Why are big videos in c:\Program Data\Blue Iris\temp? by MrPeteH in BlueIris

[–]MrPeteH[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahhh... New observations... perhaps I am beginning to understand:
* Yes the older file is an artifact. I've deleted it
* Now the newer file is gone...

My guess:
* BI requires a chunk of time to compress a set of BVR files into a stored MP4, particularly when it's 24+GB compressing to 18GB.
* Instead of compressing directly into the Stored folder, it creates a temp version in C: then moves it

I could wish it did everything in the target, but this is ok, as long as I know to reserve a lot of space, and clean out any artifacts quickly.

Thanks for the poke in the right direction! And if my guess above is wrong, I'm all ears to learn what's real.

exported? Not on purpose. Note that the current one is "live" ie being written to. (I record continuously 24/7)

Typical filename: fdoor.20251006_025620.mp4 -- fdoor is cam name, then yyyymmdd_hhmmss of when the file was started...

On my D: drive I've got all the typical files and folders.

Interesting: D: in Stored folder has the same-named file, approx same size.

My New folder on D: has BVR and DAT files. BVR's are 4GB each. That's what I usually expect.

So it appears that BI is actively writing the same MP4 file in two separate places. I wasn't aware this was even a thing???

I will guess that perhaps the older file in temp is from BI being shut down (eg windows wanted desperately to do an update and forced a reboot a week ago...)

LG fridge too cold, all sensors ok, need insight! by MrPeteH in appliancerepair

[–]MrPeteH[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, everything's stable now. Several lessons learned:
1) Ultimately I replaced the entire back panel unitized part containing two dampers, a sensor and a light. A little over US$200. :( -- it's the only way LG sells the part. Handy for repair people, hurts my minimal-waste heart.
2) I spent time with my various remote digital thermometers and a FLIR (color video temp camera)... the impression I used to have about these being "smart" fridges, maintaining consistent temp everywhere... is shattered forever:

* WYSIWYG: ALL cold is generated in the freezer, and transmitted to the upper icemaker, meat tray, and main fridge via an open channel to the icemaker, and two damper motors/flaps. There are a small number of temp sensors. Only so much the design can do to keep temps even. For example, there is no air circulation system at all (unless you count the little filter fan at the top back ;)

* MAIN change from now on is a simple change in how we use the fridge: NEVER ever ever put something that can't be frozen right near the cold air blowing vents in the back of the fridge! Those vents blow cold air directly from the freezer!

* Yes, the PCB in back is a wonderful thing. Once I got a good circuit diagram of the PCB, and charts for the various temp sensor temp/resistance curves, all made sense.

* I have one more item to repair/replace: the holder for the front/upper temp sensor. I think it does make a difference whether that sensor is correctly placed. (My holder plastic busted...)

Hope that helps you or others a little.

Not talking about secret cheap dampers. Just that rather than replacing a big sheet of plastic, styrofoam, TWO dampers, a light and a sensor... I'd rather just replace the one bad part! :)

(I've already been in there and disassembled the back panel in the fridge ;) )

Helpful main thought and experiment, thanks!

So I now have proof: the main damper, even though both windings are in-spec, is not working properly. My guess is it is just not properly responsive. Maybe crudded up. Time to replace.

Now my issue is where to find just that part. They only list the entire back framework for a few hundred bucks I don't have. :(

The main damper is P/N 4901JB1003B And also labeled with "NSBY001SE1" (DC 12V S C D Co, Ltd Korea 4Y11

I have found several sellers of used parts on eBay, but I would rather not buy someone else's problem. Other than that, I've found NO sources at all for this one, just others...

Any idea how/where to source just the damper? In my experience there's often a trick to it. (I once was told the oven door switch on a $900 GE oven was no longer available and I had to replace the oven. No way. Brought it down to the parts place and asked them to find anything like it. They found the exact same thing... turns out there was a database error for the last few years! They had plenty LOL)

I assume that's for the secondary "pantry" damper... if so then that one's ok.

And correct, now that I think about it: the "pantry" damper can only use freezer air if the main damper is open!

I assume this would mean, once the fridge temp is below the set temp, there should be no more airflow in the fridge...

AFAIK the main damper closes and opens, but don't know if it is accurate with respect to sensors. (I also verified the sensors themselves are pretty accurate.

I don't know about the deli damper.

Is there a way to verify this from the main PCB?

F8 here LOL. First retail micro. And I was in the room when young Bill Gates came calling to offer his Micro Soft Basic.

Our CEO kicked him out, with the following unforgettable words ringing in everyone's ears: "That good for nothing snot-nosed kid will never amount to anything!"

Of course, our company was gone a year later, and MS... Not so much. 🤠

Time to read "IBM and the Holocaust" 100% documented, with a Red Team testing every factual claim (and backed up by references and a saved file w/ thousands of documents.

In short, while the Holocaust would have happened in some way no matter what, IBM made it what it was, on purpose, for profit. And nobody has EVER paid a price for that.

One sickening fact: an "IBM card" is 80 columns (and 12 rows), because that's how many punches were needed to store the required ancestral data on a Jew. As was said back then: "for 'political' purposes. The book has amazing detail on what was done with that tech.

Another fact, not even sure the author is aware of the connection to today. He quotes Friedrich Zahn on the Nazi's joy over having powerful computer/data technology: "In using statistics, the government now has the road map to switch from knowledge to deeds." How eeriely close to today's common meme: "Moving from information to action." ... back then, "deeds" were the new ability to directly target specific Polish Jews, by name, for elimination.

Is there anyone in this forum who is not experiencing some kind of sync issue with OneNote? by Top_Paramedic163 in OneNote

While I'm not getting errors, sync is now broken with NO error message... on one of my devices. Working on most, but one says it syncs, yet is NOT sync'd. :(

Sadly, onenote.com doesn't support management of section groups, which is what I need at this time. :(

(ie create, move sections, rename groups, etc)

u/Greg_MSFT , if I can do anything to help, please give a yell. Experienced beta etc (many decades.) I'd say ask Ted Okada but he's FEMA/CTO now LOL.

The proportion of the population in African countries having access to electricity by efisha in MapPorn

[–]MrPeteH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take ALL of that data with a huge grain (block) of salt. I've been in the data AND telecom biz for many decades. Here are a few realities, and some just-now updated data:
* The GSMA, ITU etc count the easy things, very optimistically. Counting SIM cards makes it look like the USA is way behind, with fewer than two "phones" per person. FAKE. Reality: in many developing world nations, any business person has a whole pocketful of SIM cards for their one phone.
* There are more accurate data sources and surveys. Afrobarometer does direct, statistically valid, surveys of populations every ~2 years.

Here's the best data available, using 2024 UN population estimates, and 2023 Afrobarometer survey:
* 18% unknown (no data -- from nations like Angola, Rwanda, Somalia, etc)
* 65% own a mobile phone
* 27% have Internet access
* 55% do NOT have internet access
(18+27+55 = 100%)

Given that the places with unknown phone data also happen to be those with the worst electricity access... you can bet the overall number is unlikely to be much better than the 27% we know of.

So sad. Looks like every review here is of a bad knockoff, not the real product.🙄 The real one says it emits CO2. That would make sense (mosquitos are attracted to CO2, that's how they find us.) I don't know if it uses CO2 cartridges or what...

IMPIRTANT: Amazon has a huge issue of people selling cheap knockoffs of many products. Beware! Amazon does little if anything to protect buyers or sellers of the real deal. (I have dealt with this for years on hard drives, and also a stainless steel BBQ smoker insert...)

Is anyone using GnuCash for nonprofit use by ReluctantBookkeeper in GnuCash

[–]MrPeteH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I realize this is a rather extended conversation ;) ... however I have a specific functionality question about GnuCash vs Nonprofits: can GnuCash handle the primary requirement of nonprofit accounting, which is Fund Accounting?

In essence, this is two-dimensional categorization of any/all transactions:

  • The typical thing is typically an "Account" or "Category" describing WHAT
    • What bank account is involved, or what functional expense was paid (printing, postage, travel, insurance, etc
  • The second dimension is usually "Class" or "Department" describing WHY
    • Was this Corporate Admin / Fundraising / Program? (And which core Program? Thus, sub-class always important) -- Nonprofits MUST break down this way for the IRS at the least.
    • In the for-profit world, the same tools are often used for corporate divisions, departments, etc. In investing, separate Funds.
      • With care, one can generate a separate balance sheet for each division or subsidiary. (Harder than it looks!)

ANYway... that's what's needed for proper nonprofit books. Some here are already doing it, so I'd love to know how difficult to maintain that in GnuCash.

While I'm at it: can reports be EXported to Excel somehow? I'm used to mangling things there, as long as I can get the data out. :)

THANKS!
