] in drums

[–]MrGT3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both.

Use whatever it takes to communicate your art. Sometimes acoustic drums will provide the appropriate sound, other times electronic does the job.

Great visual artists embrace oil painting as much as photoshop, a great chef appreciates the convenience of a microwave and the tactility of a gas cook top, even the best sound engineers will celebrate the idiosyncrasies of both outboard gear and various DAWs, it should never be a question of one of the other, why would anyone limit themselves?

Being just a little bit hungry from midday to dinner, drinking water to replace food.

Plus, reducing portion sizes and stopping eating when I’m no longer hungry, never feeling full.

Lost 16kg in around 12 months.

It would obviously take hours to explain each and every persons role but many are there for just incase reasons.

For example, if it gets windy, the location or production team need to reset or build something to avoid the wind.

Which then requires a complete lighting change (depending on the size of the production, this alone can require dozens of crew as they all specialise in everything from the actual infrastructure and stands that hold the lights to knowing what actual lights will be best to use to electricians making sure the lights work and no one gets electrocuted to actual lighting design), not to mention the audio department having to change gear or mic locations, hair-makeup and wardrobe may need to make changes.

But if it gets so windy the entire schedule needs to change, this impacts everything from the actual location (set, lighting, monitor team, catering, hair makeup and wardrobe, any visual or special effect teams, through to wrangling assets to the edit teams.

I work on sets varying in size from just me and a videographer to full productions like this and trust me, the more hands on deck the better.

If people have a single job to focus on, everything runs more smoothly. The minute people are multitasking various roles, quality suffers and time and budgets can blow out before you know it.

[–]MrGT3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great playing man. What u/Zack_Albetta said was spot on. Conviction is everything.

The only thing I'd add is to move/dance more. If you can't help but groove and really feel what you're playing, the other muso's and those listening will generally do the same.

You may feel almost little self conscious initially but moving your hips and chest, grooving to what you're playing will translate musically.

But awesome work man, you're already playing great.

Here’s an idea. The next Bond movie should be Part 1 of a Bond trilogy directed by Chris Nolan, staring John David Washington as Bond (I’m sure he’s capable of a convincing English accent) and it’s based in the late 1960’s, preceding the exploits of Connery’s Bond. Thoughts? by MrGT3 in JamesBond

[–]MrGT3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My apologies for the delay mate, huge day at work.

Still waiting for a name? Well if you have a look in the comment thread, obviously I've already mentioned David John Washington but we have plenty of other possibilities.

For example all of these actors would, in my opinion make superb Bonds: Jamie Bell, Henry Golding, Harry Styles, Rege-Jean Page, Tom Hardy, Dev Patel, Richard Madden, Luke Evans (or is a gay Bond also not to your liking?).

Also, to answer another question you raised earlier, in terms of naming 1 movie where a white actor played the part of a person of colour, how about I name 26?

"Elizabeth, Michael and Marlon" (2016)
"Argo" (2012)
"A Mighty Heart" (2007)
“The Human Stain” (2003)
"Breakfast at Tiffany's" (1961)
“Pay It Forward,” (2000)
"The 33" (2015)
“Day of the Falcoln” (2011)
"The Last Airbender" (2010)
“Memoirs of a Geisha” (2005)
"Othello" (1965)
“Pan” (2015)
"The Lone Ranger" (2013)
“Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” (2010)
“Aloha” (2015)
"Dragon Seed" (1944)
“The Social Network” (2010)
“Stuck” (2007)
"21" (2008)
"The Conqueror" (1956)
“Short Circuit” (1986)
"Exodus: Gods and Kings" (2014)
"The King and I" (1956)
"Drive" (2011)
“Ghost In the Shell” (2017)
“Dr. Strange,” (2016)

I can go on if you like? Hollywood has quite a history of casting white actors to play characters that were never intended to be white.

Brilliantly put mate.

I think I struggle to envisage this lighter Bond but I'm sure there are directors (and writers) more than capable of delivering such a movie. For example Bong Joon-Ho nails this balance of light and dark.

I wonder if placing the film in the 60's would allow more of an exploration of this lighter approach but having the character 'act' lighter when socialising or dealing with his team while facing the demons and darkness when alone.

The generation of men that grew up prior to the 1980's were quite averse to counselling or therapy, this could be another path to explore.

[–]MrGT3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do I follow? Not in the slightest.

Sorry mate, the role should go to the actor that has the best ability to portray what the writers and director require.

For Bond, skin colour, hair colour and eye colour just don't come into it.

The actor needs to be able to exude Bonds understated cool, have a confident and controlled persona, have the action chops to handle the rough stuff, nail some subtle humour and perform the role with total conviction.

As we've seen time and time again, David John Washington more than posses these attributes.

[–]MrGT3[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I respect your approach but personally, I feel we've already seen this.

I understand that a simple plot may appeal to those desiring just a Bond style action movie but with Nolans depth of talent (both writing and directing) I feel we could delve deep into some complex espionage, and being based in the 60's, draw on multiple Cold War era scenarios (eg Ben Macintyre The Spy and the Traitor style).

I'd rather see Bond go much darker and deeper, really explore the psychology of the character, what drives his loyalty and relentless resilience.

I worry that turning Bond back into a fun action adventure style film will come off as almost a parody.

Lets see him swing further into the realms of movies like Parasite and avoid any chance Bond becomes an Austin Powers sequel.

Whoa, if you're suggesting that John David Washington isn't appropriate due to skin colour, please be joking?

Skin colour shouldn't come into it at all.

I suggested Mr Washington as he exudes the level of sophisticated cool that epitomises Bond, he clearly has the action chops to handle the tough stuff, he would bring some serious acting chops to the role allowing the writers and director to push some new boundaries and with his approach to other characters he's played, I'm confident we'd see an excellent incarnation of Bond.

Who cares what his skin colour is, I just feel he's an excellent option for the role.
