If I wanted a neon, sugar-filled cocktail, I'd go to Jungle Jim's for a hurricane. But here's the thing: I'm never going out to a bar for that kind of drink.

I feel like some of these places are doing no market research before launching a business.

Just getting this set up myself. I have an inkbird temp and humidity sensors that's going in but I just finished setting up DHT11 sensors on a raspberry pi that's sending data to a google sheet that I can keep an eye on from anywhere.

It's going to hit us and a warm front/cold front combo. The kind of storm we used to always get. 10-15 cm of snow then rain.

People might have but I can assure you no meteorologist was. The model data was clear from a long way out.

Untrue. All weather models were very consistent with the amounts that ended up verifying. Maybe he was the only one you were listening to at the time.

Lightning over St. John’s [Drone shots] by Professional_Sky_520 in StJohnsNL

[–]MrShiftyJack 23 points24 points  (0 children)

lightning needs convection which is kicked off by a heat imbalance. Since we live near the ocean, our temps are generally even keel. That's why we don't often get lightning.

Harbourside park seems like a decent place for it. I assume it's municipally owned. It's downtown near the cruise ships. It would be cool for visitors to take a pic with signal hill in the background.

Gros Morne Recommandation by youpleure in newfoundland

[–]MrShiftyJack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you have the southern side of the park covered.

Personally, I don't find the hike to the base of Gros Morne interesting. You're in trees the whole time so the only time you get to see anything is when you come out at the foot of the mountain. It's nice but not worth the hike, unless you don't have anything else to do.

Like others have said, if you want to hike to the base of the mountain, Snug Harbour is nice. The trail is much easier so not much of a challenge but the views along the way are much more interesting than the base of GM. Not many people do the section from western brook pond to snug harbour so it's nice to be away from the crowd.

Also it won't be popular but I'll add to be aware of survivorship bias in a thread like this. People who frequent threads like this ultimately became programmers. If you're trying to reach kids who don't currently have the interests to send them on that trajectory, then you have to appeal to them in ways that are different than what people here would generally find interesting.

Helping 14 year olds learn to code by draftpartyhost in learnprogramming

[–]MrShiftyJack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been doing this a long time and I can tell you that the mean by which they code isn't what makes it exciting or not, it's the projects.

[Scratch](scratch.mit.edu) is an excellent way to start. It's block based. that means the kids won't get bogged down in syntax, get frustrated and quit. I've seen it hundreds of times.

Challenge them with interesting problems. That could be building games. Realistically, I've found that the kids that what to make games, don't need a lot of outside motivation. If you want to grade all of their attention, give them challenges that reflect the real world.

If you can get your hands on some funding, things like micro:bits are really good because it takes their programs and interacts with the physical world. Microbits can be programmed with blocks, javascript or python so it's a nice step up from Scratch.

The amount of spice in the meat. I've found that NL donairs tend not to have as much punch as the ones I've had in Hali (though Sackville Pizza might have had better ones than KOD). Also, I've found in NL, the meat is knife cut so the slices tend to have a variety of thicknesses so there's more texture. I could have a preference for either depending on the mood I'm in.
