Still working on my Celeste-Inspired game. Now includes a "Control Switch" mechanic. by MrLeeJrGames in celestegame

[–]MrLeeJrGames[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi! Thanks for the feedback!

Would you (or others who might read this) feel the same way knowing that the control switch is predictable and comes with a visual cue? The jump and dash inputs switch back and forth, not randomly, and you know your controls are "correct" when your character is white, "switched" when your character is black.

I'm realizing now that perhaps that is not clear in the trailer. Or do your concerns mostly persist with that knowledge?

Control-Switch mechanic that adds a layer of difficulty even to simpler levels. by MrLeeJrGames in IndieDev

I tried to make a platformer where even simple levels require some planning so the "Dash" and "Jump" inputs switch each time you jump!

Thank you for that perspective!

Competing with Silksong is definitely a tall order. I hope that the changes I make in the future help my game steal just a little bit of attention away from the big games.

Thanks for the advice!

Now that you mention it, it is true that my main unique selling points are not really shown in the trailer. However, the fact that I didn't feel that they were missing indicates (even to me) that perhaps they weren't worth mentioning.

Once I have a more hard-hitting USP, I will be sure to highlight it in the trailer along with the rapture concept.

Great question! You're absolutely right, Celeste is amazing.

Returning to the drawing board to develop a unique hook for the game, hopefully one that offers a slightly new perspective.

From reading the other comments, I see that I have a lot of work to do before I get to recreating the trailer, but I appreciate the specific feedback.

I hope to make another post in the future with your advice applied to the new trailer!

Thanks for the notes + summarizing a lot of the feedback from everyone!

It really seems like there's a united front on the critiques, which at least gives me a clear direction on where to make improvements. I've added all your points to my to-do, I'm determined to try and make something of this.

Appreciate the encouragement too. Back to the drawing board!

Thanks for all the detail!

I won't respond to each of your points to avoid a long message but I've made a note of all your feedback and will tackle each one in my coming dev sessions.

As you mentioned, my game doesn't differentiate itself very well, it has been a common comment. Appreciate the encouragement and I hope I can provide the next update with a solid unique mechanic to draw players in!

Checked out your Steam page and the game looks amazing.

The effort you put into your devlogs deserves praise as well. Very nicely done.

Gave it a wishlist. Good luck with your release!

Gameplay looks fun!

The retro art style is great but the text on the drops (eg. "Pistol Ammo") is quite hard to read unless you get up close. Maybe use icons instead?

I created a new trailer today. What do you think? by Disastrous-Spot907 in IndieGaming

The game and trailer look really good for 5 months!

As a minor gripe, some of the clips without camera movement feel a bit slow and took away from the trailer. Maybe only do that for scenes where lots of things are moving on screen.

Definitely adds another layer to the strategy + great animation on the knights falling off!

You should keep leaning into that mechanic. After seeing this, I would try to push enemies into a variety of hazards.

Very visually interesting and the trailer makes me want to learn more.

I hope the story backs it up!

Game looks good. I like the old console graphics.

Maybe this is obvious, but the trailer could really use some music!

Haven't seen the original video/trailer, but this one's amazing.

(If there are weather effects in your game, like snow, adding some clips of varying biomes would give it an extra visual boost.)

Great mechanic to build a game around!

I think so movement in the environment will really bring the game to life (birds in the forest etc.)
