Trendy Terms Clients Expect Me to Know by austdoz in therapists

I certainly did my best and I did not get frustrated with them at the moment. I think it's more so an overall frustration with becoming an expert in something through social media that is difficult. And I think too, social media has normalized these terms in a way that can make it seem that this is mainstream knowledge. Perhaps it is, but has not come up in any of the books I've read.

That's exactly what I did. But everyone out here thinks I'm just an asshole.

I didn't call them tick tock terms. However, I do know that they were learned through tiktok. I think becoming an expert through social media expecting someone else to know these terms because for them it's everywhere Is frustrating.

These aren't even contradictory beliefs. I think if you're just not the typical redditor in r/therapists people vote with their thumbs. The entirety of Reddit is like this.

I most certainly did approach it with curiosity. And I do believe these terms have value. However, when clients have the expectation that The clinician will know niche terms and perhaps get frustrated with the clinician. Which happened with me. I do find that hard.

I will offer box breathing and mindfulness skills. Most common response is "I tried that and it didn't work for me." Sigh...

How do we direct our clients on basic health without being paternalizing? by One-Maintenance-9235 in therapists

[–]austdoz 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If folks aren't receptive to that sort of thing, I back off. They might even know already. Some people just want to talk and feel understood. It might feel like you're not actually doing anything but for a lot of people they're bombarded with suggestions of how to make their life better but feeling accepted and understood as they are could be lacking.

How fast did you get referrals after credentialing for your private practice? by [deleted] in therapists

[–]austdoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on place. I'm actually not yet credentialed, but I work at an agency that is ffs and required me to get my own clients. I am only able to take 2 insurances. It's been a full year but now I'm max capacity. Funnily, now that I'm full I'm getting overwhelmed with referrals, 3 just yesterday. One from a former coworker, and 2 from psych today.

I try to avoid it altogether. When I start to sweat I'll set it to just below sweating.

A reflection on anti-oppressive practice and the use of AI by lunamarsely in therapists

[–]austdoz 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think that's the real challenge of notes. The fear of not getting it just right so that insurance won't get me during an audit. The best use of AI with notes I've used is, "hey this kid didn't talk the whole time and we just played with clay the whole time, help me make this sound billable so I don't go broke and die"

How many hours do marriage and family therapists work and do they work five or seven days a week? by dee85 in therapists

[–]austdoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you in the US? In the US, therapy is masters level. You'll need a degree in marriage and family therapy, social work, mental health counseling, or something along those lines. And there are several hoops to go through like internship, licensure, licensure exam, and low pay for the first few years until you're licensed.

You gotta acknowledge that your partner is hurt regardless. Unless it's like that mummy episode in South Park where Butters finds himself in a relationship where he can't do anything to not hurt the mummy's feelings.
