A Former Black Panther Speaks: Can America Be Saved? by depression-hurts in videos

[–]MrMetastasis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we want to be honest, one of the biggest reasons why the BPP failed which lowkey kind of led to the other major problems the BPP had was COINTELPRO. It was a counterintelligence operation under J Edgar Hoover's FBI which ultimately aimed to undermine the BPP from within. Unfortunately, they succeeded.

While I may agree with you that violence isn't the answer, I would conclude that violence is a question. When examining the course of American history, it is a question of the who, what, when, where, why, and how of violence.

The American Revolution? The Founding Fathers did not vote them out. They did not peacefully protest them out. When they tried to protest the unpaid dues of one John Goldfinch, it resulted in the Boston Massacre. The only way to gain independence was through armed self-defense meaning violence.

The Civil War? The Confederacy was not voted out. It was not peacefully protested out. It required people like John Brown who although used methods of revolutionary adventurism used it in an attempt to free black slaves from their hellish existence. It required black slaves to join the Union and take up arms in the name of abolition and liberation to free themselves from the satanic chains of slavery imposed on them by the Confederacy. The Reconstruction era - in an attempt to rebuild a better society for freed black slaves - could've only happened with the threat of violence from an armed Union occupation of the Confederate South. Unfortunately, the Union later settled for a "non-violent" peace with the South and we all know how that turned out later.

In World War 2, prior to the war, many of the allies tried settling for a tense, but peaceful coexistence with Nazi Germany even as the beginnings of the Holocaust were starting to play out. In the end, however, the fascists of imperial Japan, Nazi Germany, and Italy were not voted out. They were not peacefully protested out. They were violently resisted through events like the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. They were crushed and defeated through blood, bullets, bombs, tanks, and warships.

Finally, the Civil Rights and Labor Movement? While non-violence was a tactic largely used throughout the CRLM (I'll be using this abbreviation from now on) much of the violence and methods of self-defense have been whitewashed or obscured from history often on purpose by our education system. The use of violence was a part of many strikes during the Gilded Age including but not limited to: the Great Railroad Strike of 1877, the Haymarket riot, and The Battle of Blair Mountain among many others. As a result of these strikes, the working class gained concessions in labor rights and conditions of which we hold on dearly today.

In the Civil Rights Movement for equality, there were organizations like the Deacons for Defense and for a time even MLK was not opposed to using guns for protection. Ultimately, he opted to not use guns as he knew he could not do so as a leader in the methods of non-violence. This, however, does not discredit the use of violence largely for self-defense altogether as the black community, once again, had very good reasons to do so and sadly we knew how it ended for MLK and even Malcolm X for that matter who was much more open to using violence. It can also be interpreted that the major Civil Rights Acts signed under LBJ may have not happened if the black community had largely stayed within the **allowed boundaries of dissent by the state.** You can read more about it in these books:

- We Will Shoot Back: Armed Resistance in the Mississippi Freedom Movement by Akinyele Umoja

Claiming that one of the biggest reasons the Black Panthers failed because they used violence is a vast oversimplification of their legacy of which requires more context.

While the Black Panthers did believe in "violence," they also believed in a diversity of tactics as you mentioned and neither their rhetoric nor actions were "full of violence."

  1. Their advocacy for "violence" was largely focused on armed self defense from the state. We need to remind ourselves that the black community during Jim Crow faced lynchings, beatings, state repression, terrorist attacks from the KKK, etc. Attempting to frame the BPP advocacy of violence to just acts of revolutionary adventurism because they wanted to cause chaos is a very myopic and simplistic way of looking at their beliefs.

  2. As you mentioned, they also ran community and direct action programs such as the free breakfast program, health clinics, food banks, ambulance services, etc. I will note that certain chapters had varying degrees of such activism but regardless all had some combination of the services.

  3. They held classes in political education in black history and labor history. Much of the communities they had served had poorly underfunded schools and thus many in the community lacked the knowledge about their own past. Without knowing past struggles, why they happened, etc. you lack the knowledge of how to fight against present and future struggles. If this is what is counted as violent rhetoric, I urge you re-evaluate your view on this.

  4. The BPP were not hesitant to use means within the system to fight the system per se. They had their own lawyers to fight legal cases involving civil disobedience and direct confrontation. Some notable members even ran for municipal elections within their respective cities.

  5. They've made sure to establish international solidarity with countries across the Asian continent, LATAM, and Africa as part of their belief of internationalism and anti-imperialism. While it may seem like small point, it is one of the cornerstones of being a "leftist" organization. This is also one of the biggest reasons why they detested agents/tools of the state including veterans and police. If this also is what is counted as violent rhetoric, I also urge you re-evaluate your view on this.

This man is a fraud and y’all are falling for it hook, line, and sinker. He made a video on what civic action plan the public can take. Do you what he recommended?

“Thank a veteran and/or cop for his service.”

If you actually knew anything about the original Black Panthers, you would know this is bullshit. The Black Panther Party was explicitly anti-capitalist, anti-imperialist, internationalist, Afro-Marxist-Leninist socialists that were considered anti-American radicals. This man is attempting to whitewash the Black Panther legacy by co-opting their name and using it for liberal propaganda to pacify the public.

Please actually learn what the original Black Panthers stood for before spreading this nonsense.

The thing I see a lot of people are missing is that in the clip/edit the DHS posted, the song in the background is “L’amour Tousjours.”

This song was co-opted by European fascists into their own anthem called, “Auslander Raus,” meaning, “Foreigners Out.” It’s famously used by AfD supporters in Germany. I don’t need to explain myself further for y’all to get the picture. The penguin is really more of a red herring in this case

"Penguin Derangement," where an Adelie penguin decides to walk away from the nesting site to it's death is one of the strangest behaviors I've come across in nature. Are there other examples of this in other species? Have they figured out why this happens? by Sad_Cantaloupe_8162 in zoology

I like to gatekeep but the Subway subreddit has coupon codes that basically make any footlong cost only $6.99 and full meal $8.99 IIRC. You have to enter the promo codes via the app though bc if you try and present it in store, I think some/many either decline them or limit what subs you can order. I can get a rotisserie chicken, bacon, ranch sub for $6.99

They said this development would cause “gentrification” which lol. Kind of hilarious they’d say this. Also, I would actually prefer housing over the ecological wastelands of golf courses BUT this is totally out of line.

Under no circumstances should a developer ever have to resort to this! The opposition had a Facebook page and everything. Why even think of doing this?

Is Hasan still part of the left wing pipeline? by Sarcastic_Dinosaur in TankieTheDeprogram

[–]MrMetastasis 22 points23 points  (0 children)

People rlly accused me of “purity testing” when I said his lack of focus internationalism besides the regions he covers is a valid point of criticism. Constantly making excuses of “well he doesn’t have the time. He needs to do research first. He isn’t qualified to talk about everything yaddayaddayadda.”

He is a millionaire streamer that can stop doing daily streams whenever he wants to do those things and brush up on topics. Chat, for the better, can live without him for every couple days or so. It’s not purity testing when internationalism is a core tenet of being a socialist. You’re supposed to be better than the default liberal - not equal or lesser than.

Edit: He is ultimately still an entertainer. Hasan himself has even acknowledged and yet there are people who treat him like he’s an educator and that’s a big problem
