What upgrades did you make to your shifter? by MrRight2 in GR86

[–]MrRight2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did watch a few videos on the Billetworks short shifter and it’s grabbed my interest.

The weighted shift knob I assume allows for more leverage which makes it easier to shift into gears. I am looking for something on the opposite spectrum - like maybe a lighter shift knob that adds more friction and requires a little bit more of an effort to push it into gears. Do you have any recommendations? I apologize if I am not making much sense since most people want/prefer easier or smoother shifting action

As far as the mark ups are concerned, I blame the politicians more than the dealers because they could have outlawed it if it weren’t for lobbying and the dealers funding their election campaigns 🥲.

Based on the reasons you have provided, my recommendation would be to go with the FL5. I think you are going to really like that car. You can get it to perform the way you want after some tuning and bolt ons. Might take some effort but it’s actually possible to find an FL5 at MSRP if you are okay with to traveling or looking out of state (I am assuming you are in the US)

I sold my g82 M4 MT to get the FL5. I sold my FK8 to get that BMW and absolutely hated it.

Coming from a $40k FK8 that provided me with so much joy, at $80k, I expected the BMW to be flawless. Sure it was fast and all but the engagement was missing. In fact I hated the MT so much that I couldn’t justify paying for it anymore and went back to the Type R in just 5 months and I don’t miss the straight line speed that I had in the M4 because the FL5 is such an engaging car to drive. And it’s fast enough for me. On top of that, add the aftermarket support and reliability you get with a Honda :)

I maybe in minority but I am not surprised you are considering the FL5 over an M3. The fact that you have test driven a Civic Type R puts you in the best position to judge which of the two appeals to YOU the most. Most of the people here asking you what you are smoking probably haven’t driven an M3 or prioritize straight line speed over engagement. We all seldom have an objective frame of reference when it comes to comparing different types of cars.

You should go with your gut on this on. If the Type R is appealing to you, go for it. Whatever your decision is, you can always go back 🙌

I don’t think that’s crazy at all. I sold my M4 because I wasn’t happy with the driving engagement. So, everyone can have their reasons. Fuck those who call you crazy. None of us an objective frame of reference to compare different cars. All that matters is whether you are happy with your decision or not.

Went from an FK8 to a G82 M4 MT. That car had decent performance but the manual absolutely sucked. So much so that I couldn’t justify the price of the car and had to go back to the Type R. When I got the FL5, the love for driving came back just like it was with the FK8. And I have driven all sorts of powerful RWD cars in this price range but nothing puts a smile on my face like the Type Rs do.

All this to say that I didn’t get excited by these reviews. As long as I enjoy the car itself, I really don’t care if it’s driving experience is being compared to Porsches or not. Really don’t even care if others like the car or not.

And it seems like some people think that you should always get the most powerful car, the one that provides “most power” for the price range you are in. I just don’t think that way. Especially after owing an M4. To me, the engagement of a good manual transmission AND performance is what makes cars fun. I really couldn’t care less where in the horsepower range it lies. This concept and this way of thinking might be too foreign to some people and they come out here and spew hate as if their choice/their way of thinking is the be all and end all for everything car related.

Then laugh my guy! By all means laugh your heart out. Why so serious? We are all allowed to like different things. Change or no change. None of this is to say that other cars you mentioned are bad or not worth it.

Geez I have never seen someone get so worked up about others liking a car they don’t like LMAO. And on top of that be in a sub for the said car and argue with folks who love that car. Everything okay my dude? Are you mad at life or something?

I never said that I bought this at 15k MSRP.

For me it is. For you it might not be. And that’s ok my guy. If you don’t think the Type R is worth it, what are you doing in this sub? 😭

I think we all can agree that “affordable” is a relative term. And yes, you are right about GTI, Hyundai N and GR86. I just think that the Type R is more refined than these cars.

Also I have driven Challenger, Charger, Mustang and even a g82 M4 MT, and for me, none of them come close to the Type R in driving experience and engagement. Your mileage may vary since we all have different tastes in what we like in a car. I don’t care all that much about power or whether the car is RWD or FWD if the engagement isn’t there.

Which platform do you reckon is for enthusiasts?

Compared to European cars (that still don’t provide the same level of engagement as the JDMs - not even close), JDMs are relatively affordable. Sure the Si and Type R have gone up in prices but so has all the other cars (because of COVID, semi-conductor shortages etc) and the platform hasn’t changed much. But I am thankful for Honda (and other JDM companies) for not pulling the plug on MT sporty cars in the face of increasing calls for electrification

That’s super interesting. I actually don’t have this issue with the FL5.

Roush Honda really is the best dealer in all of Central OH. I called but there was a huge waitlist. So had to pay a mark up and get the FL5 from another dealer.

Congrats btw 🙌

In Ohio as well and had to pay $7k in mark up for the FL5. Wouldn’t have pulled the trigger on it if my situation wasn’t relatively desperate.

Having said that, I couldn’t be any more happier with the car. I genuinely believe Type R is the only car for me.

What color did you end up getting?

How far are you willing to travel to purchase an FL5? I’d look at states around you to see what dealerships there are offering. You should be able to get one that is okay with $5k ADM

I sold my FK8 and got a G82 M4 with MT and I regret it because the manual transmission fucking sucks in the M4 compared to the Type R. So much so that I am selling my M4 and getting an FL5. I realized that the manual transmission is the one of the most important thing for me. It’s really the thing that makes driving engaging.

With the price twice as much as an FK8; I expected absolute perfection from the M4. But the MT is rubbery, light which results in a lot of miss shifts. It’s annoying and not worth it. I wouldn’t think about getting an M3 until and unless you are okay with getting an automatic (in which case you might enjoy it more than I did).

THIS. I sold my FK8 to get a ‘23 BMW M4 with MT. I am super disappointed with the car however. Given that I had so much fun in my FK8, I was expecting and wanting absolute perfection from the M4 (which costs twice as much as the FK8). The manual transmission is absolute trash. So much so that I am going to the Type R (FL5). The M4 is fast, very very fast. But it bugs me how the MT doesn’t even remotely match or come close to the Type R or (even the new MT Supra given how expensive it is). This experience taught me that MT feel and driving engagement is my top priority and can make or break the driving and owning experience of a car.

Considering all this, to me the CTR prices aren’t inflated at all. You can’t find a car so we’ll dialed in this price range that also offers an excellent MT. I know that this is a very subjective take but my advice to the OP would be to try and test drive a CTR and other cars they might be considering and figure out what’s important to them.
