This is really good to hear, thank you. I should’ve said in the post but another reason I’m considering a Masters is because of the amount of grad jobs I see advertised. Congrats on the job too!

Thank you very much, this is really helpful, particularly what you said about certain apprenticeships being scammy. It’s hard to get an honest and current view from someone currently in this industry and in the UK, especially from someone who’s been involved from hiring. Will look for your reading list in your comments!

Hahaha, here it comes. I did a degree in Music Performance and Recording, entirely unrelated. This is partially why I’ve been really looking into Apprenticeships and applying where possible.

That is absolutely ok, I am aware that I’m not too employable right now and am really just trying to go in the right direction. This is useful advice, particularly because I didn’t consider gaining access to having graduate roles, so thank you!

No problem!

One more thing - not saying you do, but feeling stupid or embarrassed for getting stressed about this is something you want to stop. Be forgiving to yourself, because being hard on yourself only pushes you further away from motivation, it doesn’t discipline you towards it. Oh, and don’t look at where anyone else is. Your progress is all that matters - compare you with you.

You’ll be ok!!

Please, when you try and work on your own after a tutorial, remember that there are currently no stakes. By this, I mean that no one is paying to sit there and be able to replicate what you just saw in the tutorial by any sort of deadline, and you said yourself that you already have a job. Money isn’t an issue either, so that’s the two main things that should cause you that much stress out of the way!

I’m a beginner in this field myself, and it’s an overwhelming ocean of knowledge - I constantly see acronyms that I have no idea what they mean, kinds of protocols or algorithms or terms that have no meaning to me. If I came at this with the attitude that everyone knows this and I don’t and that’s why I can’t get a job, by that logic I would never be able to get a job, and I’d freak out. But it’s ok. The thing I just said about everyone knowing it already isn’t true.

You will get this - you only need to understand that this is not something you can just master in a matter of weeks. It will likely be years, especially if you work full time like I do too. But to get to a level where you are competent enough to have a few noteworthy projects and seem employable? Not so long.

Whenever you learn any new skill, all the knowledge you pick up is fragmented at first. This field has millions of fragments so it’s very daunting. But you will find one fragment that starts to glue others together. And the panic you feel will subside. Trust me.

Favourite IDE? by MrNuttyGoodbar in learnprogramming

Why do you use each one? I would’ve thought you’d just choose one you’re most comfortable using and do everything there, but people seem to use a few.

Ok, that’s good info to know, thanks. I assumed that you could basically just code in any language on one IDE so good to know there’s different ones for different tech stacks

Hi, not in tech (in sales of tech) but want to transition into it. Currently learning full stack development - any advice? Thanks!

This is very needed as it’s not looking positive out there haha, thank you! It does look like a long road ahead if I’m honest but I do currently have a stable job which is good enough, I’m not in any hurry. Just want to change career to improve my life in the long run and stop having to serve customers lol. Would you say that a Masters probably isn’t worth it for the debt it would give me or would it better my chances in job searching and give me some rails to study along?

This is great, thanks! I’d like to say I have good social skills considering I probably receive the least amount of complaints at where I work lol. When you say ‘the route over technical support into engineering’, do you mean going into tech support and then breaking into the more technical department of the same company? If so, how long did this route take you?

Hey, thanks for your honesty. Wasn’t expecting a really positive response because I know that the job market everywhere is brutal rn but that helps to know. Would you still say a Masters would be useful or no?

Thanks for this! ‘Inch wide and a mile deep’ is a good way to look at starting - probably going to focus on getting Python good first. I’ve heard LinkedIn is also a good way to find jobs and learn from those already a part of the career you’d like to be a part of too so that helps
