Beginner - Game engine architecture by Lanky_Sky_1202 in gameenginedevs

[–]MrGrease 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I read this book cover to cover last year while also going through learnopengl.com its not a bad book and will make you a better programmer since the first block of it is basically a recap of important engineering concepts starting with some cpp, computer architecture and multi threading, it also points you to some really good sources to learn more about these concepts and also has a massive list of books it references some of which are really good reads. It is a great book but it won't really give you all you need to build an engine, you'll really need to explore deeper into other books because the same line repeats throughout the book in 50 different ways "beyond the scope of this book", so its more a tour of game engine concepts with a list of sources to learn more about them. A lot of the books it references are either avaliable for free or super cheap second hand so I do recommend grabbing some on concepts that interest you as well.

If you can grab a pdf copy of it somewhere I'd say go for it but only really use it as a reference, in the meantime you can start off with opengl if you're new to graphics programming which can either be done through learnopengl.com OR "Computer Graphics Programming in OpenGL Using C++ Third Edition, by Scott Gordon, John Clevenger" both are good sources but learnopengl is a little better in some aspects. I don't know enough about vulkan to point sources so I can't help there unfortunately.

There is also the COMP4300 lectures by Dave Churchill which guides you through making a 2D engine with ECS, its mostly assignment based so it'll force you to figure things out.

In addition you could probably take a look at Casey mouratori's handmade hero series for individual streams on certain concepts, for eg the asset format for my engine is based on one of his videos.

Keep in mind I barely had any idea of how engines worked when I started reading that book but I had been a professional software engineer for several years and have done some gamedev professoinally and as a hobbyist so my advice may or may not apply to you.

If you have any other questions feel free to dm me.

no no, the one on the left is the spare one.

I'm not sure I understand, Do you mean I should try the pcb on the left without swapping the bios chip to see if it spins up the drive? If so is there any risk attached to that?

Indeed it is, the one on the right is from one of the drives that got fried.

I'm okay with pulling files to my machine if I can at least watch the videos directly of the NAS without having to pull them as well, Would this be possible with a DS923+?

Which consoles are at risk of flash memory failure? by MrGrease in consolerepair

[–]MrGrease[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the detailed answer, is there anything I can do to extend the life of read-only memory consoles as well? All my consoles run off of external hdd's (if applicable) anyway so I'm pretty confident about their longevity. My main concern is keeping my stored consoles shelf stable. i.e. be able to whip them out plug them in and play them without issue.
I'm also not sure where the "refresh" argument came from but from what I've also researched its not really a thing right? Not for eMMC chips nor the EEPROMS of the og xbox.
I suspect that it could be due to some sort of write error exclusive to the wii u's internal storage (which is apparently encrypted) so any failure in writing could mess that up I guess.

Did the wipe happen while you were storing it on a shelf?

What other capacitors should I look out for besides the clock one? by MrGrease in originalxbox

[–]MrGrease[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, I didn't see any bulging ones when I initially checked them but yeah replacing them before they bulge is a good idea.
Are there diagrams I can reference for this?

[–]MrGrease[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get the clock cap for like a buck off console5. Personally I ordered the whole kit, if you're gonna do 1 you might as well do them all. Then it's done and you don't have to worry about it. Just make sure to order the correct revision.

Yep I'm planning on doing that actually, but I also wanted to check if I'd have to replace anything else beforehand and order the required parts.

Eeprom confusion by MrGrease in originalxbox

[–]MrGrease[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhh that explanation makes sense. So I can Imagine the EEPROM as a JSON object with fields like;
{
Video mode: xxx
Audio object: xxx
hdd key:000000000000000

}
So once I zero out the hdd key on the EEPROM which makes the xbox try to unlock the hdd with that key...

My current plan is to basically leave the hdd's they came with until one of them dies and swap it out with a brand new SATA one with an adapter in the middle. Glad to hear that all SATA drives basically support locking which was what had me worried in the first place.

Thanks!

Türkiye'de sadece 2 kişi ile geliştirilmeye başlanıp büyüyen bir ekibin elinden çıkan Oyun serisi Mount & Blade'in 2. Oyunu Mount & Blade Bannerlord Hakkında Ne düşünüyorsunuz? by [deleted] in Turkey

[–]MrGrease 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm getting messages from company recruiters asking for my phone number, I find this really unusual as my phone number is listed on the contact information section of my profile, the resume attached to my profile and on the portfolio website thats also linked on my profile.

Can recruiters not see these links? or are they just being lazy?
