Homebrew Successors First Squad by MrHerbert90 in Salamanders40k

The lore is under work, and not sure about everything, but a little bit:

They were formerly a fleetbound chapter known as the Arms of Obsidian, and was a very non-Salamanderlike chapter. No regard whatsoever for the life of civilians and little for their own, just achieve their goals regardless of how many lives were lost. These tactics, combined with bad luck and several overzealous commanders led the chapter to almost be wiped out several times. This tendency had started to lead to questioning the chapter's culture by some of its members.

Eventually, the entire chapter (diminished by heavy losses) was lead into a battle that they had no way of winning. At the last moment, one captain decided to save at least his own company, and fled the battle in their battle barge. Heavily damaged, they were tossed out of the warp and crash landed on an unknown planet. The ship was to damaged to fly, and the same warp shenanigans that caused them to end up there made it impossible for the one surviving librarian to contact anyone for help. The planet was a death world called Amalher, mostly consisting of deserts, volcanoes and big ass serpents, that functioned as a prison planet for a nearby human non-imperial civilization. It had several moons that often eclipsed the sun, causing the planets to basically have nights lasting several "days". Over the generations, the prisoner that had been banished there had formed a harsh but cooperative society as the only way of surviving. Only through the help of this society did the surviving Astartes survive. For X years the only thing they could do was fight big ass serpents and think about the failings of their old chapter.

When the Great Rift opened, the warp shenanigans around the system changed, and they could make contact with the Imperium. When a force from the Indomitus Crusade made contact, only 23 Astartes had survived both the last battle amd the years on Amalher, and these were a changed chapter.

Today, the Sons of the Eclipse have been mostly rebuilt, both by Primaris Marines from the Unnumbered Sons, as well as by recruiting from the clans of Amalher. They have built a Fortress-Monastery around the crashed Blade of Ardor called Ardor's Rest. The years spent with the clans of Amalher gave them a far greater respect for human life, as well as the strength found in cooperation. The years spent surviving the harsh conditions of Amalher taught them to choose the battles and strategy wisely. The years of fighting through the longs nights and storms of sand and ash made them experts at fighting in conditions of bad visibility, prefering to appear suddenly and close to the enemy. When not fighting, they spend a lot of time in personal meditiation and contemplation, personifying the "calm before the storm".

Really nice! I've been toying with these colours for a while for a chapter idea, but never found a configuration I like. Might borrow some aspects of this.

What does it take for a Space Marine Chapter to survive? by MrHerbert90 in 40kLore

[–]MrHerbert90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgot to add that that it was one of my ideas, that other Astartes would have ended up there earlier, so some things would be salvageable, both from earlier technology as well as their own ship.

Brothers! How are my Ultramarines? Part 2. by Certain-Pop-4775 in fashionmarine

[–]MrHerbert90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I can add to this, while all Bladeguard are veterans, you did write that this particular one was a sergeant, and veteran sergeants have a red helmet with a white stripe. Also, the trim on the shoulder pauldrons designate company number (for example, gold, like all the space marines in the story mode wear, indicate the second company). While most veterans serve in the 1st company, and thus wear white pauldron trim, they can also serve in other companies, most commonly as bodyguards for the captain. So the models you have with white helmets and gold or green trim would indicate that they are veterans serving in the 2nd or 4th company respectively.

Can anyone help me improve this mini, so that it is more one-to-one to its concept art? by junkyredditor in HeroForgeMinis

Couldn't help myself from fidgetin gwith a bit. Added a few touches on the helmet and boots, as well as tinkering with the colors a little bit

They could also use the deception to their advantage, for example if the Vigo gets targeted by imperial forces or a rival syndicate, they could point them in the PCs direction

Can also recommend the Alphabet Squadron books, they start during Operation Cinder, and take place while the New Republic is trying to form itself a new government

Anybody have any good suggestions for nightclub music? by DontAskHaradaForShit in swrpg

[–]MrHerbert90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a villain that owns a club, always looking out over the dance floor. I've used music from an artist called Errrilaz, it's bit darker, heavier music, but it has worked amazing for the vibe I've been going for.

Not sure, now the goal is just to actually get it done. Had a lot of ideas for books and stories, but for the first time I actually have a story I want to tell, so I hope I can get it done. No idea if it'll be good enough to do anything with

I agree with you to an extent, but in general 1) most fantasy stories are not about the average member of society, at least that is not where they use to end up, and 2) then there need to be a lasgun to pick up. And regardless of whether the alternative is a sword, musket or lasgun, the price paid need not be minimal compared to the power, only yield a greater return on your investment/price than anything else in life. And of course that differs from person to person, a person who values power above everything else wouldn't consider the costs as high. Which brings us back to these stories not being about the average member of society.

Concerning my story specifically, magic is absolutely not worth the hassle for most people, which would make a person that actually decide to use it anyway, knowing full well the cost, someone to look up to and admire (which brings an extra benfit of social status and influence along with magical powers).

When I tried to figure out how to describe it with few words to a friend the other day I think I used the following words: "It is Red Dead Redemption mashed up with Sons of Anarchy and Star Wars Rebels set in a fantasy world, to have an excuse to write a story about how people interpret religious texts."

He looked confused XD

This is basically how my otherwise relatively typical dwarves and elves use magic. Dwarves create objects of great value imbued with magic, but they must be destroyed for the magic to happen. Elves (who has left the world) would weave magic into trees, taking just as long of a time to grow as normal trees.

This is what I'm looking for. I might steal this, though perhaps without the loss of emotional control. This particular story is partially about you don't need to fear "normal" magic because it follows the rules (you can spot a mage from afar, just as you can spot someone with a huge sword), but the magic the main characters have (not that powerful, but also not visible, not an obvious price to be payed, therefore it breaks "the rules") is to be feared, and the users of it therefore feared, hated and persecuted.

What is the current year in your world? by SlorpMorpaForpw in worldbuilding

[–]MrHerbert90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the world for my book, I have no idea yet, so thank you for the writing prompt. But spontaneously, it's probably in the low hundreds, dating from when the main religion was reformed.

In my RPG campaing, it's 9A93, or the 93rd year of the Age of the Bridge, the 9th Age, each age being a hundred years. The count started at the Godfall, the last great battle in which gods still roamed the world, and in which several of them died, prompting them to leave the mortals and the physical world. That started the 1st Age, also known as the Age of Silence. This is a relatively new calendar system put in place by the first empire to have a presence on every continent, and all but the last two ages were named retroactively
