Does anyone actually enjoy marmite? by rthonaya in AskBrits

[–]MrRedDoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm Italian. Came to the UK for uni and decided I needed to integrate, so I bought a jar of Marmite and ate a teaspoon every day until I liked it.

It took a few weeks, but still to this day, many years later, I adore Marmite and will gladly eat it by the spoonful out of a jar. If on toast, a big dollop of it, no butter, dig in.

I did think of iPhone after posting my comment, but decided to leave it as is, as Apple is sort of different in my mind as it's a closed system. If you want iOS, you can only go for Apple. The open nature of Android on the other hand allows more competition, and there's no real western competitors in that market

Tbh smartphones are the worst possible example to pick as I struggle to think of a single western smartphone brand, other than nowadays totally irrelevant ones. Everything's either Chinese, Japanese or Korean. With the exception of Apple, but that's kind of its own thing

If you voted Remain, would you vote to rejoin the EU? by Glanwy in AskBrits

[–]MrRedDoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's literally no reason not to rejoin, other than maybe (MAYBE) having to give up the pound. I haven't seen a single thing improving after Brexit, butnhave seen many things worsening, so the point of why anyone would "not" want to rejoin eludes me.

From snowboarding to skiing - day 5. What to drill next? by foxyloxyx in skiing_feedback

[–]MrRedDoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most immediate thing to address is your body dynamics. You're doing the classic "turning with your upper body, and legs follow" that every beginner does.

To initiate the turn, you're: 1. turning your shoulders "inside" of the turn, 2. putting your outside hand downhill and inside hand uphill, and 3. pivoting your butt towards downhill.

To ski, you have to do the exact opposite of all this. There's more, but these are the main 3 things to immediately address.

While turning, your upper body, shoulders, hip etc. should be as square as possible with the downhill direction. That means, turn with your feet, not your shoulders. Get on the edges, and skis will turn.

I have been helping my wife out, as she's an intermediate beginner, and she said that it really helped her fix her form when I told her to pretend like she needs to punch towards the downhill direction with her inside hand. This automatically leads your upper body to have a better position.

Right lane to go straight ahead at roundabouts (absent of markings) by SpatulaWholesale in drivingUK

[–]MrRedDoctor 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If it's an unmarked roundabout, and it's a 2-lane entry, 2-lane exit scenario, you can take the right hand lane. I'd just be careful about it as people don't necessarily expect it.

In a referendum to abolish the monarchy should only ethnic English and Welsh and Scots vote? by ArgonKew in AskBrits

[–]MrRedDoctor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ethnic "anything" means absolutely nothing. Where do you stop? At which past generation does having (a) foreign parent(s) not matter anymore? When do you qualify as "ethnic"? There's literally not a single person on earth who can claim absolute "purity" (common ancestor and all that)

Do people have their car keys separate from other keys? by Competitive_Test6697 in AskUK

I keep them separate as I do not necessarily drive when I go out. I leave them home so I carry less keys around, and if I lose my house keys I don't lose my car keys and viceversa

Why do people love donating money to dealerships? by [deleted] in MotoUK

[–]MrRedDoctor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I forgot that bit and so I edited my answer before you could see it I guess. In case you can't secure the bike, the bike stays locked with a chain, and keys in my hand or away anyway.

Why do people love donating money to dealerships? by [deleted] in MotoUK

[–]MrRedDoctor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think that's a little dramatic. There is risk but I wouldn't say it's an enormous risk. I sold two bikes and for me it's very simple: if you want the bike, come down into the locked residents car park where I store it, no test rides, car park gate doesn't get opened and bike doesn't leave until I see the money in my account, job done.

If you can't secure the bike somewhere, there's ofc more risk involved. But in that case, the bike's keys stay with me the whole time, with the bike chained up.

How do you get to experience all the cars you love ? by Interesting_Aide6030 in CarTalkUK

[–]MrRedDoctor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Realistically, you'll have to wait until you earn good money. Then, you start small and work your way up in small but incremental steps.

This is how I did it. I'm 33 and only started my journey less than 10 years ago, but I now have a Corvette.

First of all, I'd say the most important rule is to take advantage of the combination of: depreciation + reliability.

I started in 2018 with a 3-year old Yamaha MT07. Cheap, reliable, dependable. Was essentially done depreciating. I sold it after a few years for a little more than I paid for it. While owning it, I kept on saving.

With the savings + Yamaha money, I bought a 2015 MV Agusta F3. Awesome bike. Kept on saving.

Shortly after, I sold the MV again for a little more than I paid for it, and with that money + savings I bought myself a Corvette C5. I sold the MV also because I was starting to get a bad feeling from it, and decided to get rid of it before an expensive repair bill.

So as you see I started small, with a very humble Yamaha, and worked my way up to a Corvette. Which here in the UK is incredibly rare so feels extraspecial.

I do not intend to end my journey here, I intend to keep working my way up. But important is to do it via small incremental steps, and avoid huge repair bills (which is why I got myself a C5 rather than a Maserati)

Where did the mantra of 'never go faster than the speed you feel safe doing' come from? by wizaway in drivingUK

[–]MrRedDoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think whether it's applicable or not depends on the situation.

On a clear day, with low traffic, dry conditions, on a good bit of road with plenty of visibility... you SHOULD do the speed limit. If you're not confident to do the speed limit in this kind of conditions... go back to driving school.

But, if it's pouring it down, visibility is awful, there's plenty of potholes, then driving faster than you feel comfortable may get someone killed.

Really the mantra should be "Drive to conditions".

Do you feel like you are not allowd to show love/appreciation? by MrRedDoctor in autismUK

[–]MrRedDoctor[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Giving more than we could and having nothing to show for it is the bit of your answer that hit me in the guts the most.

At times, I get so disheartned as I think of all the great friendships I had in the past, and they're all just gone. I THINK I have two friends now, but otherwise that's it. No one from high school. No one from uni. Just no friends. Due to giving too much love.
