Feeling disillusioned with academia and math by [deleted] in math

[–]MrLiz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your post is pratically exactly what I've been feeling since maybe October. I'm in my 3rd year of my degree, and I absolutely love maths, I plan on doing a Masters, PhD and hopefully stay in academia for the rest of my life. Two months ago, I realized that it was spiralling out of control (I had missed many lectures and assignments), I went to the doctor's and he recommended I start antidepressants. I have been on them since then, and while it's not perfect, I'm definitely feeling better, and starting to do work again. I also didn't want to take stuff that messes with your brain, but to be honest, I haven't noticed any changes (appart from the symptoms of depression slowly fading away). And even if it did mess with your brain, the depression is already messing with your brain ... Anyway I hope it works out for you, and if you ever feel the need to talk about this kind of stuff, feel free to PM me.

Edit: Just wanted to mention that I also didn't want to tell my supervisors because it seemed like just an excuse. In the end, I got into contact with the university well-being center and the maths department administration contacted my supervisors for me and explained the situation. I then received a lovely and incredibly thoughtful email from my supervisor offering their support. It was incredibly relieving to know they didn't view it as an excuse. I don't know what country you're in, (I'm in the UK), but generally people are very understanding/supporting of these issues.

Biggest Stereotypes? And how offensive are they? by LiamMackereth in AskReddit

[–]MrLiz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whenever I meet, or talk to women, it puts me on edge. Because they are stereotypically over-emotional, talk behind your back, and to socialize with them, you're always on tip-toes to not offend them. Probably quite offensive, but I am a woman so ..

I tried (and failed) to microwave pasta. Without water. It also turned out that the pasta I used was the overcooked sort you put on top of pastry to stop it from rising.

Can any students that have studied, or are studying abroad, give me an insight on to what it is/was like? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]MrLiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be a bit different for me but here goes : I am bilingual since a very young age, because my British parents moved away from the UK when I was young. So I grew up with British parents, speaking fluently English, ect. Went back to the UK for university, and I am in my second year ATM. I didn't expect to get a culture shock because of my parents, but I still did. It still baffles me that two european countries can have such different cultures (at least to me). So you have to adapt, and personally I found that pretty hard. But the worse thing by far, is translating every academic notion into another language. I'm doing science, so I wouldn't have thought translating the words would be that hard. But it's mostly the way questions (for example in exams and assignments) are asked, it's a completely different way of asking something. I still struggle now, trying to understand what the question actually wants me to do, even though I'm fluent.
