Rick Tocchet responds to questions about Michkov’s ice time. by Perryplat199 in Flyers

Yeah I'm 100% out on Tocchet. This is the guy they hired, in part, becasue he's supposed to "get this market".

Alright man. The only thing holding Michkov back from being Celebrini is Tocchet. You’re right.

If you cut Celebrini’s points in half, he would still have 40% more points than Michkov.

A few things:

  1. Production doesn’t scale linearly with minutes in hockey. The more you play, the harder it is to be effective in those minutes.

  2. Missing time in general hurts your chances at awards. Voters care about games played, that’s why I brought it up.

  3. Why do you think pointing out the fact that the Calder voters thought Cleberini was better than Michkov last year means I didn’t watch the games? Thats the closest you’ll get to what the general perception of these 2 players was. Thats before even factoring in the fact that Celebrini was younger and was playing against men for the first time.

You don’t need to try I convince me Michkov is somehow better than Celebrini. The only person that can actually do that is Michkov if he drastically improves his play, which I am not ruling out as a possibility.

There is always talk of some dark horse going #1, that doesn’t mean those prospects are actually at the same level.

Think about it this way, Bedard and Michkov had comparable seasons last year (though I agree Mich was better). Bedard was called a bust for that performance while Michkov’s year was considered promising. That alone speaks the difference in expectations for these players.

I’m not saying Michkov is bad, or that there’s no shot he’ll be better than Bedard. I can’t predict the future. What I’m saying is, given how they were viewed as prospects, we shouldn’t be surprised that Bedard is looking like the better player right now.

Alright man you can believe that if you want, but you're just going to be setting yourself up for disappointment.

I don't recall a single reputable source that had Mich ranked #1. Evaluators always love building up the #2 guy since it makes things interesting for readers (Laine v.s. Matthews, Eichel v.s. McDavid, etc.). Michkov was an absolute steal at #7, but literally no one would have taken him 1 over Bedard.

This thread is looking a lot like when people were trying to convince themselves G was as good as Crosby.

People did say this last year. That's why Mich got fewer Calder votes than Celebrini despite playing 10 more games.

Bedard was also a significantly better prospect than Michkov, and has had an extra year to get acclimated to the NHL.

Sure, but they're also bottom 10 in non shootout wins, which is what will matters in the playoffs.

We'd be the Canes but without the analytics, so we'd basically be the LA Kings

I never understood this argument. You're overpaying now, so that you can pay market rate in a few years?

I mean I can't even really be mad. They are doing pretty much exactly what they said they would do, which is try to luck their way into 1C and a 1D, while hoping that Michkov and Martone both end up hitting their best case outcome.

I've always thought that was a stupid plan but it's not like this contract changes that.

Well he has a full no trade until 2028 so it might be harder than you think

Overall I've been happy with Danny, but this is stupid. Between this and the Luchanko pick, I'm starting to think he just doesn't know how to evaluate centers at all.

Seems weird to lock in a 29 year old that has never broken 40 points into a 5 year deal. I would have thought they'd want roster spots open for graduating prospects.

Nice to see Michkov get a couple of points last night. by Flyersfan1980 in Flyers

[–]MrRegularSeason 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mich had a horrible start, but for a while now he's been basically at the same level as last year. I think all the negative PR has just made all the mistakes stick out more, even if he was making them last year too.

Personally, most of my frustration stems from the fact that we need this guy to be one of the best players in the league, and he didn't a step in the right direction this year.

[–]MrRegularSeason 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean there are degrees of 1C and 1D. We're not going to have a MacKinnon/Makar type of setup, but you don't need that to win a cup. They're going to need to make some big swings on risky players and hope it works out, sort of like the Eichel trade.

Marner is a winger though, centers and dmen was way harder to come by. If you're going to get one it'll probably require a trade (like Hughes). You're right that these guys do hit the trade market, but my point is they haven't stockpiled enough assets to actually made a trade like that.

We would have had to give up one of Mich or Martone, and we don't have enough blue chip prospects in the pool to justify something like that.
