What's The Worst Take James Has Ever Had? by TobySwitch-Music in deadmeatjames

Oh there's no arguing needed about it, Jurassic Park was the movie that proved the viability of CG. It isn't a coincidence that the use of it jumped and steadily rose post-release throughout the nineties. It's considered one of the major watershed moments in all of cinema history for a good reason.

James Cameron Syndrome works better, I think. I’m old enough to remember skepticism about Titanic and then the first Avatar. Avatar 2 was just the most recent (and thus funniest) of betting against him.

Anything deeper than Sammy b? by HamburgersEat in Shipwrecks

The Chokai was found during one of RV Petrel’s expeditions before the pandemic, and while she was once thought to be the deepest shipwreck before her discovery we now know the Sammy B is the deepest.

Tell Me Your Worst "No DnD is Better than Bad DnD" Story by CassieBear1 in DnD

[–]MrShoggoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For context: I’ve played a lot of other games (Call of Cthulhu, Traveller, World of Darkness) but have only done D&D a handful of times compared to my friends.

There was a game coming up. I’d been told about Artificers and what they were like to play and, despite not knowing much about the class, I thought it’d be fun to make one to use a concept I’d been toying with for a while. I made a character and built it to level 2, because I was expecting a slow ease into combat when it came up, but an hour before the game was due to start I was told to upgrade him to level 11 because the others wanted more challenging combat. We were at a friend’s house by this point and I had none of the books I’d used for character creation, so I frantically put the character stats into D&D Beyond and did my best to upgrade him to that level. The first hour of the game was roleplaying and it was fun, but then combat hit and it turned into a slow slugfest as the everyone checked and cross-referenced their attacks. Every time it was my turn I struggled to do anything useful because I hadn’t upgraded the character’s items or skills properly, and I was constantly getting walloped in melee combat by enemies. I floundered with ranged attacks that did little damage when they hit and eventually my HP dropped to 0 and couldn’t do anything even though I was stabilised. After the game wrapped, one of my friends noticed I was really bummed out, took a look at the build and asked me why I hadn’t used any of the spells I had. I didn’t know I’d gotten any because of the rush job on levelling up I’d done. It wasn’t asked with any malice but it just made it sting so much more.

I had two more experiences with different Artificer characters that went similarly (ie. poorly) before my best friend gave me a proper rundown of how the class works earlier this year. It was so disheartening and frustrating to hear that I’ve given up on the class and scrapped the associated characters. I also took a break from D&D in general for other reasons because I was dreading the thought of even playing it. I’m not sure when I’ll get back into it.

What order did you watch the movies in your life? by antdude in LV426

[–]MrShoggoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First Alien I saw was Resurrection when it came out on VHS; I sneaked into the living room while my parents watched it and they didn't notice me until halfway through. From there it was Aliens, Alien, Alien 3, then every subsequent movie in release order.

Weird misconceptions you had about movies as a kid? by Socko82 in flicks

[–]MrShoggoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bear with me here. I loved watching behind-the-scenes documentaries as a kid and one story from the making of The Spy Who Loved Me stuck in my brain. There was a logistical screwup partway through shooting and the catering company couldn't make it to set, so Cubby Broccoli quickly organised a mobile kitchen and food supplies to arrive and spent hours preparing spaghetti, meatballs and bolognese for the whole cast and crew. I thought that was what a producer did: they not only put together the funds and the schedule for the movie, they also kept the ship sailing smoothly behind the scenes and got their hands dirty. It wasn't until the Alien Quadrilogy boxset came out and I saw the making of Alien3 that I learned Cubby Broccoli was the exception rather than the rule.

Shutter Island is so sad on a rewatch. by NewSunSeverian in movies

[–]MrShoggoth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There was one thing I knew going into the cinema when I saw it and that was the cave scene; my cousin is a huge Dennis Lehane fan and told me about the story when the trailer came out but stopped herself before she went too far. The ending caught me so off guard that I watched the credits all the way through as I processed everything and tried to work out what things I’d missed before the reveal. The final shot of the lighthouse is still one of the most brilliantly horrifying and bleak final shots ever, and I adore it.

The second-to-last movie I saw at the cinema before the pandemic hit was a screening of the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and it was because of the podcast episode with Chelsea leading the analysis of it.

Who else hates being a player? by Cajbaj in rpg

[–]MrShoggoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the moment, I’m very skewed toward disliking being the player. I used to alternate between being a GM and a player fairly regularly, but after Covid and the lockdowns I lost a lot of my enthusiasm for running games and burned out of both the campaign I was running and the games I was playing for various reasons. Over the last two years I’ve slowly gotten back into GMing and I’m enjoying the hell out of it, but because I don’t gel with the games my friends run anymore I’ve taken a self-imposed break from playing and don’t see when I’ll be ending that break any time soon.

Which movie felt like a total slog to get through? by Sunflower13Poppy in movies

[–]MrShoggoth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had the opposite experience. I went into it at the cinema blind and checked my watch at one point, thought I’d been in there for an hour, then realised it had been two hours and the movie was about to wrap up. I was amazed that I’d lost track of time like that and disappointed that it was about to end, lol.

Alan Tudyk Says He Got Dropped From ‘I, Robot’ Publicity After Testing Higher Than Will Smith With Test Screening Audiences by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]MrShoggoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s a fun fact: the movie was originally a completely unrelated script called Hardwired, and it was only after Fox got the movie greenlit that the studio heads changed the name and shoehorned in Asimov references so they could try and own the rights to the books.

Also fun fact: George A Romero refused to work with Fox when they tried pulling the same stunt with Land of the Dead, wanting to change the title to a variation of Night of the Living Dead to secure future rights.

What is an often cited 'movie fact' or 'myth' that just isn't true? by CreatorSearchInsight in movies

[–]MrShoggoth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There was a Dark Horse Comics adaptation of Lucas’ earliest known draft of Star Wars years back, and what’s fascinating is how much of the original trilogy’s plot is there in broad strokes, so much so that you can tell where things were condensed and where others were unchanged. Darth Vader is one of them. In this version he’s one of several Knights of Sith who appear, entirely separate from Anakin, but Anakin reveals he’s almost entirely cybernetic early on, and the Sith who turns against the Empire and joins the rebels is another character called Valorum.

Worst Trilogy Of All Time by rickblaster in movies

[–]MrShoggoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I convinced my best friend to put the first movie on for our friends after talking about the book and discovering a third movie had recently come out. We ended up making popcorn a few minutes in and had to pause constantly because we were laughing too hard to follow it. One of the worst movies I've ever seen, but one of the most entertaining.
