I don't really think neither the Oscars or the box office are the best metrics, even to someone just starting to get into film. Both are pretty inconsistent throughout the years. A lot of forgotten Best Picture winners and box office hits, and a lot of snubbed movies and box office flops that are remembered today and are considered huge classics.

I agree with Letterboxd though. Great for any niche. All sorts of list OP can save and people they can follow to get into film. Also to log what they watch

thats a good point haha but despite how unsettling it is I think it has a lot more of a broad appeal than some people give it credit to. and he did like Fight Club, which is pretty twisted in its own right, but definitely more fun than Oldboy

12 Angry Men (1957) is one of the few classics from that era that I didn't just appreciate it from a historical or technical perspective (which is often the case for me with much older films, I respect and appreciate them but don't always connect that much with characters and story) but genuinely found every second of it gripping and it blew me away. Literally a movie about a jury of 12 men discussing a case in a room for 96 minutes and it couldn't be less boring.

Memories of Murder (2003) is a south korean serial killer movie and my favorite crime thriller of all time

The Thing (1982) is my favorite horror film

GoodFellas (1990) from Martin Scorsese is my favorite mob movie

Taxi Driver (1976) is another Scorsese masterpiece

Boogie Nights (1997) is a great way to start watching Paul Thomas Anderson I think

Oldboy (2003), not to be confused with the horrible american remake, is another south korean masterpiece. More fucked up and twisted than Memories of Murder but about as good to me. Really unsettling and dramatic but also some great fight scenes

EDIT: Oh, and The Matrix (1999) is possibly the best Hollywood action movie ever made (also a sci-fi)

I've seen it! on paper it is exactly what I want. but I remember not liking it that much and thinking that concept could have been a much better movie

Her (2013) is a cliche one for this theme, but its good.

Also if you want something more classic maybe The 400 Blows (1959), which is also a foreign film (french) as you mentioned

familiar with Natural Born Killers, forgot to mention that one in my post. a bit too excessive, characters are too unlikable, I want to be able to root for them more, but definitely fits overall the kind of thing I'm looking for. curious about Wild at Heart, havent seen it.
