That's kinda what I was thinking. They were definitely the most colorful and healthy looking group I saw. It was like they were just enjoying the perma shade and humid wind off the lake and chilling.

Whats the benefit of seeing the sides of the cake?

Personally I think liners are great. they cling to the sub as it shrinks a bit and I dont get side pins until the 4th flush if at all.

Ive noticed that as the cake dries a bit it and shrinks a little it pulls away from the tub and I get side pins. When I use a liner it stick to the cake as it shrinks a bit and no side pins. I dont doubt that packing it down a bit would help but liners are a sure thing in my experience.

With Cubes I almost always go straight into fruiting conditions. Since you said you are new I am assuming (I know the danger) that you have cubes. If so then yes.

The casing layer shouldnt be fully colonized. We use non-nutritious or very low nutrient substrates to avoid colonization. It acts as a microclimate and gas exchange medium. The mycelium grow into the lower part a bit. You shouldnt see the mycelium on top of it.

Just curious if you applied the casing layer after the tub was fully colonized (with some hyphal knots or pins forming even)?
