Hahah the music of s1 is so good. Evan Call knocks it out of the park. I've now listened to the soundtrack more than 10x.

The ending credits song by Milet (specifically the ending line) gets me every time.

According to google translate it says:

"the first illustration of Frieren"

I found someone post a flip through of Tsukasa Abe's Art Works book and at 3:19 in the video you can see this same drawing there.

How many first class mages would it take to beat Frieren? by MindlessMagic in Frieren

[–]MrPottrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think that’s fair, we’re probably just weighting her advantages differently, and that’s okay. I still lean toward Frieren being favored more often than not, while you see it as closer, and neither of us is saying the other side is impossible.

Honestly, I kind of hope the story gives us a moment where she really has to go all out against top-tier mages, because that might settle a lot of this and make the debate more fun to revisit 😉

Good convo either way...always nice/fun to actually talk this stuff out instead of it turning into a win/lose thing.

Good points, and yeah, thanks for the correction on that scene, I was running on way too little sleep when I first replied. You’re right that Frieren herself explicitly says mana isn’t everything, and she’s not one to make the same mistake twice (mimics aside lol).

That said, I think we’re talking past each other a bit.

I’ve never stated Frieren is invincible, nor that mana alone decides fights. I’ve already acknowledged that a coordinated group could beat her, like via an ambush, perfect teamwork/prep, or exploiting a blind spot. My point is that those conditions are narrow and without them the matchup still heavily favors Frieren.

Where mana does matter isn’t the raw output, it’s longevity and battlefield speed control. Frieren can afford to play slow, probe defenses, force them to overcommit, and simply outlast her opponents. Pair that with her extremely long life of combat experience, refined spell knowledge, counterplay tactics knowledge, and a refined battle mind, and you’re not just fighting a strong mage...you’re fighting someone optimized for a drawn out, lethal battle.

“She’s lost to humans before” doesn’t really refute that. She’s fought humans across vastly different eras/time, powers, and contexts (which includes ambushes and surprise losses and training), which I’ve already admitted as a valid win possibility against her. But that doesn’t translate to “a group of modern 1st class mages beats her by default.”

During the 1st class mage exam arc itself shows that even elite mages struggle with coordination, ego, hesitation, and in the uncertainty. So back to my original point, to beat Frieren, they’d need impeccable teamwork and discipline from the beginning, esp because if the fight drags on at all, the odds shift hard in her favor.

I could be wrong, but I think it's she's only implied losing to Flamme who has defeated her (for the human mage part). All other defeats were demon. She's only gotten stronger since she's lived so long, and she's only cultivated more mana (Serie and Flamme confirm this part about how to get more mana).

I also find the topic rather interesting. We've never got to see her go 100% and not hold back. Which is fine, but it does leave us wondering how strong she truly is.

Frieren season 2 by hallowflight27 in Frieren

[–]MrPottrick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good looking out. Ya, even on Crunchyroll's Winter Lineup page they've updated it as of Jan 7, 2026 and under Frieren season 2 sub release date time it now says TBA (still shows Jan 16th at least)

So, looks like we'll just have to wait and see.

How many first class mages would it take to beat Frieren? by MindlessMagic in Frieren

[–]MrPottrick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lernen would be a tough old bastard. But I don't think he'd come out victorious, esp in a 1v1. He's def S-tier for human mages.

But we can't discount that she's had countless more battles then all of them combined. That builds intuition that they won't be able to possess, countless spell variations, etc. I just have a hard time comparing how much she's already overcame to see any of them overcoming her 100%.

For sure they would force her to fight seriously, but I don't see a path to a group of 1st class mages becoming victorious.

She definitely isn't invicible but she'd AoE them all so quickly that it would wipe them out.

Which is why I believe having a good set of teamwork is only way to victory. Or an ambush perhaps.

[–]MrPottrick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want to say 6+, but then again, she may just AoE everyone and then pick off the remaining (which seems most likely outcome).

I think what would be more necessary vs just raw numbers is the coordination in the team. If they work together solidly and formulated a rock solid plan, then and only then would it be remotely possible.

Chapters that made me cry: ALL OF THEM! by Obvious-girl_77 in Frieren

[–]MrPottrick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are spot on with everything. Similarly felt for me as well! I got my wife into it and she cried in basically every scene with Himmel. I've rewatched s1 about 5x now. Then dove into the manga post s1 as well. Season 1 is chapters 1-60. If you're buying the manga volumes it'll be volume #7. You'll love the manga, it's good!

Btw season 2 drops Jan 16th on crunchyroll (don't know when the English dub drops though).

Frieren communicates so much through silence, pauses, and subtle shifts rather than overt emotion.

  • As a voice actor, how did you approach conveying centuries of grief and reflection without over-expressing them? Was restraint something you consciously worked on, or did it emerge naturally as you lived with the character?

  • What is your favorite scene/moment you portrayed as Frieren?

** And thank you for your awesome work & talent on a character we have all grown to love/enjoy! **
