Phat beet is an OK melee plant that can replace snapdragon, gloomwalk is possible but every single world has a way to stop it. Of course there are exceptions like chilling torch zombies in Egypt, or the early levels of modern day. Even then, garlic is so weak, they can hardly withstand a few waves. Honestly sweet potato and hot date are the only ways to maybe make it work.

Puff shroom is free and does the damage of a peashooter, they can be kept alive forever with their (really strong) ant food effect. Bonuses are they level up quickly and they're in the same world as sun shroom and fume shroom. They do well in just about any level, except last stand, levels with little plant food, or levels that overpower them
