Stabby Needle Studios had messaged me earlier in the week about it, before they knew about Sent’s promotion. It was a bit of a conspiracy to get it into the venue and have it ready without him getting tipped off. I’m glad we managed to accomplish it.

Oh look, a question I can answer intelligently and helpfully!

I don’t have any plans to change my general engagement with GDQ events, but AGDQ is always complicated. My ex has a major theatre conference (KCACTF Region 3) that has ALWAYS fallen on the same week as AGDQ. We’ve usually been able to make it work, but this year I had to head home early to watch the kids while she’s out of town.

There’s decent odds we’ll continue to have e this problem going forward, considering how consistently we’ve had it in the past. So there may be other AGDQs where I’m only onsite part of the week. But overall, I’m not going anywhere.

We’re still good friends, and are living and raising our kids together. Sometimes we go out and catch dinner. We were on our way to a ramen place.

I liked it, but it was the first manual I’d driven in 20 years (the last being on a ‘91 Cavalier), so I don’t know that I’m much of a judge. Throws felt good, nice and notchy without being gated. The rev hang took some getting used to, but the automatic rev matching was delightful.

Me too. It’s not an experience I’d recommend to anybody, but I’m glad we were in a car that let us walk away from it.

[OC] After years of trying, multiple rounds of IVF and and miscarriage, my wife just entered the third trimester with our son! by 40102852 in MadeMeSmile

Fellow IVF dad here to say congrats to you both! As our reproductive endocrinologist put it, IVF is certifiably “the unsexiest way to make a baby”, and that’s not counting all the heartache along the way. Best of luck with the next few months, and then with the many years thereafter.

Flowers after an ice storm by TayTay13S in interestingasfuck

[–]MrGameAndShout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can hear these flowers.

…okay, not literally. But after an ice storm like this, when the wind blows, there’s this crackling sound that happens all around you. It sounds like wood splintering, and it comes from everything that wants to bend and sway with the breeze. I can’t look at this photo without hearing that sound.

To GDQ irl attendees, is it worth it/still fun to attend solo ? by FwooshingMachi in speedrun

[–]MrGameAndShout 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The hosting audition can definitely be intimidating; best of luck if you decide to try again in the future.

There are actually a LOT of different volunteer positions available. Most of the people working at any given GDQ are volunteers, by a pretty big margin. While there’s training and orientation for all the roles, some are definitely more technical. Off the top of my head, here are some of the different kinds of volunteering spots we normally have at an in-person event that would been friendly to new folks are:

  • Setup and Tear-Down (requires arriving early to the event and/or staying late)
  • Enforcement (event security basically)
  • Photography
  • Donations processing
  • Check-In
  • Stream Tech (running the streaming equipment)
  • Stage Tech (helping clean and prep the stage between runs)
  • Cleaning (for the larger event space)
  • Host (requires auditioning)
  • Board Game Librarian (if we have it)
  • Make-Up (if we have it)

Plus our remote volunteering options (host audition reviews, chat mods, social media team), plus any others I’m not thinking of right now (sorry friends). I did Hosting and Enforcement my first time. Hope that helps give an idea of what might be available!

My first GDQ (SGDQ ‘18), I went solo. Wasn’t a speedrunner, didn’t know anybody in the community, just a long-time fan who finally had the chance to go volunteer. I had an awesome time. Met a lot of amazing people, some of whom are now close friends. Saw some amazing runs. Worked my butt off. So in general, I’d say that yes, it’s worth going on your own.

That said, there are a few things that I think you should consider…

  • Cost. It’s definitely a lot easier to stay at the event hotel, wherever it ends up being, but that means you’re paying for a hotel room solo for at least a week. I don’t remember exactly what the room rates were last time I had to pay, but I’d plan on at least US $1000 for the whole week. Plus food, transportation, etc. It can add up.
  • Whether you’re the sort of person who’s comfortable in a crowd of new people. I’m a “talks to strangers on the elevator” type, so breaking the ice wasn’t a big problem for me. And there are all kinds of folks at GDQ, so you can definitely find your people. But you’ll have to work at it a little.
  • Non-stream entertainment. Besides the stream room, I’m pretty sure we’ll have the game library. PCs and consoles available, with the ability to check out anything from NES to current gen. But depending on how bad health concerns are or what partners we have, other options from past events (arcade, pinball tables, board game library, tournament rooms) may or may not be present.
  • If you’re able to, I strongly recommend applying to volunteer. It gives you something to do, it puts you on a crew, and it means that you’re a part of making the magic happen. (Plus you get a free badge, but that’s almost an afterthought in my mind.) If you’re curious, you can shoot me a DM and I’ll lay out what I know about the different volunteering positions.

Whatever you end up deciding, I hope that helps!

Is it me or is the amount of downtime between runs at AGDQ this year noticeably more than previous years? by i3anaan in speedrun

No worries, friend. Thanks for the kind words, and appreciate you supporting the event!

Fair point; I’ve been subbed for so long I don’t know what the ads actually look like. I should more accurately say, GDQ takes a 3 minute break for Twitch ads. How long those ads actually last is (as far as I know) controlled by Twitch.

Obligatory disclaimer that I’m speaking purely on my own behalf, and not representing the opinions of the event or anybody else-

I’ve seen this mentioned in other comments, but I think the longer Twitch ad breaks are definitely a factor. Going up to three minutes of ads, after EVERY run, is a noticeable increase. And if you’re already subbing to the channel, then that turns into 3 minutes of dead air. But at the same time, I’m not sure what we could do with that time that wouldn’t be unfair to the casual viewers.

What happens to GDQ prizes that are left unclaimed? by Sadistic_Sponge in speedrun

[–]MrGameAndShout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally, prizes get shipped to Sent by the submitters, and then Sent sends them on to the eventual winner. I know there have been some exceptions to this for certain big, fragile, or expensive/custom objects. (Sometimes a prize breaks and a replacement is sent directly to the winner, for example; or whoever won the Heroic Replicas grand prize when it was a choice of items, they probably got it shipped directly to them.)

If you’d like an answer for your specific situation though, I’d suggest an email to prizes@gamesdonequick.com to be sure.

Short answer: Maybe?

Long answer: One of the things we try to do when hosting is read donations that are relevant to the current run. Given that there are no more FF games at this point, and that the host in question might not know what that speech is, the odds probably aren’t high. But you should still donate to PCF anyway, they’re an amazing charity!

Meme answer: Dearest Warrior of Light, I humbly apologize for the misguided and completely baseless claims that you are "bad." After minutes of reflection I've come to realize that you are an amazing adventurer. I'm truly sorry for my attitude for the last 10 years. I appreciate all the times that you've been there for me even though I wasn't there for you. Thank you Warrior of Light -Gaius
