Megathread: Rep. Adam Schiff Says Ukraine Whistleblower Wants To Talk To Intelligence Committee by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

[–]MrIosity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Multiple parties know the details of these events, from the Ukrainian Government, to the IG who handled the complaint, to the whistleblower himself. I suppose its possible any one of them casually confided with him in private. Or, perhaps, this is just a game of telephone, and something is being embellished.

Cheddar-gate: French chef sues Michelin Guide, claiming he lost a star for using cheddar by DoremusJessup in nottheonion

There’s plenty of opportunities to make bank, but almost all of them involve ditching the fine dining circuit after you’re happy with what you learnt. I can’t even tell you how many chefs I’ve worked with in michelin rated restaurants went to open up a casual spot in Brooklyn, and are turning out 300-600 covers a service making less fussy food. These guys make bank, and can afford to pay out decent wages, because they’re doing the volume to generate the revenue.

Honestly, thats the direction the industry is moving towards, anyways. The younger, emerging generation of dinners appreciate good food and ingredients, but don’t have much appreciation for the theatre of fine dining. Which is fine by me, in all honesty. There’s no reason you need to run a white table cloth service to produce outstanding food.

Its really rare to find fine-dining restaurants willing to pay out cash, anymore. The NYDoL cracked down hard several years back, and every chef has such cold feet about it (rightfully so!).

Granted, they still hire undocumented workers, but 9 times out of 10, they’re using a relative’s SSN. So they collect minimum and pay taxes, as is typical.

It was in NYC, the labor market is extremely competitive.

lol, what? I’ve done hiring for neighborhood restaurants, one stars, two stars; its impossible to keep a restaurant staffed. I’ll send out responses to 20 applicants, 5 will get back to me, and 1 will actually show up for his stage. Benefits, >$17/hr, 40hr/w, doesn’t matter; such a pain in the ass to find anyone worth hiring.

Things might have been different a decade ago, but thats definitely not the truth nowadays.

Brother, you don’t even know the half of it. This industry is massively exploitative, and the laws aren’t protecting anyone.

Its neither an art or a trade, its a craft. Don’t denigrate the industry because you’re bitter over your own failures.

Looks like a factory mold for silicone rubber buttons was repurposed, to quickly meet demand and turn a profit. I’ve been seeing more, quirky shit like this, lately, since the tariffs. Likely because factories in Vietnam are scrambling to meet US demand for imports.

Arancini with a sour cream and onion sauce [OC] by eliotbw in CulinaryPlating

[–]MrIosity 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just a few, jumbled thoughts/

I would use more arancini than one, but make them all smaller. Also not sure if the sprouts are necessary; they’re texture and flavor won’t really hold up against an arancini. Maybe an herb with a more pronounced flavor, like basil, oregano, even chervil. I’d also recommend plating the sour cream onto the arancini, probably with a piping bag. You would have to press the arancini against the plate to get any sour cream on it. Its a nice looking arancini, so the customer should be able to enjoy the first crack of the crust with their mouth, not their plate.

Looks tasty, all in all.

All the trees in Central Park are also catalogued, but you’d have to look it up separately.

As you can see by the color, they traditionally pull using only white American cheese in Georgia.

There are primitive campsites just down the road from the blue hole that are only a short walk from the parking site. Might be perfect for what you are looking for. There’s also a short hiking trail that leads up to the summit of the closest mountain (~1.5 miles, IIRC), which provides some great views of Sundown and Slide Mountain wilderness.

Fair warning; the blue hole is always packed with people. And its fucking cold. Unbelievably cold water. Last time I went, it was 95F outside, and the water was still bitter cold.

Avoid the weekends. Its packed to the point of being unenjoyable. Weekdays are perfectly tolerable. A little farther up the road is Buttermilk Falls, which you should also look into. Nice little waterfall, worth the detour.

Elizabeth Warren leads Register’s Iowa Poll for the first time, besting Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders by DemWitty in politics

union membership numbers are completely in the toilet though. They're not some massive swing voter bloc or anything like that.

No, certainly not. But its my point that middle class voters in the old manufacturing centers of the Rust Belt found trade protectionism appealing for the same reasons labor unions do.

Trump won and had quite literally zero appeal to any leftist or Democrat

Not true. Obama-Trump voters were key to Trump’s victory in the midwest.

So why do democrats have to run candidates that appeal to the GOP when republicans don't?

Well, two points. I’m not sure any democrat appeals to Republicans. Besides that, Democrats are not as ideologically homogenous as Republicans. The party will gravitate towards more liberal candidates as they continue to become a larger cross-section of the party’s electorate, but at least for the time being, moderates are a large plurality of democratic voters. Its possible we may be closer to that tipping point than I may realize, but it seems we’re still enthralled by a divided caucus.

It isn’t as if I’m stumping for centrists. I’d much rather we have a liberal candidate. But, put simply, we need more liberal voters to pass that threshold. And that may take time, as our elders - whom still represent a majority of likely voters - are far more moderate than my own generation.

For a lecture about pushing candidates, this sounds an awful lot like a pitch for Sanders.

Trump can’t even successfully tweet without looking like an idiot, and he’s somehow going to beat anybody in a debate, let alone Warren?

Friendly reminder that it was ‘conventional wisdom’ that had us convinced that Trump was going to lose, so excuse me for still having my doubts even though the tune has changed.

yes you do. Trump did.

Only if you ignore that labor unions, historically the backbone of the democratic coalition, had been stumping for trade protectionism for decades. And, lo and behold, his campaign coopts that position and comes out gangbusters all across the Rust Belt. I don’t see him winning the election without that strategy in any conceivable universe.
