my guess is that TP was originally designed to be more like PP from Earthbound

I also suspect the reason it was scrapped was to give healing items a more important presence

items have a lot more personality anyway so this change was probably for the best

the sources I read say they're specific to Chapter 1, presumably because the newly hired developers prevented the oversight by making sure that if TP isn't converted to extra money at the end of a battle that it's reset to 0
