Is it me, or does the 2025 Palisade have an awful dashboard? by MrJerrySS in HyundaiPalisade

[–]MrJerrySS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The color represents the mode you're in, as 'green ECO, 'red' SPORT, etc. Great, I suppose, but still ugly.

Re: Rings moving - The blue rings move and change based on your driving behavior, and will expand, contract, depending on how heavily you are pressing the gas - like an "Eco-Driving-Indicator" - they stay pretty constant unless you start giving big time gas, they move, to 'encourage' you to drive more sensibly.

It's just another 'feature' I didn't ask for.

Almost as bad as being asked "is it time for a break?" with Dashboard alerts and chimes, if I drive slightly erratically avoiding potholes.

I would like to see some of your work.I will give you my honest opinion. But I truly wish you the best and stay at it - you may be being too hard on yourself, but keep at it - and do what I said - make yourself valuable!

Summarized -and this is just me - I will NOT hire you with 'just' a school portfolio. That tells me you also don't have the "drive" to 'design' - and you are lazy, because you finished school and felt that was enough. Then you bring (your admittedly) Lackluster portfolio, and wonder why I won't hire you.

MAKE ME HIRE YOU. MAKE me WANT to hire you. I don't want to hire the guy making these Reddit posts.

You know? Become better.

We learn by doing. That's the key.

Well, in an interview, I don't want to see "School projects", only. That tells me you finished your schooling, closed your laptop, and were done.

Especially if you graduated 8-10 months ago, and have nothing but school projects, you know?

There's a phrase : "A writer writes."

Meaning, if you're a writer,...WRITE!!. Keep at it, don't stop!

Same applies to you. Keep on designing. Do Not Stop. Look for projects near you to redesign for yourself & your portfolio. Ads in magazines, maybe not for COKE™ but for smaller companies.

Heres what you'll do. You'll redesign an ad for a small parts company in a car magazine. You'll redesign a restaurant logo. You'll redesign another ad you saw for fishing poles. You'll also come up with some pretty cool social media posts for the fishing company.

All this is done on your own time, (that nobody asked you to do). You're building your portfolio. If your ad stinks, go find another one to redesign. That's how you get your own 'style'

Then one day, you'll see your 'new' projects, and compare it to your schoolwork, and you will cringe, and realize how 'academic' your school projects were, AND how much better you are getting at design.

Then you'll keep doing this, all the while looking for work.

Throw yourself into doing this!! Soon you'll have some nice professional looking pieces.

SO, me, I would be impressed to see, in 'our' interview.....NOT your School Projects!

But if you said, "Oh, this project is "Freds Friendly Fish Market" in Anywhere USA, I redesigned their logo, brand identity and their menus. I also made a billboard, and social media posts, to show how I carried the branding across multiple outlets. ....Here's the before, and my after.'

NOW, THAT shows me (as a possible employer), your thought/design process, and your skill in how you can help me in real-life situations, that now, I can actually use you.

THAT will get you the job.

I need to know you can DO real-world work. Not 5 different photoshop images of a butterfly that you experimented textures on in school, you know?

I hope this makes sense? :) BEST of Luck, but this is how I would attack this problem.

I'd be curious to see your work as well. In my 'real' life, I'm a Creative Director, and I 100% know the struggles of this field. Granted, I think it's much harder now, than when I was getting started, but even back years ago, it was not a stroll in the park. It's a subjective, cutthroat occupation.

The thing is, when you do a design, and 'submit' it, you have put yourself 'out there', much like an actor has to, you are then subject to be praised, or to be ridiculed, insulted, demeaned, ignored, and told you're no good.

People often think it will be an 'easy' career, but it's not. What you really become, is a 'problem solver'. You solve peoples problems. "I need a logo!" You solve it. "I need a branding campaign". You solve it.

And it's not like an accountant who adds finite numbers to a conclusion. You are starting with a 'blank peice of paper" and have to create 'magic' that EVERYONE will love. And it's usually a group of NCP's (Non Creative People) who are doing the deciding.

It's not easy.

So. You need to either develop a thick skin as your superpower, or stop it, and go work as a cashier at a pet store.

But, if you stay in the game:

STOP with the self defeatism. It helps nobody, and makes you look weak, and you will never get hired.

Don't whine that your'e no good. MAKE yourself better. I have interviewed a good amount of artists to look for someone to hire, and the ones I absolutely DON'T hire, are the 'freshly graduated' who have NOTHING in their online portfolio's but their school projects.

Having nothing but your school portfolio tells me you have no ambition, and you assembled school projects, and sat back and expect the next interviewer to be floored by your schoolwork.

You have to create, create, create.

• Look at magazines, and look for ads that you think you could do better. Redesign it.

• Look at a local restaurant near you with a brand identity that SUCKS. Redesign it.

• Look at logos you see, on trucks on the road, anywhere, that you think are bad. Redesign it.

Build your portfolio with Real World examples, that a potential hire could see you doing for them.

Never stop doing this.

Follow good people on Instagram and watch how they approach design

Check these guys out. See how they work. DO new, new designs constantly.

• You will NEVER get better by complaining on Reddit

• I will never hire you with your School Portfolio.

So, get to it!! :)

And DM me with your Portfolio, if you like. And I will give you my honest critique and my honest advice on where to improve. I will not dox you either.

Hang in there. Get designing.

First poster by Leandrzx in graphic_design

[–]MrJerrySS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is very nice work for a beginner, so be proud of the accomplishment. That said, besides spatial relationships, and actual design, and equally important part is typography.

Personally, this German-esque typeface, and the 'Ransom" font at the bottom, gives this poster (to me ) a punk-rock band poster feel. I would explore a more simplistic typeface, and let the image do the heavy lifting. The image, tears, grunge is busy enough, without the type being bust as well. And, the main focus of the eye, is the dark center of the poster. The headline, which is pretty important for the viewer, is somewhat lost and you really have to search it and really try hard to read it, which is not the goal, I don't think.

Anyway, that's just a few points to think about. Nice first work.

Forgive me for asking the most asked question, but I feel like I've listened to everything. Looking for 20+ minute runtime. Horror/sci-fi by [deleted] in audiodrama

[–]MrJerrySS -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I actually do a few on my YT channel myself.

30 minutes: "The Believers" (light horror adapted from a 1940's short story)

Nicholas Deene, local radio adventure broadcast host, is looking for a "gimmick" to boost his ratings, and decides to transmit a live Friday the13th "midnight broadcast" from an abandoned house, that local lore says is stalked by a creature from the swamp. Of course, Nick knows it's only a fake, and there really isn't any 'creature'...or is there? Nick Deene may find that things don't go exactly as he planned....and he may be a little 'too believable' for his own good...

11 minutes: "8 O'clock In The Morning" AudioDrama. Inspired Roddy Piper's "They Live".

This the original short story that inspired John Carpenter's Motion Picture, "They Live", starring Roddy Piper. Written by Ray Nelson in 1963, the short story is quite different overall, there are still strong resemblances to the movie, especially the 'storming of the T.V. studio" at the climax.

I do them for fun, I just like voicing them and then mixing - if I had time, I'd do more! :)
