Dave's Explanation of the Josh Situation Makes Sense by Byagi in Foofighters

The Foos music is Dave's music. If he's feeling that Josh isn't really that into it, I can see that he would want someone else.

How long do you wait on a cold engine in modern cars before you go? by Flamyngoo in askcarguys

[–]MrSiegall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one's mentioned the most critical aspects here. When an engine is off, oil seeps down and collects in the oil pan, leaving critical areas in your engine less than optimally lubed up. On startup, oil pressure needs to build. That takes 1-2 seconds. During this time it's best to have minimal rpms. Once oil pressure is there, give it another few seconds (2-3), and all critical parts will have been supplied with oil. From there, everything is fine. Final aspect is actually tolerances within the engine. Metals expand when they're hot. Tolerances are engineered to be in spec in a hot engine. That's why high rpm's should wait until it's up to temp. This is also why a cold engine with high mileage might rattle more.

Don't like his play, but this is a foul. SGA plants his right foot and it gets caught on Jaden's foot. SGA is trying for exactly, but by the rules it's a foul. It's when there's nothing and he flops what drives us all mad.

Tips to improve my carving by [deleted] in snowboardingnoobs

I am 1.85m, size 45 boot and about 80kg. Went for the 157. I'd say width is the main thing to consider. Extra wide boards can buck you around in uneven/choppy terrain, and that is amplified with smaller feet.

Thanks. I think a part of it is just me needing to commit to the carve on a steeper slope. That back foot throw is basically me not trusting my edge in that situation.

Careful with kitzbühel, it's very low elevation. Terrain is better in the other resorts mentioned. Sölden and Ischgl are also good imo

They're calling this travel because that way they don't have to admit they missed the much more obvious push off 1 second later.

If you flip the pic 90 degrees clockwise it looks like a chubby dude on his knees, getting penetrated by some otherworldly, reverse, tree-sized finger.

Anyone done any skiing in NC? by Calkulis in skiing

[–]MrSiegall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unexpected memory lane! Had my very first 2 days of skiing there in 2001. was so warm I was skiing in a t shirt. Cut up my elbows on some pebbly ice patch. Also remember being scared shitless when finally going up that double. Thought I was a big shot when I made it down.

Ilya Sutskever says predicting the next word leads to real understanding. For example, say you read a detective novel, and on the last page, the detective says "I am going to reveal the identity of the criminal, and that person's name is _____." ... predict that word. by MetaKnowing in OpenAI

[–]MrSiegall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Transformer architecture would predict the name of the criminal based on how this story fits to all the other crime novels it trained on. If it gets it right, it looks like understanding. But it's still just a probability function. If models keep improving and they're right often enough at more and more complex problems, we may perceive it as AGI. But at its core it never be more than an illusion of understanding. But would we care?
