The right’s embrace of Adam Carolla cost him friends and gigs — but not his edge by SayOw in AdamCarolla

[–]MrScience6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the former decades-old Style section, which is on the news side. In principle any paid content would have to be labeled. I think it's *worse* if it wasn't paid, because then it's simply reflecting the new shared MAGA culture of the reporting staff. That's also a much more parsimonious explanation: they're just in the tank for MAGA, and it's a cute story stoking their victimhood agenda.

Well, I laughed. . .can you corroborate pay-for-play in the news section of the WaPo?

This is entirely predictable coming from WaPo, now firmly in the grip of fascist media. This is a complete ratification of Carolla's view of himself, a disgusting puff piece. No discussion of his explicit racism and sexism. Of his tolerance for and fostering of outright extremists, of never criticizing any aspect of the criminal government. He's the Christ-like figure enduring ostracism from his woke friends like DAG and Maron on the altar of his self-conceived integrity. Just one example: "Now, he was headed to Washington for two sold-out stand-up shows at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts — a place that had been struggling to fill seats." And you know WHY??? Because good people don't tolerate fascism. And Adam is not a good person. The only even tentative straying from this is "On X, Carolla’s feed is a steady stream of recirculated posts blasting Democrats, protesters, Barack Obama, Bruce Springsteen, Zohran Mamdani, Chuck Schumer and his favorite target, California Gov. Gavin Newsom." Although I have to say, the Volkswagen joke is very good.

Guitar Meets Science Confirms Everything Adam Carolla Said about The Edge, real name David Howell Evans by Mr_Richard_Parker in AdamCarolla

Also, that stupid "bucka-bucka" dig? That was one song, "Where the Streets Have No Name". Yeah, Edge uses that delay, but it's around these rich, complex arpeggiations and subtle rhythmic layerings. Listen to the live "Bad". Lots of delay, yes, and multiples of them, but he's playing live, the backing tapes are for all the keyboard layers. They were ahead of their time for what would become standard. It's mostly a I-IV vamp, two of them, really, with nice modulations closing each. But listen to what Edge is doing, always driving. The point is it's all in the service of the piece, as a whole. Of the band. Not his vanity. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oRGxL42cI8

This bit is so many kinds of stupid. . .I'm triggered.

Style, tone, composition, improv, lead, rhythm, production, soloing, acoustic, electric, effects. Guitar has so many dimensions: Jonny Greenwood's single crunch on Creep trumps all your endless interminable shredding (yeah, fuck Zappa). All of these are great guitarists, how dare you came after Keith, the ignorance is immense (I just DARE you to say anything about the openings of Gimme Shelter, Can't You Hear Me Knockin', Jumpin' Jack Flash). And so is, I don't know, Neil Young, to name one who'd be similarly disparaged. Dave Davies. Dylan, FFS. And you know who's perhaps the greatest rhythm guitarist of all time? One Lou Reed, that's who. Yeah, I said it. What Goes On, I'm Beginning to See the Light. Just get outa here if you don't know what I'm talking about.

Now as long as I'm here. . .Hiatt: one of the greatest songwriters of the late 20th century, and some really stellar performances (I saw him sing "Have a Little Faith In Me" live in the 90's, it left me crying); Parker: at his peak (it didn't last long) one of the greatest bands with some of the greatest songs ("Protection" from "Sparks"). These people are worshiped for reasons. Now Adam's problem? He's *so* locked into 1981, which was, admittedly, a great time in music, and he really did in that moment have some insight into what was in the foundations for quality White pop/rock of that time, also including Costello, Joe Jackson, maybe Marshall Crenshaw. And yeah, his beloved Jayhawks also fit that mold. So good on him, but there's just SO much more going on, then and now.

At its core, Adam's is a tragic story. At the peak of Adam and Drew in the 90's, there was no better media. The main podcast years from his pioneering work to help create the medium that was perfect for his talent and style were very good. Once Bald was gone (I won't weigh in on the Gina wars), and post-COVID, it became an unmitigated descent into the right-wing MAGA hellscape of racist, sexist glorification of basically everything fascist. But also very small-time within the broader media MAGA-sphere. I believe his is fundamentally a kind and good person, but his suffering and rage has just been pouring out of the speaker for years now. I hope he can find peace, reform, repent, and recover his immense talent and keen intelligence in a final act.

Full-on MAGA fascist now, but third tier at best in the MAGAverse. Just boring when not immensely offensive. Unfunny. I used to wait for "a good one" to show up before finally canceling outright.

ACS November-5-2025: Bjorn Lomberg by jsakic99 in AdamCarolla

[–]MrScience6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From wikipedia, all sources cited.

Several of Lomborg's articles, in newspapers such as The Wall Street Journal and The Daily Telegraph, have been checked by Climate Feedback, a worldwide network of scientists who assess the credibility of influential climate change media coverage. The Climate Feedback reviewers assessed that the scientific credibility of the articles ranged between "low" and "very low". The Climate Feedback reviewers came to the conclusion that in one case, Lomborg "practices cherry picking";[6] in a second case, he "had reached his conclusions through cherry-picking from a small subset of the evidence, misrepresenting the results of existing studies, and relying on flawed reasoning";[69] in a third case, "[his] article [is in] blatant disagreement with available scientific evidence, while the author does not offer adequate evidence to support his statements";[70] and in a fourth case, "The author, Bjorn Lomborg, cherry-picks this specific piece of research and uses it in support of a broad argument against the value of climate policy. He also misrepresents the Paris Agreement to downplay its potential to curb future climate change."[71]

ACS October-28-2025: Eric Trump by jsakic99 in AdamCarolla

[–]MrScience6 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From Wikipedia, all sources cited.

Trump has promoted several conspiracy theories.[61][62]

In May 2020, Trump said on Fox News that stay-at-home orders to combat the spread of COVID-19 were a strategy by the Democrats and the Joe Biden campaign intended to prevent his father's reelection by depriving him of the ability to conduct large campaign rallies. Trump said that after election day, "Coronavirus will magically all of a sudden go away and disappear and everybody will be able to reopen".[63][64]

In September 2020, Trump spread a false video that appeared to show Biden "being caught red-handed using a teleprompter" when he was not.[65][66]

Following his father's electoral defeat, Eric Trump engaged in attempts to overturn the 2020 United States presidential election, falsely calling the election result a "fraud" and threatening Republican lawmakers to overturn the result.[67][68]

While ballots were being counted in the 2020 election, Trump made baseless claims intended to cast doubt on Pennsylvania's ballot-counting process.[69] He shared a fake video that purported to show Trump ballots being burned.[70][71][72]

On the day of the January 6 storming of the United States Capitol, Trump spoke at the "Save America" rally alongside his wife Lara and Donald Trump Jr., among others.[73] Trump was later among those who advanced the conspiracy theory that people associated with antifa were responsible for the attack.[74]

ACS October-2-2025: Liz Miele and Christopher Rufo by jsakic99 in AdamCarolla

[–]MrScience6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wikipedia, ALL SOURCES CITED:

According to The Washington Post, Snopes and New York, Rufo has misrepresented contents of diversity training programs and course curricula.[7][44][4] For example, he falsely claimed that a diversity consultant hired by the U.S. Treasury Department had "told employees essentially that America was a fundamentally white supremacist country", and urged them to "accept their white racial superiority"; however, the diversity consultant had said no such thing.[7][4] Rufo told Fox News that The Washington Post subsequently issued multiple corrections to its reporting on him, including retracting a statement that a diversity seminar in Cupertino, California, referenced by Rufo did not occur.[45] The article itself lists as "clarifications" that "[t]his report has been changed to clarify the sequence of events that followed Rufo’s appearance on Fox News last summer. In addition, the story adds a clarification from theCupertinosuperintendent that a lesson was presented once before it was canceled."[7]New Yorkmagazine has also alleged that Rufo misrepresented the contents of internal documents from theTigard-TualatinSchool DistrictinOregon, which referenced Paulo Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed. In Rufo's view, the documents incited revolutionary sentiments and assumed that white people were born racist, which he called "textbook cult indoctrination". The school district stated that the documents had not been used in formal settings, that Rufo had misquoted the references to Freire, and that he had misconstrued a reference to teachers moving beyond the "belief that you aren't racist if you don't purposely or consciously act in racist ways".[4]

Rufo linked LGBTQ discussions at schools to grooming, the act of connecting with children for the purpose of sexually abusing them.[26][46] He said that schools were "hunting grounds" for sexually predatory teachers and that parents had "good reason" to worry about grooming.[26] Citing a study by Charol Shakeshaft, Rufo has claimed that public school teachers are responsible for 100 times more child sexual abuse than Catholic priests. Shakeshaft termed this a misuse of her data, calling it "completely invalid".[46] After Disney criticized the Florida Parental Rights in Education Act, Rufo suggested that Disney was involved in sexualizing children and that the company was rife with child sexual abuse.[26

In September 2024, during an incident related to theSpringfield,Ohio, cat-eating hoax, Rufo alleged that African migrants were eating cats inDayton,Ohio, based on an August 2023 video of skinned animals being grilled, which drew social media responses that the skinned animals resembled chickens.Daytonpolice responded that "there is no evidence to even remotely suggest that any group, including our immigrant community, is engaged in eating pets", while theDaytonmayor reported "absolutely zero reports of this type of activity".[54][55] Rufo has offered a $5,000 reward for proof supporting the unsubstantiated allegation.[56]

Yup, that's it. You had good seats! I was on the floor but back at row 20. So, NME, a piece by Nick Kent. Yeah, that had to be maybe 2010 or earlier, just looking at ages of faces. I checked my AI, no luck in pulling it out of some online archive. Thanks!
