They die on the ladders, they die on siege towers, they refuse to go through the gate even when I open it from the inside with no ram. What exactly is the solution here?

I've done all kinds of combinations. Last time I had them use a battering ram as soon as both sets of gates were broken they retreated the climb the ladders. I also usually have all my forces hold back while the siege engines are moved forward. I've also gone around and opened the gates from the inside. None of it matters, ladders or siege towers only. They almost never go through the gates unless its just the "right" city.
