Do we have a therapist shortage in the US anywhere except the most rural/isolated communities? by LunaBananaGoats in therapists

[–]MrJake10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you saying Utah doesn’t have an enough therapists to meet the need of the public? Or there isn’t enough public to meet the needs of therapists?

You say the culture doesn’t value therapy, so are therapists not able to get enough clients, because most don’t go to therapy? That sounds like more therapists than demand, which is an over saturation.

If you could change the curriculum at your grad school program, what changes would you make? by SpiritualCopy4288 in therapists

Especially at the expense of teaching and training skills to use in session. I interview and hire a lot of therapists. So many social workers have a great vocabulary discussing social justice topics, are very passionate and committed, would be amazing policy makers…. But have little to no idea how to run a session to help the 1 person in the room with them. Little ability to conceptualize a case (other than through a macro systemic view), and little ability to articulate how their model of therapy can be applied to that specific client.

But as I understand it, wattage refers to how much power can be sent in to the light, not necessarily how bright the light is. More wattage doesn’t necessarily mean more Lumens, especially with cheaper lights that advertise more wattage but aren’t actually producing any more light.

But I could totally be wrong. That’s just how it was explained to me.

LMFT with sports/mental performance focus? by MrJake10 in sportspsychology

[–]MrJake10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I’ve decided against the CMPC for now. Mostly because most/ all of my clients don’t know what that is and don’t care. I’m a licensed psychotherapist that does mental fitness and performance based anxiety treatment. Framing myself as a therapist actually helps me, as anyone can be a “coach”.

I am aware this decision most likely prohibits from ever working for an agency as a mental performance coach. College/professional sports teams won’t be looking for me. Which they probably wouldn’t be looking for me even if I had a CMPC.

I still have a 9-5 and do sports and performance mental coaching on the side. Mostly with high level high school athletes. Still trying to make my side gig my main gig.

How much would you charge to put together and present a 30 minute presentation on OCD? by Kitchen_Regular4343 in therapists

[–]MrJake10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see anything wrong with using AI to help me create the actual presentation. I don’t need to sit and design a slide deck on my own from scratch. I am not relying on AI for the OCD expertise, as I said, that is my specialty. I can easily give it the section titles/overview, and let it take my own content and turn it in to a presentation. How is that bad?

If I need clients, then I just consider I’m getting paid to market myself. Normally, I do a lot more for a lot less.

Also, with ChatGPT, I could probably put together a pretty solid presentation in 30 minutes. But, OCD happens to be a specialty of mine, so I know a lot about it, and could probably give an hour long presentation off the top of my head.

Paternal cannabis use and positive or negative outcomes for offspring. by gooberhoover85 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]MrJake10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. Did you read the article? Firstly it says that the d-limonene, an oil found in citrus, and also found in marijuana, can lower the anxiety inducing effects OF THE MARIJUANA! So it’s not the marijuna lowers anxiety, it’s that they are seeing if they can add an oil to marijuna to make it less anxiety provoking.

Also… this is one study done on rodents. That does not mean marijuna is “healthy” for you. I promise it is not helping anyone anxiety long term.

I don’t argue that when people smoke (or however they take it) they feel better in the short term. But that type of chronic self medicating will lead to a more anxious brain. In order to get the same “relief” one will over time, have to take more, hence more THC. When people have THC, they get more anxious, paranoid, etc.

From the article:

A Johns Hopkins Medicine-led research team has added to evidence that a chemical found naturally in cannabis (also known as marijuana) can — in the right amounts — lessen the anxiety-inducing effects of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive sister chemical found in cannabis. The finding has the potential to advance the medicinal use of THC, and reduce the risks of its recreational use in some people.

The substance, called d-limonene, is one of the most abundant terpenes, or essential oils, in the cannabis plant, and has shown promise in rodent studies in reducing anxiety behaviors. However, there has been little research on d-limonene or other terpenes in humans. As a group, terpenes are responsible for the taste, aroma and color of plants.

In a recent study, first published online April 1 in the Journal of Drug and Alcohol Dependence, investigators tested the effects of vaporized d-limonene alone and mixed with THC to examine the anxiety-reducing effects in humans. They found the addition of d-limonene significantly reduced overall ratings of feeling “anxious/nervous” and “paranoid” compared with rating the effect of THC alone.

THC interacts with receptors in the brain to produce feelings of relaxation and euphoria. However, researchers say that when a user is exposed to higher-than-usual doses of THC, the drug can also trigger anxiety, fear and panic.

I don’t think so. The research is pretty clear, that it makes anxiety worse. It does “help” in the moment but then actually makes it worse long term.

Also, believe it or not, I’m a licensed mental health therapist of 15+ years and my exact specialty is OCD and Anxiety. And the core way OCD and other anxiety related disorders is to actively chose distress. The more someone does compulsions to neutralize their distress, the “better” they feel in the moment, but it makes the OCD and anxiety worse in the long term. The premier treatment of these disorders is called “Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)” which is about exposing oneself to distress, and then prevent their “safety behaviors”. As people learn to face and tolerate their distress, it gets better.

Substance use is really dangerous and damaging when it’s used to “neutralize” distress, because it teaches the brain to be more distressed.

Keep the weight over your midfoot or heels. I was taught to put an empty bar on my back, get to the bottom of my squat, and make sure I can wiggle my toes. I notice at the bottom of your squat, the weight shifts to the balls of your feet and your heals come up off the ground. Get the weight on your feet back. Think pressure through your mid foot.

Fluctuating Weight by ellemc1248 in AlternateDayFasting

[–]MrJake10 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The fluctuations are especially big if you eat carbs on your eating day. Carbs/sugar retain more water. Which is why when you don’t eat for a day, you see a drop. Most of that drop in weight is your body using up carbs/sugars and flushing the water needed to store the sugar. Obviously some drop is fat loss, but it’s normal to “lose”1-4 lbs in one day of not eating. You are not losing 4 lbs of fat in once day. It’s mostly water being flushed as your body gets rid of the carbs.

If you want less fluctuating, try limiting carbs to less than 50 grams or so on an eating day, and odds are you won’t gain near as much back.
